Rev. April, 2019
1.0 INTRODUCTION
This document provides instructions for the installation, use, maintenance and refurbishment of the Fike EleQuench™.

2.0 GENERAL INFORMATION

2.1 Description
A Fike EleQuench™ is used in combination with a Fike EleGuard™ explosion venting device to protect industrial Bucket
Elevators that process combustible dusty products from the devastating effects of potential dust explosions. The addition of
a Fike EleQuench™ on top of a Fike EleGuard™ will assure conventional explosion venting can be done indoors and in manned
areas with no release of flame and minimal external pressure, temperature and ejected dust particle amounts.

Contact your local Fike office for the determination of the proper installation location and dimensioning of Elequench™
devices on bucket elevator legs, elevator head section and elevator boot section to assure effective explosion protection is
achieved.

2.2 Customer Service

The information contained in this document is provided for reference purposes only. For further product information or
ordering refurbishment parts, please contact your local Fike office.

Additional information is available at www.fike.com.

3.0 INSTALLATION
 To allow for proper venting, do not install any equipment or walls, within the safety distance defined in Section 2.6, cf.
2X the longest side of the device around from the EleQuench™.
 EleQuench™ can be installed 90° from vertical or horizontal.
 Keep in mind the orientation of the vent panel as the EleQuench™ may interfere with walls and other process
equipment when it gets installed onto the vent panel and the position holes lined up. For the correct orientation of the
vent panel, refer to the position of the slots in the EleQuench™. These slots are intended for the nameplate and the
rupture indicator on the vent. See Figure 5.
 Verify whether the EleGuard™ explosion venting device has a rupture indicator.

3.1 EleQuench™ Installation Procedure

CAUTION: Before installing the vent panel and EleQuench™, carefully check the surface temperature of the elevator.
Make sure it is not too hot to handle.
Refer to Figure 4 for assembly diagram.

Step 1: Use provided lift ring(s) when installing EleQuench™. The rings are located on the side weldments. Do not attempt
to lift device by any other method.
Step 2: Carefully clean gaskets, explosion vent, and elevator wall.
Step 3: Align holes of explosion vent with elevator wall.
Step 4: Install explosion vent between gaskets and onto elevator wall (refer to Installation Instructions provided with
explosion vent) with vent identification tag lettering facing up.
WARNING: Take EXTREME CAUTION not to damage Explosion Vent when installing device. Damage to the Explosion
Vent will cause it to malfunction.
WARNING: Do not damage flame filter as any damage to the filter may cause the EleQuench™ to malfunction, which
may result in a dust explosion in the surrounding area.
Step 5: Carefully place EleQuench™ on top of explosion vent. Ensure bolting holes are lined up. It is imperative that extra
care is taken to align the explosion vent hinge as seen in Figures 3 and 4.
WARNING: Installation with the explosion vent installed with the hinge in any other orientation will cause the vent
panel to block the filter during an event. The blockage of the filter (by the vent panel) will cause an increase
in pressure within the elevator being protected. See Figure 6.

Step 6: Fasten the EleQuench™ to the elevator wall, refer to the nameplate on the panel for recommended torque values.

3.2 EleQuench™ Removal Procedure

CAUTION: Before removing EleQuench™, carefully check the surface temperature. Make sure it is not too hot to
handle. Do not disassemble the EleQuench™ while mounted to an elevator.
Step 1: Ensure the process has been shut down.
Step 2: Attach straps to lifting rings to support device during removal process.
Step 3: Remove the nuts, bolts and washers holding EleQuench™ to elevator and lower to ground. Be careful not to let
the vent fall on the ground when removing the nuts, bolts and washers.

4.0 REFURBISHMENT INSTRUCTIONS

Only persons who have read this manual shall perform routine testing and maintenance on the EleQuench™.

Refurbishment is mandatorily required after a dust explosion has occurred. This includes replacing the explosion vent, filters,
gaskets and nuts, bolts and washers. Not refurbishing after a dust explosion occurred, may lead to improper functioning the
next time a dust explosion occurs.

4.1 Filter Removal

CAUTION: To prevent possible injury (cuts and scrapes), wear leather gloves when handling the filters.

Step 1: Make note of lifting ring locations before beginning refurbishment process. Locations must be maintained at re-
assembly.

4.2 Filter Replacement
4.2.1 REMOVE FILTER
Step 1: Remove nuts and washers from filter (see Figure 8).

4.2.2 INSTALLATION OF NEW FLAME FILTER

Step 1: Place a new Fiberfrax®-gasket on the filter.

Fiberfrax®-gasket

FIGURE 9 – FLAME FILTER

Step 2: Carefully place the filter with the Fiberfrax®-gasket on the casing.

FIGURE 10 – CASING

Step 3: Apply copper grease to the bolt threads and tighten them at 10 Nm using a torque wrench. Begin with the middle
top bolt and continue from there to the outside, alternating between left and right side. Install lift rings in their
original locations.
Step 4: Refurbishment complete. Inspect casing for any damage caused during refurbishment. The EleQuench™ is now
ready for installation.

5.0 SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE

Only persons who have read this manual shall perform routine testing and maintenance on the EleQuench™.

Additional maintenance may be required depending on process and environmental conditions.

5.1 EVERY THREE (3) MONTHS

 Shut down the process prior to scheduled maintenance.
 All system components should be visually inspected.
 Keep filter free of dust. Use vacuum to remove dust from filter. Do not use air pressure to clean filter.
 Check for loose nuts, bolts and washers.
 Check for damaged vent from the inside of the process.
 Check for damaged flame filter.
 If the explosion vent has failed, not as the result of a deflagration, the EleQuench™ needs to be carefully inspected
and if necessary removed from the process. If the dust penetration is deep into the filter, the filter may need to be
refurbished.

6.0 DECOMMISSIONING PROCEDURE AND DISPOSAL

INSTRUCTIONS
Remove EleQuench™ following instructions in Section 3.2. Keep steel out of the waste stream by diverting material from
disposal.

7.0 REPAIR AND RETURN AUTHORIZATION

Any component that is to be returned to Fike must be approved for return prior to shipment. In order for the returned
component to receive the correct attention (credit, repair, replacement) either under warranty or at the owner's expense,
a Shipping Label for prearranged return authorization must be provided by Fike. A prearranged return authorization will
expedite the business and corrective action measures taken upon receipt of the part(s).

When preparing the component for shipment, please put the Shipping Label that is provided by Fike on the package with the
goods to be returned. Also include a specific statement of the perceived defect or component failure so Fike can examine
the returned part(s). This statement should address symptoms and an operation history of the system in which the
component was installed. If the part(s) have been in contact with any medium, provide a (Material) Safety Data Sheet –
(M)SDS with the shipment.

In the event the suspect part is found within a larger top assembly component, the party providing the Shipping Label
should be able to assist you as to whether the entire assembly must be returned or only the component in question.

Any part returned without authorization or correct labelling, will not be handled and will be scrapped without any
notification.

To start the repair and return authorization procedure, contact the nearest Fike Sales Outlet. The nearest Fike Sales Outlet
may be found on the Internet at www.fike.com or by referring to Section 2.2.
