III. RESEARCH PAPER
INTRODUCTION

We can live lacking of nourishment for maybe a month, but a few minutes without oxygen

can lead us to our graves. But what transpires when the air we need to sustain us is dirty and

polluted? Here in the Philippines, there are high levels of pollutants in our air. Department of

Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) records flaunt that the current rate of air quality in

the Philippines doesn’t come across its Clean Air Act standards. While the air pollution rate has

gone down by 20 percent, it still hasn’t met ideal levels. The prominent contributor to air pollution

is vehicle emission. Passenger vehicles are the chief pollution contributor, emitting crucial

amounts of nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxide, and hydrocarbons. As an outcome and being so

timely nowadays, climate change is a result of the mass effects of air pollution. It leads to rising

sea levels, warming oceans leading to coral bleaching, intense droughts and increased frequency

of flooding. (Union of Concerned Scientists, 2019)

We all consider rust as a waste material and supposed that it has no beneficial application

and utilization. Rust is an iron oxide, a usually red oxide formed by the redox reaction

of iron and oxygen in the presence of water or air moisture. Rust is another name for iron

oxide, which occurs when iron or an alloy that contains iron, like steel, is exposed to oxygen and

moisture for a long period of time. The best-known of these reactions involve oxygen, hence the

name "oxidation" (Chemistry Learner, 2019). But fortunately, rust alleged with no valuable use

can be a functional instrument to filter toxic gases that were discharged by cars.

Likewise, by the upsurge of the aforementioned pollution, bamboo charcoal as an air

purifier is vital. According to Engr. Belen B. Bisana, Chief of the Department of Science and

Technology-Forest Products Research and Development Institute Bio-Energy and Equipment

Development Section, 2017, bamboo is a good raw material for charcoal since it is a fast-growing
1
plant and can be re-harvested without any harmful impact on the environment and the part of the

bamboo used for charcoal is the stem base, which is typically discarded or left behind after. On

behalf of its marvels, bamboo charcoal is also known as ‘Black Diamond’ because its outcomes

are as precious as the stone it is named for, though you will be aware that it as a miracle worker.

Bamboo charcoal has a long and extensive history of usage in purifying the air we breathe. By

using the properties of activated carbon which has the ability to attract airborne gases, odors, and

particulate matter, combined with its porous nature which absorbs these problems, bamboo

charcoal has become natural purifiers or air filters and greatly improves and enriches the quality

of the air we breathe. (Leon, Jean Martin-de, 2019)

That’s why, the researchers are very eager to ponder a good way of minimizing the air

pollution as well as, creating a device that will purify the air. The device, RustCoal, filters toxic

gases such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide by its

fundamental entities, rust and charcoal. Both rust and charcoal are good exemplar of air sterilizer.

Hydrocarbon will be eliminated through the process of purification by rust and charcoal.

A hydrocarbon is an organic compound consisting exclusively

of hydrogen and carbon Hexane (C6H14) is also a extensively used non-polar, non-aromatic

solvent, accompanied by an essential fraction of common gasoline. With the gradual addition of

carbon units, the simple non-ring structured hydrocarbons have higher viscosities, lubricating

indices, boiling points, solidification temperatures, and deeper color. Burning hydrocarbons as

fuel, producing carbon dioxide and water, is a major contributor to anthropogenic global warming.

Hydrocarbons are pioneered into the environment through their extensive use as fuels and

chemicals as well as through leaks or accidental spills during exploration, production, refining, or

2
transport. Anthropogenic hydrocarbon contamination of soil is a critical worldwide issue due to

contaminant persistence and the negative weight on human health. (ScienceDirect Topics, 2019)

This study looks forward to create a device that will effectively filter toxic gases such as

hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide that are emitted by

vehicles using rust and charcoal as filters.

Through this analysis, the researchers will be able to furtherance and reinforce the Republic

Act No. 8749 that’s known as Clean Air Act of 1999. It can lessen the emission of toxic gases that

is one of the contributors of air pollution here in our country and heighten the expanse of clean air.

Also, it can amend to lengthen the continuous progress of climate change.

It can be an immense way to upsurge the production of bamboo charcoal and income of

charcoal burners since bamboo charcoal is needed in the process of filtration and purification.

Since poor air quality intensifies respiratory diseases like asthma and bronchitis, this study

will minimize the risk of acquiring the said ailments.

It will remove the misconception that rust is a waste material and prove that it has beneficial

applications. In this case, the amount of waste can be lessened. Also, we can uplift a good waste

management.

Additionally, it will impart greater baseline data for future studies in purifying toxic gases

using rust and charcoal. Thus, this study will furnish them broader and reliable source of data in

terms of the aforementioned methods.

This study entitled, “RustCoal: Synergy of Rust (Iron III Oxide) and Bamboo Charcoal in

Reducing the Toxicity of Vehicular Exhaust” is limited only in testing the capability of rust

(Fe2O3) and bamboo charcoal in decreasing the toxicity level of toxic gases emitted by different

cars.

3
The researchers utilized rust and bamboo charcoal as subject of the experimentation.

Materials and resources employed are available here in the province of Mindoro. This study is

conducted in Calapan City this June 19, 2019 – September 19, 2019.

Three kinds of vehicle namely; motorcycle, van and tricycle will undergo the emission test

and will use the device, RustCoal, to filter toxic gases. Also, it will be tested with varied fuels

explicitly; diesel and gasoline. The percentage of the smoke’s components given off by the cars

will be tabulated in terms of emission test in Calapan Emission Testing Center.

The RustCoal synergized by the Fe2O3 and charcoal is capable in reducing the toxicity of

the toxic gases such as hydrocarbons, carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide and nitrogen monoxide

from the smokes from the test vehicles.

MATERIALS AND METHOD

This section described the methods and steps in creating and testing a device that reduces

the toxicity of vehicular exhaust. It can be summarized into 5 steps namely: gathering of materials,

creation of device, emission test and data recording, data analysis and making of conclusions.

1. Gathering of Materials

The researchers created a device using the materials: a sheet of stainless steel and a 4"

stainless steel tube provided by the welding shop, approximately 2kg of Fe 2O3 gathered from

machine shops and workshops and 2kg of bamboo charcoal from San Teodoro, a grinder, pencil

grinder and a tick welder was also used.

2. Creation of Device

The device was created by: the stainless steel tube was cut to 8 inches in height to fit the

specified measurements. Then the cut stainless steel tube was covered by the stainless steel panels.

4
The tubes for exhaust were then installed by cutting holes from the covered tube. Once welded

into place, the device was cut into three parts with approximately 2.5 inches for each part. Each of

the three parts were then filled with charcoal, rust and charcoal respectively. The device was once

again welded into place, hence the creation of the device.

3.Emission Test and Data Recording

As for the actual test and data gathering, the technician first made a visual inspection of

the vehicle to see if it’s okay. They checked for the following: the presence of the PCV, good

condition of the exhaust system, and the presence of an air cleaner.

After passing the initial visual check of the vehicle, a technician placed an exhaust gas

sensor (connected to an exhaust gas analyzer) to your vehicle’s tail pipe. This equipment checks

your exhaust system, and reveals your Hydrocarbon (HC) (shows the amount of unburned fuel

emitted by the exhaust) and Carbon Monoxide (CO) (an odorless, colorless gas that can kill you)

levels via a computer print-out.

4. Data Analysis

The data is then analyzed using a comparative analysis comparing the results from using

and not using the device. The data is then tabulated which was acquired through the emission test.

5. Making of Conclusions

After the device has been thoroughly tested and observed, the outcome of the study was

then concluded.

DISCUSSION

Results showed the effectivity of the RustCoal in reducing the toxicity of toxic

gases emitted by the vehicles. In table 1, different toxic gases are present in vehicular exhaust

without the RustCoal filter and it showed large values in the toxic gas levels. On the other hand,

table 3 showed the same gases but the readings of results flaunt a decrease of value of toxic gases

when the RustCoal filter was utilized.

For the results on table 2, it put on view the average amount of toxic gases via

Foshan Analytical Instrument, a huge amount of toxic gases was detected during the emission

testing. Meanwhile, table 4 revealed the result of emission test on van vehicles equipped with the

RustCoal with less amount of toxic gases read by the F.A.I.

Comparing the results present in both tables, the results showed on tables 3 and 4

conveyed significant difference between the levels of toxic gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon

dioxide, hydrocarbons, and nitrogen monoxide which are present in vehicular exhaust was almost

half of the values present in tables 1 and 2.

Both tables have shown accurate and precise results on the emission test trials that

lead it to the shown average.

In the test for the van, the Foshan Analytical Instrument, which was used for

emission test of diesel-fueled vehicles, only showed the overall toxicity of the exhaust.

With the device, the effects of pollution will be lessened as well as the emitted

vehicular toxic gases and wastes.

For further improvement of this project we would like to maximize the use of rust

by adding another layer of it in our device to achieve an output of oxygen. Also, we will continue

to study about the reaction of rust to further improve our project and device. Likewise, the design

8
of the product will also be upgraded for commercial use. Lastly, we would also like to test the

efficiency of the device, RustCoal.

CONCLUSION

The study concluded that RustCoal is an effective device in reducing the toxicity of toxic

gases such as carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide, hydrocarbons and nitrogen monoxide present in

vehicular exhaust by utilizing the charcoal and rust present in the device. The researchers also

concluded that it reduced the toxic gases by 45.10084%. The device is effective when equipped to

public utility vehicles since such vehicles emit the largest levels of toxic gases.
