STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

I am interested to apply in the Taiwan Foreign English Teacher Program (TFETP) as an

English Teacher. My friend and colleague awaken my interest after sharing the news of this rare
opportunity. My desire to widen my horizon through gaining new knowledge, learning new
strategies and sharing my expertise to others specially to foreign learners is one of my goals in life.

I finished Bachelor of Arts in English at Mindanao State University in 2009 and pursued Certificate
in Teaching Program at Capitol University in 2012. After passing the Licensure Examination for
Teachers held on September 29, 2013, I applied at Department of Education -Misamis Oriental
Division. Fortunately, I was accepted by the department and became a permanent employee on
June 2014. I was assigned at Laguindingan National High School from that date up to the present.
For eight years, I have gained knowledge and learned different techniques on how to deal students
with diverse personality which was not taught during my college days. Teaching by the book does
not guarantee an effective teaching performance nor an assurance that students find the lesson
important at all. It is through capturing student’s attention, understanding student’s individuality,
modifying teaching strategies and applying different activities based on student’s interest which
make learning fun, productive and significant to them.

Learning on how to read the English language is not just the main goal of an English teacher like
me but making the students comprehend the language. It is widely known that Philippines
considers English as a second language however, not all secondary level students comprehend
well. It is my goal to help students understand what they read in a simplest way possible. As a
Reading Coordinator of the school, it is my task to endorse and initiate a Reading Intervention
Plan. Integrating differentiated reading activities to diverse students need a thorough monitoring.
It is not sufficient to simply hand the activity without evaluating the activity’s appropriateness to
the student. My experience as an English teacher, as a Reading Coordinator and Tutor develops
my skills. I learn to apply different teaching approaches such as interactive classroom activities,
group and individual performance task. More than that, giving extra attention to student’s
background, and considering their learning styles are also taken into account by a teacher like me.

I consider myself lacking in terms of leadership that is why I took up Master of Arts in Educational
Administration at Phinma, Cagayan de Oro College and I was able to finish the degree last May
2021. It taught me how to connect with my colleagues and I also learned how to deal with them.
Moreover, it trained me how to create a plan for my professional growth however, carrying out the
plan is the most challenging one. With this, I learn to strategize and manage to gain the trust of my
colleagues. The wisdom that I attain from my acquisition with my colleagues and students gives
me confidence that I fit for the position.

Teaching in public school makes me happy. However, I want to go beyond my limit. Though, it is
quite risky considering that I am already secure in my current job, I still want to venture teaching
in other country. It is my dream to teach in a foreign country wherein I would learn, and understand
its culture. I also believe that I will grow more professionally if I will be exposed to different
educational system. Moreover, I want to pursue higher education, enroll in any teaching related
courses, learn more strategic teaching and learning approaches and at the same time share my skills
to my future colleagues and students.

If this application will be granted, I want to become part of the institution for at least five years. If
ever I will find out later that this career path is very convenient for my interest, I will consider
staying for a longer period of time. I want to create my own name and be a dependable teacher and
colleague. I want to be of great help to the institution and contribute something for its betterment.
Furthermore, I want to understand the culture through being part in the community. Exploring the
different tourist spots of Taiwan is also part of the list which I wish to accomplish.

Teaching can be considered a trial-and-error process. Thus, there is no best learning and teaching
strategies and approaches. It all varies on the background and learning styles of the students.
Likewise, there is no such word as “the best teacher” for it differs to the liking of the students. It
may be true to one or two students but might not be the choice of the others. As a teacher, it is my
ambition to acquire more knowledge, be updated to trends, learn new teaching strategies and apply
it in my teaching so that I can consider myself an effective teacher to my learners. One way to
evaluate myself if I am effective is through asking feedback from my students. In this manner, I
would be able to recognize the strength of my teaching abilities. In order to provide quality
education, a teacher must not stop learning. High quality performance could only be achieved if
the students are genuinely guided and understand its purpose.

I teach not only the content of the lesson but most of the time I tried to integrate the lesson to
students’ daily life. To make it more realistic and easier to digest, I share popular individual’s
experience or even my life’s experience applicable to the lesson being discussed. As I observed,
students find English subject boring. With such idea, bringing the students to reality and making
them get involve into the scene will make them find the lesson interesting specially in dealing with
literature lesson. Also, the students learn to develop their higher order thinking skills and share
their views and stand on the lesson being discussed.

Teaching gives satisfaction. More than anything else, it is very fulfilling to hear from my students
in the future that I made an impact into their lives. At this stage of my career, I have seen different
colors of students. From this experience, I want to go beyond and explore. I want to spend my life
learning, teaching, helping and inspiring others specially my students.
