I. Purpose:
2.1 To avoid infection to set in on all surgical procedures performed.
2.2 To eliminate patient’s exposure to exogenous microorganisms.
2.3 To keep all operating theaters clean and sanitary at all times to be ready for the next
IV. Definitions:
1.1 Sterilization – the complete removal or destruction of all forms of microbial life including
bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. Sterilization is achieved by steam, dry, heat, ethylene
oxide gas, and liquid chemo sterilizers.
1.2 Disinfection – a process that eliminates a defined scope of pathogenic microorganisms but
not necessarily all microbial forms.
1.2.1 High Level Disinfection – eliminates all pathogenic organisms but some viable spores
may persist on an item disinfected to a high level.
1.2.2 Intermediate Level Disinfection – eliminates all pathogenic vegetative bacteria, fungi,
and most viruses but some viruses (particularly small viruses without envelopes) and
bacterial spores are not eliminated.
1.2.3 Low Level Disinfection – eliminates most pathogenic bacteria but some of the less
surgical procedure.
II. Policy
3.1 All equipment and instruments used should be sterilized every after operation.
3.2 All operating theaters should be sanitized every after the procedure.
3.3 Disinfection and sterilization procedures should be done in the CSSD.
3.4 Sterilization of instruments should be according to the type of instruments.
III. Responsibilities:
4.1 Operating Room personnel should ensure that all operating theaters are cleaned and
sanitized every after the operation.
4.2 Operating Room staff should send all instruments for disinfection and sterilization to the
CSSD.
4.3 Operating Room staff should endorse properly instruments used in infected cases.

V. Procedure:
5.1 Scrub nurse
5.1.1 Places all used instruments in the sterile receiver.
5.1.2 Endorses instruments to the CSSD Decontamination Area for disinfection and
sterilization.
5.1.3 Labels instruments used in infected cases and gives special endorsement to the
CSSD personnel for proper handling.
