Key Concepts
Law of sines defines the ratio of sides of a triangle and their respective sine angles are
equivalent to each other. The law of sine is used to find the unknown angle or the side
of an oblique triangle.
An oblique triangle is a triangle which does not contain any right triangle.
Oblique triangle may be classified into two – acute and obtuse.
Activities
Directions:
Find the missing angle and identify whether the triangle is acute, obtuse, or neither.
Definitions:
An acute triangle is a triangle whose angles are all less than 900.
An obtuse triangle is a triangle in which one of the angles is more than 900.
3
Example:
.380 X = 1000
Obtuse
Solution:
Using the concept that the sum of the measures of the three angles in a
triangle is 1800. We have
800 + ∠ X = 1800
∠ X = 1800 – 800
∠ X = 1000

Directions:
Read and analyze the law of sines. Find the specified missing part of the
given triangle.
The Law of Sines
In any triangle ABC, with a, b, c as its sides and A, B, C as its angles,
a b c
or = =
sin A sin sin C
4
The Law of Sines can be used in solving oblique triangles if:
1. one side and two angles are given; (SAA Case)
2. two sides and an angle opposite one of the sides are given; (SSA Case)
3. two angles and an included side are given. (ASA Case)
Examples:
Solution:
Solving for c.
Since, side b and its opposite angle are not yet given.
sin 42° sin 70°
So, the formula used to solve for c is = .
6 c
Cross multiply c sine 420 = 6 sin 700
Compute the value of sin 420 & 700
using scientific calculator c (0.669) = 6 (0.9397)
Simplify the resulting equation 0.669 c = 5.6382
Divide both sides by the coefficient of c
0.669 c 5.6382
and use cancelation technique =
0.669 0.669
5.6382
solve for c c=
0.669
c = 8.43
Solving for b.
Notice that the opposite angle of side b is unknown. But you have learned in
your activity 1 the sum of the measures of the three angles is 1800. So,
1800 – 420 – 700 = 680 the unknown angle is 680. Following the steps used
earlier in solving for c, we now have
5
b. Given: Two angles and the included side (ASA Case)
Solving for x.
Using the concept that the sum of the y
measures of the angles of a triangle is x
1800, therefor the unknown angle is 800.
400 600
7
sin 40° sin 80°
We can use the formula =
x 7
Cross multiply x sin 800 = 7 sin 400
Compute for the value of sin 400
and 800 using scientific calculator x (0.9848) = 7 (0.6428)
simplify the resulting equation 0.9848 x = 4.4996
Divide both sides by the coefficient of c
0.9848 x 4.4996
and use cancelation technique =
0.9848 0.9848
4.4996
solve for x x=
0.9848
x = 4.57
Solving for y.
Following the steps used
earlier in solving for x, we now have
sin 60° sin 80° 0.9848 y 6.062
= =
 7 0.9848 0.9848
6.062
y sin 800 = 7 sin 600 b=
0.9848
y (0.9848) = 7 (0.8660) b = 6.16
0.9848 y = 6.062
c. Given: two sides and an angle opposite these sides (SSA Case)
Solutions: p 1200 10
Solving for .
Since angle , side p and its opposite
angle are unknown. so 19
sinθ sin 120°
we can use the formula = .
10 19
Cross multiply 19 (sin θ) = 10 (sin 1200)
Compute for the values of sin 1200 19 (sin θ) = 10 (0.8660)
Using a scientific calculator
Simplify the resulting equation 19 (sin θ) = 8.66
Divide both side by the coefficient of sin
19 sinθ 8.66
And use cancelation technique =
19 19
Solve for θ sin θ = 0.4558
θ = 27.120
6
Solving for b.
Using the value of to find the unknown angle. If 1800 – 1200 – 27.120 = 32.880,
therefor the unknown angle is 32.880. We can now solve for b.
sin 32.88° sin 120°
= 0.8660 b = 10.3151
 19
0.8660 b 10.3151
b sin 1200 = 19 sin 32.880 =
0.8660 0.8660
10.3151
b (0.8660) = 19 (0.5429) b=
0.8660
b = 11.91
