1.0 Project Overview

Located in Dhaka, Bangladesh, the project is an urban elevated expressway designed to


relieve traffic congestion in the Dhaka-Assulia urban area. The project starts at Shah Jalal
International Airport, runs north along an existing road, and ends at Bepel. This project
mainly adopts the American AASHTO standard and the national standard of Bangladesh.
Project includes 24 km four-lane elevated highways and 14.28 km from two lanes to
upgrade to four lanes of the transformation of the existing road, including import and
export of ramp of the elevated highway bridge, cars, toll station, central control building,
office building, Nabinagar independent interchange on behalf of the employer, pedestrian
overpasses, pedestrian crossing, traffic engineering, and along the facilities, etc.
The project is divided into three construction bid sections. The first bid section:
CH0+000-CH9+491; Two blocks CH9 + 491 - CH13 + 491; Three blocks: CH13 + 491 - CH23 +
791.

2.0 INTRODUCTION
The purpose of this document is to outline the proposed methodology for the
construction of the Cast-in-Situ Pilot Test Piles.
The purpose of pilot test pile is to establishing the suitability of the chosen
type of pile and conforming its design, dimensions and bearing capacity.
The design basis of this project is according to AASHTO LRFD Bridge
construction specifications 2017, 4th edition and the technical specifications of
standard tender documents of RHD, Bangladesh. June 2016, 3rd edition
The aim is to detail the sequence and method of construction, identify the
hazard, assess the associated risks involved, develop and implement adequate
control measures and to provide a safe place for work.
ensure that documentation is generated to record the installation activities
and to monitor the quality assurance.

All personnel will receive a site-specific induction. Before any works commence
a method of statement briefing will be conducted by the site management.
3.0 SCOPE OF WORK
The main test pile of the working platform project is 24. The first batch of first
nine test piles (TP01, TP02, TP03, TP04, TP05, TP06, TP07, TP08&TP09). The
second batch of 15 piles will be tested according to the actual situation. This
construction scheme describes the working method of test pile construction.

4.0 RESPONSIBILITIES
Subcontract project manager of each section shall be responsible for overall
operation activities inclusive of ensuring that all safety measures are
implemented.
The Project Engineer shall be responsible for the coordination and supervision
of construction activities and coordinate with other agencies and ensure that
the work is done as per specification and approved drawings and all safety
measures are implanted

5.0 METHODOLOGY OF THE WORKS


Each test pile shall be constructed in a manner similar to that of the working
pile, using the same equipment and materials. Any changes must be approved
in advance by the Employer's Engineer. Notice of application for inspection
shall be given to the Employer's Engineer 48 hours prior to the commencement
of any pile testing works. The construction method of cast-in-place test pile is
as follows

5.1 Working Platform


5.1.1 The drilling works will be carried out from a levelled working platform.
5.1.2 The working platform shall be prepared and maintained with suitable
compacted material or steel plates matting for the movement of the
equipment and the ready-mix concrete trucks.
5.1.3 The site shall be levelled and spacious enough to allow the machineries
to move freely to each point and every location without any obstructions.

According to the pile test layout, the work area shall be laid out in accordance
with the location shown on the drawing or approved by the Employer's
Engineer.
5.1.4 During the preparation of the Working Platform and prior to the start of
the drilling, an investigation should be carried out to assure the absence of any
obstructions at the pile locations. All utility services, old foundations, existing
pavement, obstacles or any objects interfering with the drilling works shall be
removed or diverted.
5.1.5 If the pilot pile construction area existing level is lower than the pile cut
off level, then the area shall be backfill with the suitable materials up to at
least 1m higher than the cut off level of pile.
5.1.6 For the stability the working area shall be well compact, layer by layer
with the suitable roller compactor.

5.2 Survey Works


A qualified surveyor will be employed full time with the modern survey
instruments like GPS, total station, level machine etc. to carry out the all
settings-out and surveying works during the pile construction.
5.2.1 The centre each pilot pile shall be fixed by the surveyor using coordinate
system. These points could also be checked and confirmed by the Contractor’s
Engineer.
5.2.2 The points will be marked by fixing steel pegs on the working platform.
After checking of points, the pegs will be driven into the ground or existing
pavement to protect it from getting disturbed.

5.3 Construction Sequence


The procedure for the construction of the Cast-In-Situ Pilot Test Piles
comprised of the following key elements:
1. Setting up at the pilot test pile location
2. Construction platform
3. Placement of the temporary casing
4. Drilling emplacement
5. Slurry preparation
6. Drilling works of the pile

5.3.1 Setting up at the pile location
The subcontractor will use GPS to locate and mark the test piles as shown on
the drawing or as approved by the employer's engineer. Pile position shall be
checked by the Employer's Engineer before drilling the test pile. (Hold Point).

5.3.2 Placement of the temporary casing


The temporary steel casings are used for the pile alignment and for the control
of the soft upper layer.
The Wall Thickness of the steel casing shall be around 10 mm to allow for
rigidity

Length of the temporary steel casing will depend on the depth of the soft
upper-layer and the water level.

The condition of these casings shall be free from significant distortion and shall
have a uniform cross-sectional dimensions throughout the length.
The temporary casings shall be installed by vibration using a vibro-hammer of
sufficient power or by rotation using the drilling rig machine.
The temporary Casing will be installed within a maximum deviation from the
center point of the pile of 100 mm in any direction. A surveyor with the
necessary equipment’s shall be present full time during the operation. The
location of the temporary protective container shall be inspected and
approved by the Employer's Engineer (Hold point).

5.4 Drilling of the Pilot Test Piles


After fixing the temporary casing concentrically to the pile center, the borehole
shall be drilled down to the set toe level in accordance with the approved pilot
pile design drawings by the use of buckets and/or augers mantled on the Kelly
bar of the rotary drilling rig. For stability of borehole the bentonite slurry has
to be supplied during the drilling time to prevent collapse or caving of the
borehole wall. To control of Bentonite/drilling fluid quality we will test density,
viscosity, gel strength and pH value in a certain period interval depending on
test results.
Verticality of the boreholes shall be continuously monitored by the use of a
spirit level placed on the Kelly Bar. The inclination of the pile shall not deviate
more than 1:100 from vertical. CMC will ensure the verticality of borehole by
using suitable equipment, such as an inverted pendulum at a certain period
intervals during drilling and prior to concreting.
The bentonite slurry level of borehole shall be always maintained at least 3.0m
higher than the caging bottom level or 2 .0m higher than the level of the ditch
water level or any artesian pressure level.

Subsequent to the completion of the drilling, the borehole depth and


coordinates shall be verified with respect to the test pile drawings and the
coordinates by the Contractor Engineer.

5.4.1 Washing/Cleaning of the borehole 1st time


The first hole cleaning shall be carried out by the gas lift reverse circulation
method or the pump suction reverse circulation method, and the new mud
shall flow into the hole for mud replacement, with the purpose of adjusting the
mud index in the hole in advance to meet the requirements before the
underwater concrete pouring.
The time between final excavation and bottom cleaning and the start of
concreting shall be kept as short as possible and shall not exceed 6 hours.

5.4.2 Install the Rebar Cages


Rebar cage shall be pre-fabricated at site; all of rebar hoops shall be bended by
bending machine. Dimension of rebar hoop, the connections and welding
connection have to conform to the required design drawing and the project
specifications. After inspected on ground, rebar cage shall be lower into the
borehole by crane. Ensure the length of rebar cage must be as per approved
design and drawing. A reference site datum level shall be given by the surveyor
to ensure the correct positioning of the cage with respect to the final cut off
level. Concrete spacer or equivalent (75mm) shall be tied to the cage to assure
the adequate concrete clear cover of the pile.

5.4.2.1Crosshole Sonic Test Access Tube Installation
After fabrications of rebar cages the steel access tube shall be installed
together with rebar cage of pile are as follows-
The access tubes shall be close-ended at the bottom and fitted with removable
end caps at the top to prevent entry of concrete or foreign objects, which
could block the tubes prior to testing operations.
The steel access tubes shall be installed such that their bottom is as close as
possible to the bottom of concrete pile.
The access tubes shall have a minimum concrete cover of one tube diameter.
The diameter of access steel pipe/tubes shall be at least 40 mm inside
diameter with minimum wall thickness 4 mm. The tubes shall have a round,
regular inside diameter free of defects and obstructions, including all pipe
joints, in order to permit the free, unobstructed passage of 35 mm maximum
diameter source and receiver probes used for the cross hole sonic log tests. As
per pilot test pile approved drawings the followings tubes numbers shall be
installed at each pile or approved by the Contractor’s Engineer.
For test pile diameter 1000 mm = 4 nos
For test pile diameter 1200 mm = 5 nos

For test pile diameter 1500 mm = 6 nos

The tubes shall be watertight, free from corrosion with clean internal and
external faces to ensure good bond between the concrete and the tubes.
The access tubes shall be secured to the inside of the main axial reinforcement
of the steel cage at frequent and regular intervals along their length to
maintain the tube alignment during cage lifting, lowering and subsequent
concreting of the pile.
During tubes installation, care shall be taken to ensure that all access tubes are
parallel to each other as possible. After installation of the reinforcement cage
into the pile, the top end caps shall be temporarily removed and the tubes
shall be inspected by the contractor engineer to verify they are clear of
obstructions.
The access tubes shall be filled with water prior to, or within one hour of,
concrete placement to assure good bonding of the concrete to the tubes after
the concrete cools.
The tubes length, joint details and their nominal position shall be recorded to
the neasest 10 mm.
If extension of tubes is necessary due to long tube length, access tube
couplings shall be used which prevent slurry or grout ingress during
construction.
As per ASTM D 6760 a typical access tubes layout configurations are as below

5.4.1.2 Installation of Strain Gauges


VCE 4200 Vibrating Wire Gauge manufactured by Geokon or similar brand
approved by the Employer's Engineer shall be used for strain gauge testing.
The steel cage should be placed side by side horizontally before installing the
strain gauge. According to the pile test drawing, 4 strain gages are placed at 5
m vertical spacing.

5.4.2 Install the Tremie Pipe


After placing the rebar cage, install the tube to the required depth. The inner
diameter of the feeding pipe should not be less than 150mm, the pipe should
be clean and always watertight.

5.4.3 Washing/Cleaning of the borehole 2nd time:


After the pipe is installed, bentonite mud shall be used for the second second
cleaning and no precipitation at the bottom of the hole. After the bottom
cleaning is completed, will measure the depth. If the depth meets the
requirements of the drawing, the concrete will be poured.
5.4.4 Placing of Concrete
Concrete to be placed under water or drilling fluid shall be placed by tremie
pipe and shall not be discharged freely into the water or drilling fluid. Before
placing concrete, the contactor shall ensure that there is no accumulation of
silt, other materials, or heavily contaminated bentonite suspension at the base
of the boring, which could impair the free flow of concrete from the pipe of
tremie. If the specific gravity of the suspension exceeds 1.25 the placing of
concrete shall not proceed. In this event the mud quality shall be modified. The
concrete shall be supplied continuously from approved ready-mix plant, and
without such interrupt as would allow the previously placed batch to have
hardened. The tremie pipe shall at all times penetrate the concrete, which has
previously been placed and shall not be withdrawn from the concrete until

completion of concreting. The bottom of the tremie pipe shall be kept at least
2 metres under the surface of concrete once that amount of concrete has been
placed. Workability of the concrete shall not be less than 150 mm.
The pile shall be concreted with a certain over height to allow for chiselling off
the top concrete down to sound hard concrete.
After concreting, the temporary casing shall be withdrawn by rotation using the
piling rig or a vibro-hammer. When the casing is being extracted, a sufficient
quantity of concrete shall be maintained within it to ensure that pressure from
external water or soil is exceeded and that the pile is neither reduced in section
nor contaminated.

5.4.5 Disposal of Drilling Spoils


Excavated material shall not be dumped into a ditch or any connected
watercourse without permission. Slag/mud resulting from drilling shall be
stored on site and transported regularly by vehicle to the appropriate location.

6.0 QUALITY CONTROL


The Quality Control activities during construction of cast-in-situ pilot test pile
shall cover the determination of density, viscosity, gel strength and PH value of
drilling fluid. The other quality control activities shall be maintained are as
follows or according to the specification:

The diameter of pile shall not be less than the specified diameter
The centre of pile shall not deviate more than 100 mm at any direction
Vertical alignment shall not deviate more than 1:100
Pile clear cover shall be 75 mm
Reinforcement of test pile shall be deformed bar with minimum yield stress
500 N/mm2 and shall conform to ASTM A615
Minimum lap length of helix shall be 500mm
Laps shall be staggered and not more than 50% of bars are lapped in any cross
section
Joints in longitudinal bar shall be maintain proper welding’s
Steel tubes/pipe for sonic test shall be 40mm inside diameter with 4mm wall
thickness
The sonic test tubes installation position shall be check as drawings
The strain gauge installation position shall be check as per drawing
Ensure the strain gauge numbers and positions, 4 nos per section @ 5 m
vertical interval
The concrete of pile shall be 30 Mpa
Workability(slump) of concrete shall be minimum 150 mm
9 nos Cylinder(150x300) sample per pile shall be taken for strength check
test per 25m3 concrete shall be maintain
Ensure the tremie pipe bottom always penetrate 2m into the concrete during
the casting
After construction of the pile, axial load test, lateral load test and acoustic test
shall be carried out in accordance with the Code and ASTM standards and a
report shall be submitted to the Employer Engineer for approval. A separate
test plan shall be submitted for approval.

7.0 HEALTH AND SAFETY PROVISION


The project specific health and safety shall be developed and implemented
which includes necessary precautions and adequate measures to be taken
during the pilot pile construction works. The following shall be maintained
during the works.

8.1 All Operative shall be made aware of the HSE requirement for drilling, steel
fixing and concrete casting works.
8.2 Appropriate Personal Protective Equipment’s (PPE) shall be available and
worn by all operatives
8.3 All non-motorized equipment’s and tools will be mechanically lifted into the
work area
8.4 Only trained and skill operatives shall be involved in this activity.

8.0 PLANT & EQUIPMENT


For the operation of pilot test pile construction adequate plant and equipment
shall be present at site as per requirement. And also in case of mechanical
problems a backup arrangements shall be available at site. The following shall
