BRIEF INTRODUCTION
In the previous lessons, you learned that notes are musical symbols for
sounds. These musical symbols, when arranged and combined properly,
create beautiful music. The notes and rests are grouped accordingly by means
of the time signature. The time signature signifies the meter of a particular
song.
Conducting

2. 4.
17
BRIEF INTRODUCTION
Our ancestors enjoyed playing different games before the computers and play
stations came to be. Those games were part of our history and culture.
Traditional games or Indigenous games (known as “Laro ng Lahi”) were played
informally with minimal equipment and can be played without reference or
written rules due to limited resources. Games stimulate children’s growth and
development, physically as well as intellectually. It promotes a healthy
lifestyle.
“Laro ng Lahi”
Look at the pictures below. Can you name the local games shown in the
pictures?
Have you played them all?
Which of these games do you enjoy the most?
18
There are five types of games namely:
Types of Games
Target Games – are activities in which players send an object towards the
target while avoiding obstacles. An unopposed game, the contender only aims
to hit the target to score while in an opposed game, the player uses offensive
or defensive strategies to a goal. These games can be played indoor or outdoor.
2. Sipa – A player will hit a washer (sipa) several times, using his/her foot,
knee, or elbow. The player must count the number of times he/she hits or
kick the washer and must not allow it to touch the ground. If the washer
touches the ground, chances for other players to play sipa. The player with
the most number of hits/kicks, wins.
3. Luksong Baka - One player “it” “Baka” (cow) crouches while the other
players jump over him/her. As the game progresses, the “it” “Baka” (cow)
slowly raises his/her body making it difficult for the other players to jump
over him/her. The player who touches the “Baka” (cow), becomes the “it”.
4. Piko – Is the Pinoy version of hopscotch. They throw the pamato. Which is
Usually the stone or small ball in one of the boxes drawn out in chalk.
Whoever successfully throws and retrieves the stone wins the game.
19
B. Team Target Games
1. Batuhang Bola “Dodge Ball” – It is a game played by two teams, one team
served as “it” they throw the ball try to eliminate the members of the opposing
team by hitting them with a ball, catching a ball thrown by a member of the
opposing team, or forcing them to move outside the court boundaries. If most
of their members are hit.
2. Tumbang Preso – All you need to play tumbang preso is a slipper and a
tin can. The person who is “it” (Taya) guards the tin can, and each player
takes turns trying to hit the can. Once a player hits the can, they must retrieve
the slipper and the “it: will place the tin can back in position. If the player
does not hit the can, he/she will become the next “it”
3. Luksong Tinik – “jumping over thorns” Two players line up their feet and
hands to make a tower while a third player tries to jump over. If the
player/jumper touches the “thorns”, he/she will be the “it” who will join the
other player who will serve as “thorns” while the second player will be the
jumper.
4. Syato or Tiato – Two or more players need two flat sticks (one big and one
small). The game starts when the first player hits the stuck-out small wood in
the hole and hits it in the air. The hitter gets a point if he/she makes a run
in the playing area. If the opponent catches the small stick, he/she is the next
hitter.

27
Health Appraisal Defined
Health appraisal provides important information on the pupil’s current health
status. It also gives teachers an idea if their pupil is fit enough to participate
in school activities. It also gives teachers the opportunity to modify these
activities and make them appropriate for the pupils. With health appraisal,
the school administration could provide the following:
1. Access to appropriate medical supervision.
2. Development of a positive health experience.
3. Opportunity for counselling regarding health problem.
2. Dental Examinations. Can you speak or chew well? Do you feel any
pain while speaking or chewing? Do you have infection due to cavities
and other dental problems? Dentists do dental examinations to check
if you are fit to attend school. If you have undergone dental
examinations before the start of the school year, you will just ask your
dentist to give you a letter or certificate for confirmation. Your dentist
may also fill up the portion for dental health form an assessment
which you will submit to your school medical doctor.
3. Hearing Test. Hearing can also affect your performance in your day-
to-day activities. It is a part of your health appraisal. After the check-
up, your doctor will advise you and your parents if you need to consult
an audiologist, a speech language hearing clinic or community health
agency.
28
5. Scoliosis Test. Scoliosis commonly develops during the growth spurt
and adolescents like you through scoliosis test, you will be able to
know the condition of your spine. Early detection prevents it from
getting worst.
7. Vision Screening. Being not able to see well can affect your school
performance and your safety. This screening detects tiny visual
difficulty like hyperopia or myopia. The doctor who does the screening
will inform your parents or if they already know it the doctor will update
your condition
Remember, if the doctor, nurse or dentist find a cause for concern, they will
use the information gathered in health tests to prescribe the right
medication or the appropriate medical intervention. That is why we have
our yearly check-ups. It is for your own benefit. By doing this yearly, it
becomes a healthy habit
ACTIVITIES
Activity 1.1 What is your BMI?
Your school health personnel measure your height and weight
whenever you visit the clinic for a check-up. There are also tests for hearing,
teeth and vision by our medical professionals. The school gathers this
information for our students.
Let’s try to get your BMI. The Body-Mass-Index measures your body
fat based on height and weight that applies to adult men and women. Your
BMI will tell us if you are underweight, normal, overweight or obese. BMI does
tells us how healthy you are. To get your BMI, you divide your weight (in
kilograms) by the square of your height (in meters). BMI = kg/ m2
When you get the BMI, look at the BMI categories below to see your
status.
BMI Categories:
Underweight = <18.5
Normal weight = 18.5–24.9
Overweight = 25–29.9
Obesity = BMI of 30 or greater
29
For this activity, get the BMI of at least 5members of your family.
Name Relationship Height Weight BMI Status
30

the ones who are doing the health appraisal procedures.
5. Your height and weight are checked to see if you may have problems
with your health such as poor nutrition, disease, etc.
6. Because most students are visual learners, visual screening is
important. Having poor vision might challenge your safety at home, in
school and even your academic performance. It might also detect
some visual problems such as myopia or hyperopia.
7. Dental checkups are needed also. They look into reasons why you
might be unable to chew because of pain, swelling or infection due to
cavities and other dental problems. This might also be the reason why
you might have difficulty in talking in school.
31
8. A hearing test is also included because it might affect your school
performance. You might be referred to a specialist after the hearing
test if the problem needs to be looked into by an expert.
9. As you enter puberty, growth spurt occurs. A scoliosis test tells the
condition of your spine. This prevents it from progressing.
10. Breast examination is important for girls. Testicular examination
for boys. Changes in the reproductive system happen in this age.
