Prior to the arrival of the Spaniards, Nipa huts were the native homes of
the Philippines' indigenous people. They were made to withstand the
Philippines' weather and surroundings. These constructions were
composed of plant materials such as bamboo and were only meant to
last a short time.

SOCIOFACTS
One of the oldest types of dwelling in the Philippines is the
Nipa hut (Bahay Kubo). Roof thatching is created from
bamboo, coconut wood, cogon grass, nipa palm leaves, and
coconut fronds.

Bahay kubo was and continues to be generally

organic in material and elevated, primarily for
vernacular and superstitious reasons, as well as
because floods during the wet season and the
scorching dry land during the summer can
cause a lot of problems for the residents.
Similar environments in the Philippines'
lowlands have resulted in traits that are
"typical" of Bahay Kubo instances.
