ABOUT THE
BIRD RACE
Having started in 2005 at Mumbai, the India Bird Races have
spread to many cities and regions of the country.

The main objective of the Bird Race is to popularize bird

watching at professional and amateur levels, as bird watching is
the window towards Nature Watch, which leads many to
conservation action.

Many people sign up as Volunteers for Bird Race. The idea

behind the day-long Bird Race is to search for birds from dawn
to dusk and record as many species as possible with their count
while enjoying being outdoors and watching nature too!

The Volunteers are divided into teams as per the number of

identified birding locations ensuring that atleast one expert is
available in the team for proper birdwatching, including
photographic documentation as much as possible.

For each location, a separate bird list is created, which will

include all species seen or heard, together with their counts. At
the end of the day, the teams gather together, finalise their lists,
discuss observations, experts reviews the list of each location,
check for errors and add any useful notes/comments and shares
the days experience over dinner.

Summary

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM
BIRD RACE 2021

WWF India has been organizing the Thiruvananthapuram Bird Race for the
past 15 years with the support of HSBC and Yuhina Eco Media, an NGO
based in Mumbai. Normally the event is announced in newspapers and social
media to ensure maximum number of participants.

But, now in view of the pandemic, the participation was limited to 50, and
announcements were made only among the circle of active birders and a few
colleges. This year, it was a joint venture by WWF India and YMCA,
Thiruvananthapuram. Though the Thiruvananthapuram Bird Race 2021 was
proposed to be held on Sunday, 14th November 2021, it had to be postponed
twice due to the intensive rains and was finally conducted on 19th December
2021 across 8 sites in and around the Capital City of Thiruvananthapuram.

“Forests in Kerala are
rather better protected,
either as Protected Areas
or as Reserve Forests, and
hence its biodiversity also.
However, it is not the same
in the case of biodiversity
outside forests, mainly
because the varied
habitats lie in pockets
across the State including
the coastal area, inland
water bodies, mangroves,
sacred groves, etc. It is
great to see volunteers of
all age groups coming from
different disciplines
engaging in documenting
biodiversity outside of
these forests. These kinds
of volunteering activities
towards citizen science
initiatives are significant
for the long-term
protection of such
biodiversity-rich habitats

The Thiruvananthapuram Bird
Race, part of the Volunteer
Engagement Program of
WWF-India, is now in its 15th
year and it has been made
possible only by the
volunteering efforts of many.
Through this annual Bird Race,
we have been visiting the
birding hotspots in
Thiruvananthapuram and
observing birds along with
noting the changes in the
habitat. We have been able to
document it and the results
are shared with the wider
community through media
coverage. Another significant
achievement of the Bird Race
over the past many years is
that we have been able to
bring many youngsters into
nature conservation through
bird watching and we now
have a dedicated cadre of Bird
Experts in the Capital City.

Mr. Renjan Mathew Varghese

State Director (Kerala)
WWF India

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM BIRD RACE 2021 • ACTIVITY REPORT PAGE 11

In his presidential address, Dr. Koshy M. George, President, YMCA,
Thiruvananthapuram Chapter appreciated the efforts taken by WWF in
organizing such an impactful event and expressed his happiness in bringing
YMCA in as a partner. Recounting his days as a Senior Mission Scientist at
ISRO, he emphasized the need for analyzing the 15 years of Bird Race data
available with WWF India and suggested that we come out with specific
recommendations and management interventions to protect these bird
habitats.

Mr. A. K. Sivakumar, Senior Education Officer, WWF India and Coordinator

of the Thiruvananthapuram Bird Race reviewed and compiled all the
checklists. He then spoke about the general observations across the 8 sites, and
listed out the number of species and significant sightings of the day.

Mr. Reji Kunnumpuram, Chairman, Public Relations, YMCA felicitated the

function. Ms. Anushreedha Sivanandan, Project Officer, WWF India, Kerala
State Office delivered the vote of thanks and Ms. Umalekshmi R, a WWF India
Volunteer was the Emcee for the event.

Following this, the Birding Teams came forward and shared their experiences
and concerns. They spoke about the notable species that were observed and
also the ones that were missing. Some of them pointed out the concerns about
degradation of the bird habitats over the years.

SITE-WISE
REPORT
1.Kallar - Ponmudi Forests
Kallar-Ponmudi forests was comparatively less disturbed due to the closure of
tourism. The bird activity here was high and a good number of many endemic
species like Malabar Parakeet, Malabar Wood Shrike, Malabar Trogon were
spotted. But an interesting observation was that not a single Malabar Grey
Hornbill, an endemic bird, which is fairly common here (Kallar to Ponmudi),
was observed. Though there were many Flycatchers, the number of Asian
brown and Brown breasted Flycatchers spotted were significantly fewer. Seven
species of “birds of prey” or Raptors were observed from Ponmudi, which
included the migratory Booted Eagle. Three Western Ghats endemic birds and
ten migratory species were reported from this site.

2. Bonaccord Forests
Bonaccord offered a great experience to the birders. It used to be a tea estate
earlier and when it was abandoned and left alone with no major interference
by humans, Nature has reclaimed the area giving rise to a pristine forest with
diverse bird life. The sighting of a Western Yellow Wagtail which is a
migratory bird is the first report from this location, and hence an important
sighting. Three species are endemic to Western Ghats and five migratory
species were reported from this site.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM BIRD RACE 2021 • ACTIVITY REPORT PAGE 13

3. Kottoor Forests
Kottoor area is known for the frequent human-elephant conflicts and as a
result entry to this area is restricted by the Kerala Forest Department, starting
from the Forest Checkpost towards Chonampara Tribal Settlement. Since the
participants were given prior warning about the presence of wild elephants,
they decided against walking along the road which has a river running parallel
to it. This turned out to be a wise decision, as they were greeted by a herd of
around 6-7 elephants alongside the river, as soon as they passed the checkpost.
The riverine forest yielded a pensive looking Brown Fish Owl and the usual
forest birds like the Minivets, Drongos, Bulbuls etc. They noted a raptor just
ten meters from the road, but the view was of the backside. They waited for a
long time to get a glimpse of the underbelly so that they can make sure of the
species. The waiting was worth it and with the full view it was confirmed as a
Legge’s Hawk Eagle. The forest checkpost keeps tight vigil on the movement
of vehicles and because of that, the road was clean and devoid of dumping of
waste. Overall, the area is well monitored and managed by the Forest
Department. Here, five species reported are endemic to Western Ghats and
eight migratory species were reported.

4. Punchakkari Wetlands
The team which had visited Punchakkari wetlands, otherwise known as the
birding hotspot of the Capital City, expressed grave concern over the habitat
loss and degradation due to drastic land use changes and the recent heavy
rains. It was observed that people have started intruding into the marshes,
mostly for photoshoots; and this activity disturbs and scares away the birds.
Possible action from the concerned authorities is the need of the hour.
Invasive species like water hyacinth have almost taken over barren fields and
parts of the lake; there were some initiatives from the Panchayath and local
groups. Conservation groups should back them for systematic long-term
management. The upcoming tourism development plan must consider the
bird habitats like paddy fields, lake and the trees around, as this is the largest
wetland ecosystem which functions as a bird habitat of the Capital City which
offers shelter for many of the migratory species. No species endemic to
Western Ghats were reported from here, but fifteen migratory species were
observed.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM BIRD RACE 2021 • ACTIVITY REPORT PAGE 14

5. Thiruvananthapuram City (Zoo & Museum compound, Kesavadasapuram
paddy fields, and Kannnamoola Thodu)
Though the Museum & Zoo Compound is located in the heart of the City, it
was found to be home to many migratory as well as other unexpected rare
birds too. The team listed out commonly seen urban birds along with a special
sighting, the Orange-breasted Green Pigeon. This bird has been regularly
reported from this location for the past many Bird Races. They also saw two
Brown-breasted Flycatchers. There was a heronry of Oriental Darters with
nests and newly hatched chicks. The Black-crowned Night Herons were also
spotted. At Kesavadasapuram paddy field, there were a large number of Cattle
Egrets, Wood Sandpipers and also heard the calls of Yellow-billed Babblers in
the nearby canopy which is unusual for an urban area.

At the Kannamoola Thodu, they could see a large number of Pond Herons,
Barn Swallows and could also hear Blyth's Reed Warbler and Clamorous Reed
Warbler. The team noticed that the Kannanmoola Thodu was heavily polluted
by the unchecked dumping of domestic waste. Many large-sized Sucker fishes,
which is an ornamental fish normally found in aquariums, were also sighted
here. It raises concern as they are considered as invasives and also the harm it
does to birds that prey on them. No species endemic to the Western Ghats
were observed here, but nine migratory species were reported from the 3
locations.

6. Palode Forests - forest area adjacent to Chittar South Forest Station

The forest area near the Chittar South Forest Station falls under the
Kulathuppuzha Range and Thiruvananthapuram Forest Division and is a
haven for forest birds. The monoculture plantations of Acacia and Mangium
have affected this area adversely and this leads to scarcity of water and
increasing human-animal conflict. The freshwater Myristica Swamps of this
location is significant and Oduchuttapadukka, where a Biomedical Waste
Treatment Plant was proposed by Indian Medical Association, are both located
within this site. The team sighted the Chestnut-winged Cuckoo on the way to
this place. They sighted six Black Baza birds also near this location. The team
recorded 80 species in which seven species are endemic to the Western Ghats
and ten are migratory species.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM BIRD RACE 2021 • ACTIVITY REPORT PAGE 15

7. Akkulam – Veli Wetland Complex
The diversity of birds in Akkulam Lake has decreased considerably over the
past few years and this year it is the lowest ever. This decrease in the habitat
usage by birds in Akkulam can be largely accounted for the unscientific
tourism constructions and related heavy activities, together with the
unchecked dumping of municipal waste here from nearby locations. The lake
is stinking and covered with floating plastics. The number of migratory birds
observed in the lake was very less. The Whiskered Tern that always marked its
presence in the lake was also absent this time. The sight of a few Spot-billed
Ducks may be the last hope for this dying lake.

The number of waders from “Veli” beach were also quite low; this maybe
because of the prolonged rainy season which can be attributed to climate
change. As the season changes, there is chance that a greater number of
migratory birds might be seen here.

The campus of the National Center for Earth Science Studies (NCESS),
Akkulam which lies contiguous to the Akkulam lake, is a promising site for
birds. The small lake within the campus is a well-protected abode for
hundreds of Lesser Whistling ducks. The campus also harbors other amazing
bird diversity. A total of 36 species of birds were observed from the campus
which includes a pair of Forest Wagtail, Indian Paradise-Flycatcher, flock of
Chestnut tailed Starlings, and three species of Orioles of which two are
migratory. Thirteen migratory species were reported from this site, but there
were no endemics.

8.Arippa Forests
The forest adjoining the State Forest Training Institute at Arippa is a very
interesting birding site for the birders of Thiruvananthapuram. The different
forest types shelter many species of birds. The disposal of waste in the forest
was noted as a matter of serious concern and the team suggested controlling
the same by educating the residents of the locality. A total of 40 species were
reported from this location of which five are endemic to Western Ghats and
five are migratory species
