Mathematics 9 Quarter 4 Week 3

ANGLES OF ELEVATION AND ANGLES OF DEPRESSION

Name:_______________________________ Section:______________

Most Essential Learning Competency (MELC)

1. Illustrates angles of elevation and angles of depression. Code: M9GE-IVd-1

Learning Objectives
1. Defines and illustrates angles of elevation and depression.
2. Distinguish between angle of elevation and angle of depression.
3. Solves problems involving angle of elevation.
4. Solves problems involving angle of depression.
Time Allotment: 4 days
Mathematics 9 Learner’s Material, pp. 457-464

Key Concepts

Solving real-life problems involving right triangles requires knowledge of some significant
terms, such as line of sight, angle of elevation, and angle of depression.

Line of sight is an imaginary line that connects the eye of an observer to the object being
observed.
The angle of elevation is the angle from the horizontal to the line of sight of the observer to
the object above. The angle of depression is the angle from the horizontal to the line of sight
of the observer to the object below.

Activities

General Directions: Work on activities that follow. Do it on separate sheets of papers.

Activity 1. Identify Me!

Materials: A sheet of paper, WLAS/Learners Manual, ballpen.

Direction: In the following figures, identify the segment that represents the line of sight,
and identify the angles (if any) that represent the angle of elevation or angle of
depression.

Examples:

Figure Angle of Elevation Angle of Depression Line of Sight

O A
No angle of ∠AOB OA

Activity 2. Try This Out!

Materials: A sheet of paper, WLAS/Learners Manual, ballpen, scientific calculator.

Direction: Examine the examples inside the box on how to answer word problem
involving angle of elevation and angle of depression. Then, illustrate and solve the word
problems below. (5pts.)

Example 1.
A tower is 15.24 m high. At a certain distance away from the tower, an observer determines
that the angle of elevation to the top of it is 41°. How far is the observer from the base of the
tower?
Illustration:

Solution:

𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒
tan 𝜃 = A trigonometric ratio often helps us set up an
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡
equation, which can be solved for the missing
15.24 measurement. If two legs are part of the problem,
tan 41° =
𝑥 then it is a tangent ratio. If the hypotenuse part of
15.24 15.24 the problem, then it is either sine or cosine ratio.
𝑥= = = 17.52
tan 41° 0.87

Therefore, the distance of the observer from the base of the tower is 17.52 m.

Example 2.
An airplane is flying at a height of 4 kilometers above the ground. The distance along the
ground from the airplane to the airport is 6 kilometers. What is the angle of depression from the
airplane to the airport?

Illustration:
𝜽 6km

4km
6

Solution: Since the two legs are part of the problem then tangent ratio will be used.
𝑜𝑝𝑝𝑜𝑠𝑖𝑡𝑒 4𝑘𝑚
tan 𝜃 = = = 0.67 (to have a uniformity of answer, round your answer to
𝑎𝑑𝑗𝑎𝑐𝑒𝑛𝑡 6𝑘𝑚
the nearest hundredths)
(to solve 𝜃 used tan−1 , 𝑎𝑙𝑠𝑜 𝑐𝑎𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑑 𝑎𝑠 tan 𝑖𝑛𝑣𝑒𝑟𝑠𝑒)

𝜃 = tan−1 0.67 (used your scientific calculator while answering)

(click tan−1 and the number 0.67)

𝜃 = 33.82°

Therefore, the angle of depression from the airplane to the airport is 33.82°.

1. A hiker is 400 meters away from the base of the radio tower. The angle of elevation to
the top of the tower is 46°. How high is the tower?

2. An observer in a lighthouse 48.8 m above sea level saw two vessels moving directly
towards the lighthouse. He observed that the angles of depression are 42° and 35°. Find
the distance between the two vessels, assuming that they are coming from the same side
of the tower.

Reflection
Directions: Write three things that:
a. I have found out:
1. __________________________________________________________________________
2. __________________________________________________________________________
3. __________________________________________________________________________
b. I have learned that:
1. __________________________________________________________________________
2. __________________________________________________________________________
3. __________________________________________________________________________
c. I have learned more about:
1. __________________________________________________________________________
2. __________________________________________________________________________
3. __________________________________________________________________________

tan 46°(400𝑚) = 𝑥
𝑥 = tan 46°(400𝑚)
𝑥 = 1.03(400𝑚) = 412𝑚
Therefore, the height of the tower is 412 m.
