Instructions: Answer the following questions on the space provided below each
number.

1. What is ASEAN?

Answer:The Association of Southeast Asian Nations, or ASEAN, was established on 8


August 1967 in Bangkok, Thailand, with the signing of the ASEAN Declaration (Bangkok
Declaration) by the Founding Fathers of ASEAN: Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines,
Singapore and Thailand.

2. Enumerate the member states of ASEAN including their year of membership.

Answer:Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand. Brunei Darussala.

3. What is ASEAN Charter?

Answer: The ASEAN Charter is a constituent instrument of the Association of Southeast


Asian Nations. It was adopted at the 13th ASEAN Summit in November 2007. The intention to
draft the Charter had been formally proposed at the 11th ASEAN Summit held in December
2005 in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
4. What is ASEAN Summit?

Answer: The ASEAN Summit is a biannual meeting held by the members of the Association
of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in relation to economic, political, security, and socio-
cultural development of Southeast Asian countries. In addition, it serves as a prominent regional
(Asia) and international (worldwide) conference, with world leaders attending its related summits
and meetings to discuss various problems and global issues, strengthening co-operation, and
making decisions.The summit has been praised by world leaders for its success and ability to
produce results on a global level.
5. Enumerate the fundamental principles of ASEAN.

Answer: Mutual respect for the independence, sovereignty, equality, territorial integrity, and
national identity of all nations;
The right of every State to lead its national existence free from external interference, subversion
or coercion;
Non-interference in the internal affairs of one another;
Settlement of differences or disputes by peaceful manner;
Renunciation of the threat or use of force; and
Effective cooperation among themselves.
6. What is the function of ASEAN Secretariat?

Answer: The ASEAN Secretariat's basic function is to provide for greater efficiency in the
coordination of ASEAN organs and for more effective implementation of ASEAN projects
and activities.

7. Enumerate the three pillars of ASEAN Community.

Answer: ASEAN Political- Security Community (APSC), the ASEAN Economic Community
(AEC) and the ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community (ASCC).

8. Describe the appointment and term of Secretary General of ASEAN.

Answer: The Secretary-General of ASEAN shall be appointed by the ASEAN Summit for a non-
renewable term of office of five years, selected from among nationals of the ASEAN Member
States based on alphabetical rotation, with due consideration to integrity, capability and
professional experience, and gender equality.
