STATE NURSES REGISTRATION COUNCIL

Introduction:-
The State Nurses and Midwives Council was established in 1948 under
the provisions of Nurses and Midwives Act with the purpose of “Better
training of nurses, midwives & health visitors”.It works as an
autonomous body under the Government of respective states,
Department of Health and Family Welfare.

STRUCTURE

Each state determines the specific administrative responsibility and


oversight of the council of nursing.

1. The governor of the state


2. The state health Directorate
3. Nursing Directorate
4. Another state official or organisation

The silent features

 Provision of an autonomous body, comprising majority of nurses,


endowed with decision making powers.
 Compulsory registration for all nurses, midwives practicing within the
state.
 Provision of nurses, midwives, & public health nurses to elect their own
representatives to the respective state.
 Powers to regulate nursing education prescribe curriculum & enunciate
examination policies.
 Provision to have a nurse registrar to carry out the functions of the SNC.
 Provision for recognition of educational institutions of nursing &
withdrawal of such recognition, if necessary.

Function of SNRC
 To inspect school of nursing in their state.
 To conduct examination for GNM & ANM courses.
 To prescribe rules of conduct, take disciplinary actions.
Registration of nurses & midwives & other.
 Maintenance of register of nurses, Midwives & other.
 To renew registration & upgrade registration. 

Council member:-

1. President (Director of state health service)


2. Vice president
3. Other member ( 4 Nursing superintendent , 2 RN,1RM.1Health
visitors) 

Procedure of registration:-

1. The institution where the student nurse has received education initiates
the registration process after successful completion of the recognised
educational course

2. The SNC issue diploma to the nurse.

3. After that the application for registration is filled through a form which
has to be duly filled along with the certified copy from the training
institute stating that she/he has complete the course successfully.

4. This form has to be send to the register with the required process fee & a
copy of diploma.

5. With the registration process ,the name of the nurse is entered in the state
register maintained in the council.

6. Registration certificate is issued to the nurse which bears the registration


number ensuring that her/his name has been register.
