File Management
A great way to start our project is to manage media files on our computers. When our files are
on the computer, we place them in one (1) folder and group them by creating subfolders.

Compatibility
As we manage our files, we also have to check their compatibility with Windows Live Movie
Maker. The table below shows the video file types and file name extension.

Video and Photo Import

Importing our media files can be done in different and easy ways.
1. Using Import from device
We can transfer our files from our devices into our computers by connecting them
together.
2. Using Add Group
The Add group contains commands used for adding elements to our project such as
videos and photos, background music, and text.
3. Using Drag and Drop
The easiest way for us to place our videos in the timeline is to drag and drop them.

When using the import from device, our files are stored automatically to the Photo Gallery.

Lesson 4 Editing Video Clips

When we create a video, we carefully construct its sequence to clearly communicate the content
to our viewers. After placing the raw videos in the timeline, the next step is to edit them. We edit by
stabilizing, splitting, trimming, and deleting some of the portions. Let us take a look at how to edit our
videos.

Thumbnail Size Changing

As we edit, it is helpful to use the Change Thumbnail Size to see the overall timeline of the project
and Zoom Time Scale to expand the video to specifically select the portion to edit.

Video Stabilization

Videos taken using handled devices are often shaky. To smoothen the rough footage, we can use
the Video Stabilization command.

We select the video, choose Video stabilization from the Edit tab of the Video Tools, then choose
from any of the options.

Clip Splitting

Sometimes we want to insert a photo or another video in the middle of our current video. This can
be done by splitting the video.

When we split a video, we start by placing the play head marker on the area that we want to split.
The next step can be either of the two (2):

1. Right-click the marker, then choose split.

2. Select Split from the Video Tools Edit tab.

Clip Trimming

As we edit, we may want to hide a portion of our video. In this case, we use the Trim tool.

When we trim a video, we place the play head marker at the start point or end point, then right-
click, and choose Set start point or Set end point.

We can specify the start and end points by doing any of the two (2): enter the values on the Ribbon
or use the bar from the Preview window and adjust the start point and end point.

After this, select Save trim to save the changes, and close the Ribbon.

Audio Level Adjustment

Since we are creating a new video, we would like to remove the background audio of the clip. We
can use the commands from the Audio group. The Video volume is used to increase or put into mute
the volume of the selected video. If we want to add effects, we can adjust the speed in Fade in and
Fade out.

We can delete parts of a video by splitting it first, then right-clicking and choosing Remove or
pressing the Delete key.
