Description
1 General
This data module gives the information on the selection of solid rivets and their removal and installation. The
information is in these parts:
− Rivet identification
UNCLASSIFIED
2 Rivet Identification
There are many types of solid rivet. The rivet types are different in the shape of the head, the material specification,
the length and the diameter. Refer to the applicable engineering drawing or repair drawing for the selection of the
correct type of rivet.
Where possible, the rivet material must not be harder than the material which will be riveted. Also, the materials
must be of the same type (for example, do not use steel rivets to rivet aluminium structure). Assemble the rivets
with sealant to prevent contact corrosion.
Rivet pitch is the distance between the centers of two rivet holes. The rivet pitch is approximately 5 times the
diameter of the rivet.
Edge distance is the distance from the center of the rivet hole to the edge of the material. The edge distance shall
be 2 times the diameter of the rivet plus 0.04 in (1 mm).
6.1 Removal
CAUTION
BE CAREFUL WHEN RIVETS ARE REMOVED. DO NOT CAUSE DAMAGE TO ADJACENT STRUCTURE.
DAMAGE CAN OCCUR THAT CAN NOT BE REPAIRED.

riveted part.
2 For countersunk head rivets make sure the bottom surface of the rivet head fully touches the top surface of the
countersink.
3 For the upset head of the rivet, make sure that:
- Radial hairline cracks are not longer than one eighth the diameter of the upset head and only on the edge of
the upset head (it is recommended that there are no cracks)
- There are no large cracks or concentric cracks
- The upset head is in the level and eccentric limit
4 Between the rivets, make sure that the gap between the riveted sheets is less than 0.012 in (0,3 mm).
5 Make sure the gap between the riveted sheets at the rivet shank is less than 0.003 in (0,07 mm).

WARNING
BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU USE THE CONSUMABLE MATERIALS. OBEY THE MANUFACTURERS' HEALTH
AND SAFETY INSTRUCTIONS AND ALL THE APPLICABLE LOCAL INSTRUCTIONS. CONSUMABLE
MATERIALS CAN BE DANGEROUS AND CAN CAUSE DEATH OR INJURY TO PERSONNEL AND/OR
DAMAGE TO EQUIPMENT.
Note
To identify the consumable items used in this procedure refer to the Consumable Materials List, AMM 12-
B-20-31-00-00A-070A-A.
Procedure
1 Note
This procedure repairs skin cracks that start from the top rivet that attaches the vertical stabilizer skin to
the rear spar.
This procedure installs doublers Figure 2 [5], angles Figure 2 [4] and a shims Figure 2 [3] to the top of
the rear spar cap. If a skin crack is found on one side then the repair is done to both sides of the vertical
stabilizer.
If necessary, move the horizontal stabilizer trim for better access to the repair area.
2 Put the Warning sign (DO NOT MOVE THE ELEVATOR CONTROLS) (Pt.No. Local supply) in the
flight compartment.
3 Hold the horizontal stabilizer fairing Figure 2 [1] and remove the screws Figure 2 [2].
4 Remove the horizontal stabilizer fairing Figure 2 [1].
5 Remove the surface finish, primer and corrosion protection sufficient to find the end of the crack in the
vertical stabilizer skin, refer to 12-B-51-20-01-00A-650A-A.
6 Examine the crack length:
− If the length of the crack extends to the top row of rivets in the end cap contact Pilatus Aircraft Ltd
for additional repair instructions.
− Give as much information about the damage as possible.
7 Make the parts from the materials as follows:
− The two doublers Figure 2 [5] from Sheet AA 2024-T3 1,0 mm (0.039 in) (Pt.No. 916.16.45.210)
− The two angles Figure 2 [4] from Extrusion AA 2024-T3511 20x20x2 mm (Pt.No. 916.86.38.116)
− The two shims Figure 2 [3] from Sheet AA 2024-T3 4,0 mm (Pt.No. Local supply).
Make sure that the parts are made to the dimensions given in Fig. 2 . Make the top and the aft sides of
the doublers Figure 2 [5] to the shape of the vertical stabilizer.

8 Stop drill the end of the crack with a 1/8 in. (3,2 mm) drill. Deburr the hole and remove all the
unwanted material from the area.
9 CAUTION
TAKE CARE NOT TO DAMAGE THE ADJACENT STRUCTURE WHEN YOU REMOVE THE
RIVETS. IF YOU DRILL INTO ADJACENT STRUCTURE BY MISTAKE YOU CAN DO DAMAGE
THAT CANNOT BE REPAIRED.
Remove the rivets and the three aft anchor nuts from the skin, refer to Fig. 2 and 12-
B-51-40-01-00A-041A-A.
10 Remove the rivets from the left and right aft spar caps as follows:
− Remove the top three rivets from the forward side
− Remove the top four rivets from the outer side
− If it is necessary to replace the strap, remove the remaining rivets that install the strap to the rear
spar web
− Refer to 12-B-51-40-01-00A-041A-A.
11 Make marks for the hole positions of the six rivet holes on each angle Figure 2 [4]. Drill pilot holes at
the rivet hole positions.
12 Make marks to show the positions of the three holes for the rivets that attach each doubler Figure 2 [5]

WARNING
OBEY THE SAFETY PRECAUTIONS GIVEN IN AMM 12-B-20-50-00-00A-901A-A.
Procedure
1 General
This document gives the data and procedures necessary when fretting, tooling or scratch damage is
found on the wing and fuselage attachment fittings. The necessary procedures are:
− Make a photographic record of all damaged areas before and after the blend repair
− Blend repair of the damage
− Measure and record the repaired areas
− Do a fluorescent penetrant or eddy current NDT inspection of all the repaired areas, refer to AMM
12-B-57-00-03-00A-353A-A. If you do an eddy current NDT inspection, use a rotating probe.
2 Photographic Record
Note
This procedure uses a pseudo-clock system to identify the location from fretting, tooling or scratch
damage:
− 12 o'clock and 6 o'clock are always top and bottom
− For the fuselage frame fittings, the 3 o'clock position is always on the outboard side and the 9
o'clock position on the inboard side
− For the wing spar fittings, the 3 o'clock position is always on the inboard side and the 9 o'clock
position on the outboard side.
This is independent when seen from front or rear and is the only way to identify photographs at a later
date, Refer to Fig. 1 , Fig. 2 and Fig. 3 .
Before repair work is started on a fitting where damage has been found, make a photographic record
as follows:
2.1 Make a Cardboard template (Pt.No. Local supply) for marking the clock positions, refer to the example
shown in Fig. 2 .
2.2 Refer to Fig. 2 . Use the Cardboard template (Pt.No. Local supply) and Permanent black marker
pen (Pt.No. Local supply) and identify the clock positions on the attachment fitting. Identify the 3, 6, 9
and 12 o’clock positions.
2.3 Use the Permanent black marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) to mark each wing and fuselage
attachment fitting with an identity, for example C1, C2 and C3, LH or RH, FWD or AFT face and the
aircraft MSN. This is the reference face.
UNCLASSIFIED
2.4 Make photographs of each fitting to show the damage. Make sure the photographs show the fitting
identification data. The photographs is part of the damage analysis procedure for the area.
3 Repair
Note
If there is more than one damaged area (fretting, tooling or scratch marks) in the fitting bore, do a blend
repair for each area and not one for the whole area. Each blend repair must only remove sufficient
material to remove the damage.
3.1 Make Absorbent paper (Pt.No. P02-031) moist with Solvent (Pt.No. P01-010) and fully clean the fitting
bore. Clean until moist absorbent paper stays clean when applied to the surface.
3.2 Attach pieces of Tape, aluminum (Pt.No. P09-012) to make a rectangle shape around the damaged
area in the bore. Attach sufficient Tape, aluminum (Pt.No. P09-012) to give protection to the area of
the bore that is not damaged.
3.3 Use the abrasive cloth to remove all the damage from the bore in the sequence as follows:
− Abrasive cloth, grade 120 (Pt.No. P02-009)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 150 (Pt.No. P02-010)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 240 (Pt.No. P02-011)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 320 (Pt.No. P02-013).
3.4 Make sure that the length-to-depth ratio of each blend repair is within the limits given in Fig. 6 .
3.5 Use the Abrasive pads (very fine grade) (Pt.No. P02-016) to polish the repair area.
3.6 Remove the aluminum tape from the bore. Examine the repair to make sure that all the damage has
been removed.
3.7 Remove the damage (fretting, tooling or scratch marks) on the side face of lugs C3 and C4, below the
sliding bush flanges. Use the abrasive cloth to remove all the damage from the bore in the sequence
as follows:
− Abrasive cloth, grade 120 (Pt.No. P02-009)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 150 (Pt.No. P02-010)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 240 (Pt.No. P02-011)
− Abrasive cloth, grade 320 (Pt.No. P02-013).
3.8 Use the Abrasive pads (very fine grade) (Pt.No. P02-016) to polish the repair area.
3.9 Make Absorbent paper (Pt.No. P02-031) moist with Solvent (Pt.No. P01-010) and fully clean the repair
areas. Clean until moist absorbent paper stays clean when applied to the surface.
4 Blend Repair Measurement and Record
4.1 General
The paragraph gives the procedure to measure and record the dimensions of the blend repair(s) done
in the bore of a wing or a fuselage fitting.
4.2 Make sure there are no dirt particles on the outer surface of the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003)
that could scratch the inside surfaces of the bores in the fittings. Set the Measuring
tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) probe height to 0.024 - 0.027 in (0,6 - 0,7 mm) above the tool outside
surface.
4.3 Push the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) with the measuring probe facing rearwards into the
bore of the repaired fitting. This is to prevent damage to the measuring probe.
UNCLASSIFIED
Note
On the fittings that have more than one lug, position the measuring tool through a minimum of two of
the bores to keep it stable.
4.4 Slowly pull the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) out of the bore until the measuring probe is
away from the blend repair area and sufficiently to get access to the dial gage.
4.5 Move the dial gage to zero the pointer.
4.6 For each blend repair, use the internal mirror of the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) and the
Small mirror (Pt.No. Local supply) as necessary to position the measuring probe over the center of the
blend repair in the bore.
4.7 Slowly rotate the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) until the measuring probe is at the top edge of
the blend repair. Use the Marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) and mark this position on the attachment
fitting clock markings.
4.8 Slowly rotate the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) in the opposite direction until the measuring
probe is at the bottom edge of the blend repair. Use the Marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) to mark this
position on the attachment fitting clock markings.
4.9 Record the aircraft MSN fitting identification and mark the grid locations of the blend repairs on the
Grid Plan, refer to Fig. 4 .
4.10 Measure the angle between the clock marks made in the above steps. Change the degree angle to
millimeters as follows (the degree angle divided by 360 and multiplied by 125.7). Record the
dimension on the Blend Repair Measurement Table, Dimension C of Fig. 4 .
4.11 Slowly rotate the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) back to the center of the blend repair in the
bore.
4.12 Slowly push the measuring tool into the bore until the measuring probe is at the far edge of the blend
repair. Use the Marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) and mark this position on the circumference of the
Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003).
4.13 Slowly pull the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) out of the bore until the measuring probe is at
the near edge of the blend repair. Use the Marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) and mark this position on
the circumference of the measuring tool.
4.14 Measure the distance between the two marks on the circumference of the Measuring
tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003). Record the dimension on the Blend Repair Measurement Table,
Dimension W of Fig. 4 .
4.15 Slowly pull the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) out of the bore until the measuring probe is at
the edge of the reference face. Use the Marker pen (Pt.No. Local supply) and mark this position on the
circumference of the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003).
4.16 Measure the distance between the blend near edge mark and the reference face mark on the
circumference of the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003). Record the dimension on the Blend
Repair Measurement Table, Dimension E of Fig. 4 .
4.17 Slowly push the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) into the bore area that is not damaged and
make sure the dial gage pointer is at zero. Move the dial gage to zero the pointer if necessary.
4.18 Slowly rotate the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) between the marked clock positions and
along the center line of the blend repair in the bore. Record the maximum pointer reading.
4.19 At the point of the maximum pointer reading move the Measuring tool (Pt.No. 513.57.12.003) between
the blend repair marks on the circumference of the measuring tool. Record the pointer reading if it
shows more than that recorded during Step 4.18.
4.20 Slowly push the measuring tool into the bore until the measuring probe is away from the blend repair
in the bore.
4.21 Do Step 4.17 thru Step 4.20 again to make sure that the measurements are correct.
