Unit Plan-Collection One: Chasing Success

Online Instructions: To simplify this process for you, I am asking that you complete three tasks for each selection in
Collection One: 1. Read (or watch the video selections), 2. Respond to the discussion question with a one paragraph
response in the comments section of the VOC 12 WIKI and reply to at least three other students’ comments, and 3.
Complete the “Analyze the Text” (or the questions within the close reads) questions for each selection in 2-4 complete
sentences and share them with me. Work needs to be completed by 2pm on the day it is due. Late work will not be
accepted. I will grade between 2-4pm each day.

write an argument: Should all students have a longer school
day and shorter vacations? 1. Write a clear statement of your
claim (opinion). 2. Outline at least three reasons that support
your claim. 3. Gather evidence from “Marita’s Bargain”, at
least one other text in Collection One, and your personal
experience to support your three reasons.

Kewauna’s Ambition: 1. Why was Kewauna successful?


2. What central idea does Tough make about Kewauna’s success?
3. What obstacles did Kewauna have to overcome, and what did she do to overcome them?

Don’t Eat Fortune’s Cookie: 1. What ideas does Lewis express about success and how people are rewarded?
2. How do his ideas relate to you graduating from High School?
A Right to Choose Single-Sex Education: 1. What is the author’s main claim or argument? What are the strengths and
weaknesses of it? 2. What is your opinion on this issue?

The Secret to Raising Smart Kids: 1. What are the two different mindsets about intelligence and learning?
2. Is the author’s evidence convincing? 3. What is your opinion about this issue?

A Walk to the Jetty: 1. Discuss Annie John’s view of her life on the island. 2. How important is a person’s home and
family in their future? Explain how these influences will affect you in the future.

Next Term, We’ll Mash You: 1. Why does Charles not tell his parents about the boy’s threat? 2. How would his parents
reacted if Charles had told them? 3. What would you have done in this situation? Why?
