The student completed Project 1 on the causes of fire and preventive measures. They answered questions about combustion, the conditions needed for combustion, different classes of fire and how fires can be extinguished. They created a poster to raise awareness of fire causes and prevention for the school community. In completing the project, the student encountered some problems but also fostered scientific attitudes and noble values. They designed a scrapbook to document their work and presented their poster to the class.

Project 1: The cause of fire and preventive measures
Aim: Prepare a poster to create awareness among the school community about the causes of fires and fire prevention measures.
PART A (Knowledge: 20%)
Answer all the questions. 1. Define combustion. Combustion, also known as burning, is the basic chemical process of releasing energy from a fuel and air mixture. ____(1M) 2. What are the conditions needed for combustion? The conditions needed for combustion are combustible or flammable substance, ignition temperature and a gas that is a supporter of combustion (oxygen). ____________________(1M) 3. The substance used in a fire extinguisher differs based on the types of materials on fire. Discuss. These can be divided into six categories of fire involving different substances: Class A, combustible carbon-based solids e.g., paper, wood or textiles, Class B, flammable liquids e.g., paraffin, petrol, diesel or oil (but not cooking oil), Class C, flammable gases, e.g., butane, propane or methane, Class D, burning metals, e.g., aluminum, lithium or magnesium, Fires caused by electrical equipment (indicated by an electric spark symbol and not the letter E), Class F, fats and cooking oil. ________________________________________________________________(6M) 4. Fire can be extinguished by removing one of the conditions needed for combustion using different techniques. Explain and give example. All fires can be extinguished by cooling, smothering, starving or by interrupting the combustion process to extinguish the fire. Some of the most common methods of extinguishing a fire is by cooling with water, suffocate it by ensuring that it cannot have access to oxygen and to remove the fuel or oxygen source. ____________________________________________________(6M) 5. How does the fire blanket works? It cuts off the supply of oxygen smothering completely or reducing the size of the fire. __(2M) 6. Give four ways to prevent fire. Avoid unattended or careless use of candles, keep BBQ grills at least 10 feet from the house, do not disable smoke or CO detectors and do not smoke indoors. ________________________(4M)
