Q. Rakesh had money to buy 8 mobile handsets of a specific company.
But the retailer offered very good discount on that particular handset.
Rakesh could buy 10 mobile handsets with the amount he had. What was
the discount the retailer offered?
a) 15%
b) 20%
c) 25%
d) 30%

Discount % = (1 - 8/10) × 100
Discount % = 20%

Trains
Speed = Distance/Time
If two trains are moving in the same direction, then the relative speed is the
difference of speeds of both trains
Relative Speed of Trains moving in same direction = (u-v) m/s
Q. 1. In what time will a train 100 meter long cross an electric pole, if its
speed be 144 km/hour?
Time = Distance/Speed

Q. A train running at the speed of 72 km/h goes past a pole in 15 s. What is
the length of the train?
a) 150m
b) 200m
c) 300m
d) 350m
Speed = 72 km/h = 72*5/18 = 20 m/s
Speed = Distance/time
Distance = Speed * time
= 20 * 15 = 300m
Q. 150 m long train running with the speed of 90 km/h to cross a bridge in
26s. What is the length of the bridge?
a) 500m
b) 550m
c) 600m
d) 650m
Distance = length of train+ length of platform = 150 + x
Speed = 90km/hr = 90*5/18 = 25 m/s

Q.2. A man is standing on a railway bridge which is 180 m long. He finds
that a train crosses the bridge in 20 seconds but himself in 8 seconds. Find
the length of the train and its speed?

Q.4. A train 110 metres long is running with a speed of 60 km/hr. In what
time it pass a man who is running at 6 kmph in the direction opposite to
that in which the train is going?
a) 5 sec
b) 6 sec
c) 7 sec
d) 10 sec
Relative Speed = 60+6 = 66 kmph
Time = Distance/Speed

Q. 5. Two trains 200m and 150m long are running on parallel rails at the rate
of 40kmph and 45kmph respectively. In how much time will they cross each
other, if they are running in the same direction?
a) 72 sec
b) 132 sec
c) 192 sec
d) 252 sec
5
Relative Speed = v-u = 45-40= 5 kmph = 5 * (18) = 25/18 m/sec
25 18
Time= Distance/Speed = 350 / (18) = 350 * (25) = 252 sec
Q.6. Two goods train each 500 m long, are running in opposite direction on
parallel tracks. Their speeds are 45 km/hr and 30 km/hr respectively. Find
the time taken by the slower train to pass the driver of the faster one
a) 12 sec
b) 24 sec
c) 48 sec
d) 60 sec
Relative speed = (45 + 30) km/hr
=(75×5/18)m/sec
=(125/6)m/sec.
We have to find the time taken by the slower train to pass the Driver of the
faster train and not the complete train.
So, distance covered = Length of the slower train.
Therefore, Distance covered = 500 m.

Musicians who can play 3 instruments = 10% = 20
Musicians who can play 2 instruments = (x+y+z) = 70
Musicians who can play guitar = 80
a+b = ?
a) 2.5 kmph
b) 4.2 kmph
c) 5 kmph
d) 10.5 kmph
Downstream speed = a =13
Upstream speed= b =8
ALTERNATIVELY
Downstream speed = speed of boat + stream = v+u=13
Upstream speed = speed of boat- stream = v-u=8
a) 9 kmph
b) 10 kmph
c) 11 kmph
d) 12 kmph
Let speed of stream = x
So downstream speed = 18+x
And upstream speed = 18-x
It takes thrice the speed as long as to row up as to row down
So
3(18-x) =(18+x)
54-18 =4x
x =36/4
x=9 km/h
So speed of stream is 9 km/h.
Q.3. If a boat goes 7 km upstream in 42 minutes and the speed of the
stream is 3 kmph, then the speed of boat in still water is:
a) 4.2 kmph
b) 9 kmph
c) 13 kmph
d) 21 kmph
As the boat goes 7 km upstream in 42 minutes,
Rate upstream =7/42×60=10kmph
Speed of stream =3 kmph
Let speed of boat in still water be x km/hr.
As we know that,
speed upstream = speed of boat in still water - speed of stream
∴ speed upstream =(x−3)kmph
⇒(x−3)=10
⇒x=10+3=13kmph
Hence, speed of boat in still water is 13 kmph
Q.4 A boat can travel with a speed of 13 km/hr in still water. If the speed of
the stream is 4 km/hr, find the time taken by the boat to go 68 km
downstream.
a) 2 hours
b) 3 hours
c) 4 hours
d) 5 hours
Speed downstream = (13 + 4) km/hr = 17 km/hr.
a) 12
b) 13
c) 15
d) None
Let the speed of the boat in still water be x kmph. Speed downstream =
(x+3) kmph
Speed upstream = (x-3) kmph
Therefore,
As distance is same:
And Distance = Speed* Time
1(x+3)=1.5(x−3)
x+3=1.5x−4.5
x=15 kmph
Q.6. A man can row at 5 kmph in still water. If the velocity of current is 1
kmph and it takes him 1 hour to row to a place and come back, how far is
the place?
a) 2.4km
b) 2.5km
c) 3km
d) 3.6km
Speed downstream =(5+1)kmph=6kmph
Speed upstream =(5−1)kmph=4kmph
Let the required distance be x km.
Then,
Distance/Speed = Time
x/6 + x/4=1
2x+3x=12
5x=12
x=2.4km
