Introduction
Corrosion is a continuous process of destruction of metal due
to environmental factors with time.
the destructive effects of this process are:

1)Metal losses its properties and efficiency.

2)To maintain the metal its cost increases and rate of

production decreases.

3)Purity of metal gets affected.

Comparison Between Dry And Wet Corrosion

DRY CORROSION WET CORROSION

It occurs in dry condition. It occurs in wet condition.

Corrosion products accumulate at the Corrosion take place at anode but products
place where corrosion occurs. accumulate near the cathode.

It is a slow process. It is a fast process.

Corrosion is uniform. Corrosion is not uniform.

DRY CORROSION

Dry corrosion or oxidation occurs when

oxygen in the air reacts with metal
without the presence of a liquid.
Typically, dry corrosion is not as
detrimental as wet corrosion, but it is very
sensitive to temperature.
WET CORROSION
Wet corrosion occurs in presence of a liquid an electrolyte.
Problems with wet corrosion attacks in steels occur in
mineral acids,, seawater and other chloride containing media.
Examples of wet corrosion forms are:
1. Crevice corrosion
2. Galvanic corrosion
3. Pitting corrosion
4. Stress corrosion cracking (SCC)
Factors Affecting Corrosion:
Exposure of the metals to air containing gases like
CO2, SO2, SO3 , etc.
Exposure of metals to moisture especially salt water
(which increases the rate of corrosion).
Temperature: An increase in temperature increases
corrosion.
Presence of acid in the atmosphere: acids can easily
accelerate the process of corrosion.
CHALLENGES
Corrosion is a huge problem in the oil and natural gas (O&G) industry. It has a negative
impact on infrastructures utilized for exploration, production, processing and transport, which
affects costs and safety considerations [10]. .

Corrosive environments downhole can be caused by the presence of chlorides, CO2,

H2S and so forth. Pressure, temperature, pH and so forth also affect the
corrosively of downhole component.
CHALLENGES
Corrosion is a time-sensitive process.
Since most environmental factors can
vary markedly with time, the corrosion
performance of a metal may be
unbelievably dissimilar in different stages
There is a lack of high-technological
techniques to reveal the corrosion
mechanism faster and to calculate time
taken to to completely degrade the metal.
WAYS TO PREVENT
CORROSION:

Examples include such as:

Cathode Protection
Plating,
Galvanization, and
The formation of
alloys. etc.
Cathode Protection

Cathodic protection (CP) is a technique used to control

the corrosion of a metal surface by making it the
cathodic side of an electrochemical cell.
The simplest method to apply CP is by connecting the
metal to be protected with another more easily corroded
metal to act as the anode of the electrochemical cell.
Coatings:
Protective coatings are commonly used to
protect culturally significant works, such as
outdoor sculptures and architectural elements.

While the cost of damage due to corrosion is

much higher than that of more common coating
applications, the same types of protective
coatings are used.
Example:chromium is used as protective layers
for steel.
Conclusion

Corrosion as a material degradation process caused by the

reaction of the material with its surrounding medium has been
intensively and extensively investigated.
We also came across to challenges faced by corrosion in
industries.
Methods to prevent were also seen by us .

We thank our teachers for giving us this topic for group presentation, this topic
made us learn about how corrosion affects us and how it can be prevented by some
ways for some time.
