PROCEDURES FOR CARTOON DRAWING CONSTRUCTION (Head)

Background Information:
Head designs of cartoon character has basic shapes. To be more creative, study
faces and observe at what makes people different from each other. To construct the
head, be aware of its shape, features and the use of spacing in realistic proportions
of the head.

Learning Competency: TLE_ICTAN9-12CI-IIIa-j-2

LO 2. Produce clean- up drawings for actual- scene folders (cartoon, simple)

1. Learn the procedures in cartoon drawing construction.
2. Understand the importance of using basic shapes in drawing a cartoon head
character.
3. Draw a simple cartoon head character by following the procedures properly.

Realistic Head vs Cartoon Head

There are three (3) terms used in cartoon drawing construction:
a. Center guidelines – guidelines used to draw the elements for your character’s
head.
b. Design language – using shapes and lines choices for your cartoon
c. Construction – the act or result of constructing, interpreting, or explaining.

Realistic Face Drawing Construction

1. Draw a circle as skull of your character and divide it into horizontal and
vertical lines which is called center guidelines.
2. Measure the height of the circle, then measure half of the height from the
bottom and make a mark. Draw the jaw by connecting the sides of the circles
to the mark.

3. Draw the eyes about halfway from the center to each edge on the horizontal
centerline. The nose is at the bottom of the circle and the mouth goes
between the nose and chin.

This time let us change the spacing away from realistic proportion. Check how it
changes its feature spacing results in different cartoon character types.
Cartoon Face Construction
1. Draw head measurements similar to the realistic head.

2. Draw the mouth where the nose was on the realistic drawing, the nose in
between the mouth and the eyes.
3. Draw another head and place the nose lower than the standard location. The
character then has a flat nose and little chin.

Activity 1:
Draw a cartoon head character using basic shapes by following the procedures
in cartoon drawing construction properly in your sketch pad.
