CHAPTER 1:
INTRODUCTION TO BIM
WHAT DOES “BUILDING INFORMATION MODELING”
(BIM FOR SHORT) MEAN?
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is a comprehensive, integrated approach
to envisioning, designing, constructing and operating a building digitally.
The BIM methodology makes it possible to involve all project participants in a
construction project in the entire process of the building with the help of 3D
data models. This approach allows for extremely efficient implementation.
Construction planning with BIM intervenes early in the process and is
therefore more proactive than traditional methods of construction planning.

TRUST IN ABB’S BIM DATA
Building Information Modeling (BIM) is an object-oriented approach to building
design. Using content authoring software, e.g. Autodesk Revit (R) software,
the BIM process creates a 3D digital model of a building, enabling realistic
engineering analysis well before the construction begins. This analysis requires
BIM files with the correct data. This will not only enable the calculations to be
correct but should mean the data is accurate for the product or solutions that
will be in the actual structure. Hence, it is important that your design team is
using a high-quality object with high-quality data. Data structure embedded
parameters and data should be named and organized correctly. In addition,
third parties‘ parameters/data are sometimes not related to the product but
come from third parties such as BIM developers.
If your design teams want to know the data regarding ABB’s products or the
geometry of the products for space requirements to avoid clashes, we have
both available for you. When you use ABB’s BIM files, you not only get the
high-quality objects for your models but also our products and solutions are
compliant with internaional standards such as ISO 19650.
How does this occur? When you download an object, you get the data
packaged with the object and easily accessible through Revit or other
authoring tools. The same applies to the construction teams doing the
actual procurement – the people that wish to procure our products. They
will find it easy to get the information about our products and the specific
data, for instance, characteristics such as fire rating or U value, AKA thermal
transmittance. They can easily match ABB’s products to the specifications and
requirements they must comply with to get the design passed. Contact us, we
will find a suitable solution for your needs. In the following course of this eBook
we will look at the different BIM areas.

CHAPTER 2:
INTRODUCTION TO MEP
A building‘s mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems (MEPs) are
important parts of the building‘s services. These systems are typically
designed by experts. Because MEPs affect a building‘s efficient operation,
many different objectives and criteria must be met for their design,
installation, commissioning, operation and maintenance.
The mechanical part of MEP includes systems, which relate to heating,
ventilation, and air conditioning systems, but they may also relate to
transportation systems such as lifts and escalators, industrial plants and
machinery, etc.
The electrical aspect of MEP (which is our main focus) involves electrical
systems that include power supply and distribution, information and
telecommunication systems, control systems, security systems, detection and
alarm systems, interior lighting and exterior lighting.
The plumbing aspect of MEP design involves any system that allows for the
flow and movement of fluids, including pipes, valves, tanks, fixtures and other
apparatus. These systems may include heating and cooling, waste disposal,
water reclamation and treatment systems, fuel gas piping, etc.
As a domain expert in the electrical aspect of MEP, ABB, in the comming
chapters of this book, attempts to decipher the electrical aspect of MEP
using BIM. A key aspect of this book is a closer look at the challenges the
construction industry faces and how ABB solves them using quintessential
methods and solutions derived from years of proper research, application and
expertise.

CHAPTER 3:
ELECTRICAL DESIGN
INTEGRATION WITH BIM
Electrical engineers traditionally use a combination of electrical applications
for electrical systems design (ESD) and then create 2D CAD drawings. For
example, in a lighting design for a room, luminaires for each area are selected
according to lux requirements, and the results are depicted in 2D CAD drawings.
To conduct ESD design and analysis, it is necessary to collect room dimensions,
door and window details, furniture details and material data from architectural
drawings. However, as we create a design from multiple platforms, there is a
possibility that errors will be made. As such, this is a tedious process for an
electrical engineer because of the need to collect required details from civil and
architectural drawings. A similar problem of duplicated work arises if data are
collected from a catalog and drafted using a 2D CAD software program.
Building electrical systems are a group of electrical components interconnected
to carry out a specific operation. By integrating BIM into electrical designs,
estimation and coordination and manipulations can be carried out before
the actual construction starts and adequate solutions can be identified and
resolved by analyzing the BIM virtual model.
ABB provides seamless integration of electrical designs with BIM using state-of-
the-art tools and technology such as product objects, configurators, plug-ins,
product selectors. While there are challenges with electrical design integration,
ABB’s solutions (as discussed in chapter 4) are quite comprehensive for
electrical designs and follow the latest standards in order to get the best BIM
designs.

TOOLS AND TECHNOLOGY USED

significant difference is in the way the object appears after it is represented in a building component from regular CAD and focuses on modeling 3D
the drawing.

BIM can utilize a wide range of software and technologies.

• CAD

• Object CAD

• Parametric building modeling

There are multiple options to choose from when engaging in BIM. For CAD geometry in a drawing. Having the ability to extract data on individual objects

modeling technology is by far the most effective way of using BIM. For on CAD technology, it is easily implemented without much change, and
example in parametric building modeling, Information is linked via algorithms the results are immediate. However, object CAD again relies heavily on the
in a digital parametric structured model so that when a change is made, consistency and reliability of the user. For example, Importing a standard part
components are updated automatically in line with specified parameters. will not update the Bill of Materials (BOM) unless the user also selects the
associated part reference of the standard part.
Although CAD is one of the easiest technologies to use in industry today, it
is not usually used as part of a BIM process. When used in conjunction with Parametric building modeling is the most effective method of implementing
BIM, CAD becomes even more challenging to use. In order to achieve the level BIM. The basic difference between this technology compared to CAD and
of efficiency that BIM demands, CAD files must be layered and standards object CAD is the real-time self-coordination of the information in every view.

10 CONTENT OVERVIEW BIM Global Site

Self-coordination is a unique capability that parametric building modeling
utilizes, and CAD and object CAD do not. It ensures that when a change is
made in the design, it will be implemented throughout the entire project. This
gives an assurance of the quality of information coming from the design.
At this point, it is worth noting that ABB is positioned to create a paradigm
shift with the design aspect of the industry. The main focus is to create a
system where electrical design embedded with BIM functionalities becomes
as easy as it can be. The ABB approach makes all the difference.
Beside the design tools, to enable collaboration among the 500+ stakeholders
that may take part to a BIM project, Common Data Environment is paramount.
Such cloud services enable users access, operate and collaborate in real time
on the BIM model, performing complex tasks such as bills of materials, clash
detection, project reviews at a glance and with very limited cost.

ABB’S APPROACH TO DELIVERING BIM SOLUTIONS
A rapidly developing technology like BIM is crying out for standardization –
which, however, is not yet available in all areas. There is currently a great deal
of competition among the various providers of platforms for BIM files, which
makes the whole process even more complex. However, ABB’s goal is to make
as many BIM solutions as possible available to all customers within the ABB
program.
ABB has so far opted for a mixed approach, offering most of the BIM solutions
for off-the-shelf solutions on its own BIM website, where they are accessible
by category or product line. At the same time, ABB works with external third-
party platforms such as BIM Object, MEPcontent, to contribute to an open
ecosystem, bringing to life the essentials of a standardized BIM system for
electrical designs.
ABB’s BIM solutions are available in both proprietary and open formats,
reflecting the different needs of engineers on the subject. In the area of
configurations, we have already developed tools that enable designers to
create customized objects of our product solutions. The next tool being
developed is the BIMagic Designer to configure other products as well.
BIM is also useful in improving the libraries concerned with the properties of
materials that are used in electrical design processes. For instance, although
these libraries can provide electrical-related properties, some special projects
require even more information and research about the life cycle assessment
of a building. BIM can be used as a bridging approach between simulation
tools and CAD tools and can contribute further measurements for life cycle
assessment that might be unavailable in libraries of both CAD tools and
energy simulation tools.

THE PLACE OF TRAINING FOR BIM IN ELECTRICAL DESIGNS
With BIM we can eliminate the need to use paper while designing electrical
circuits. We can save time and resources because we can create a model of a
complex energized system and then use it to develop and troubleshoot the
electrical designs from the issues of cabling, feeders, and distribution boards.
We can also make changes in the actual design using the actual energized
system rather than just a simple diagram and layout plan. Moreover, we can
track our designs and analyze the generated bills of materials (BOMs) which
is a major benefit for accountants and project managers. Overall, using BIM
for electrical designs will help us deliver high-quality electrical systems more
efficiently.
One of the most important aspects of successful BIM implementation is the
training and education of your team. Implementing BIM in your electrical
design process requires a change in the way everyone on your team thinks and
works.
Your electrical designers need to be able to think in 3D, understand how to
create and use intelligent models, and be able to navigate and collaborate in
a virtual environment. The training you provide should not only teach them
these new skills but also help them see the value of using BIM throughout the
design process.
If you want to quickly build confidence in your electrical designs, then you need
access to the latest information and tools. With ABB’s program, you can access
our free library of BIM courses and tutorials designed for electrical designers
in residential, commercial and institutional projects. These programs draw on
the latest research and knowledge of ABB experts to build confidence in your
electrical design and help you avoid mistakes that can slow down your project
and create extra costs. For example, in the BIM overview by ABB course you will
learn: 1) the aim of BIM and its impact on the construction environment 2) how
to capture BIM benefits for each project stakeholder all along the building life
cycle 3) how to support your customers finding and using ABB’s BIM content.

CHAPTER 4:
CHALLENGES AND
ABB SOLUTIONS
While BIM is still on the verge of total acceptance and adoption within the
building and construction industry, there are still some challenges that electrical
engineers face from time to time as regards the design process and the
implementation of BIM for their electrical systems.
In this chapter, we highlight the various challenges that are head-on against
the implementation of BIM in the electrical design process. ABB is doing a lot
to close the gap that divides BIM and electrical design. Although a lot has been
done and more is certainly to come, these challenges and how ABB is solving
them are worth noting.

PROBLEM:
RE-USE AND ADOPTION POLICIES
Developing comprehensive and clear guidelines for the re-use and adoption
of BIM models by the same team for different purposes or by others is a
challenging task. The integrated concept of BIM blurs responsibilities between
different members of the project team. The accuracy of the data behind the
BIM model carries significant risk, and responsibility for that accuracy must be
protected by some form of disclaimers as well as limited warranties on the part
of the designers.

14 CONTENT OVERVIEW BIM Global Site

ABB’S SOLUTION
BIM managers and senior operatives should be tasked with tracking and
controlling errors and deciding responsibilities. The BIM manager would need
to perform several activities, including agreement by the parties on model
access, software, security, information, archiving, transmission, etc.

To avoid disputes over BIM responsibilities, limitations and liabilities, a new

form of contract could be introduced. This would cover all parties directly
involved or any other party that might be affected by the BIM working method.

In a typical coordination process, the BIM coordinator receives the 2D and

3D digital information, project requirements, and design specifications (e.g.
minimum ceiling height, required clearance for access, and maintenance
equipment) to initiate the coordination process. Once conflicts are identified,
the BIM coordinator reviews the identified conflicts based on his or her own
knowledge of design coordination and identifies true physical conflicts as well
as process and model-based design issues.

In the second step, project stakeholders meet to review and discuss the
identified coordination issues and develop solutions. Once the models are
prepared and the problems are identified, the project team discusses the
issues raised in the problem identification phase. Participants interact with ABB’S APPROACH

companies. ABB runs estimates from initial research to give the company the

and a contingency for unforeseen circumstances.

PROBLEM:
A COLLABORATIVE WAY OF WORKING
Companies within the industry are reluctant to share information with one
another. This is due to the risk of other companies potentially stealing ideas
or clients. This has resulted in a very close-to-the-chest approach in the AEC
industry, with an abundance of issues in information exchange between
project consultants. This lack of communication has had a detrimental effect
on projects and can be costlier for all parties, often leading to uncoordinated
design.

ABB’S SOLUTION
ABB‘s BIM solutions, such as clash detection and model integration, highlight
coordination issues early on and create an open information platform between
project stakeholders, identifying problems up-front and thus reducing them.

THE EDGE OF A NEW ERA OF
SAFE, SMART AND
SUSTAINABLE BUILDINGS

Building Information Modeling is beginning to be heard more and more within

the construction industry. There are few people within the industry who have
not at least heard of BIM. There is an agreement by most that BIM is the
direction in which the building industry is growing at a particular rate, but how
long will it take to get there? Many building owners and investors, architects and
planners, facility managers, BIM managers, contractors, distributors and end
users have already begun to count on ABB because of the numerous benefits
ABB offers them.
After carefully examining the pros and cons of the technology of today, it is
not as advanced as it needs to be for most MEP firms throughout the nation
to convert from their current design tools. It is far too difficult for designers to
effectively and efficiently produce the same quality of work that they are able to
do now with CAD and MEP Autodesk.
Anyone looking to venture into a productive line of electrical design should
know that BIM is essential in today‘s advanced world. Therefore, ABB helps
in achieving the desired BIM goals for your electrical designs within building
construction.
