Question 1

Figure 1 is a mild steel pipe used to transport superheated liquid at 400°C. The steel
pipe has an internal diameter of 60mm and a wall thickness of 38mm. The pipe is lagged
with felt 50mm thick and set in a cylindrical concrete jacket of thickness 13mm and
length 70m. The ambient temperature outside the concrete jacket is 30°C.

Given:
 The heat transfer coefficient for the inner surface, hin = 170W/m2.°C
 The heat transfer coefficient for outer surfaces, hout = 29W/m2.°C
 Thermal conductivity of mild steel, ks = 54W/m.°C
 Thermal conductivity of felt, kf = 0.05W/m.°C
 Thermal conductivity of concrete, kc = 1.4W/m.°C.
