PRAYER INTRODUCTION

One of the core values that we uphold as

Lasallians is the value of faith.
As new members of the Lasallian family
not only here in the Philippines but all over the
world we welcome you in this community.
DLSU-D adheres to the Mission of our
holy Founder, St. John Baptist de La Salle who
put premium in educating young people like you
that you may be able to realize your full potentials
as persons recognizing that everything that you are
and everything that you have is a gift from God.
These are the essentials that you may become the
persons that you were meant to be so that you may
be able to share this with your community.
Having said this, we deem it important that we always begin our classes with the Gospel
Reading and Reflection: (We recognize the presence of non-Christians in our University, for this
reason, we encourage you to make use of your own religious text or tradition. What is important
here is what binds us together, the recognition of the Higher power who is present in our midst).
1. Read through the Gospel (for non-Christians, your own religious text from your own religion)
included in this module.
2. Please note that prior to of the prayer/Gospel reading we remind ourselves that we are in the
holy Presence of God. Thus we say: “Let us remember that we are in the holy Presence of
God.”
3. After the reading/prayer we ask the intercession of our holy Founder and ask Jesus/God to
dwell in our hearts forever by saying: “St. John Baptist de La Salle… pray for us. Live Jesus
in our hearts … Forever.”

Gospel Reading: (Sept 6, 2021)

Gospel – Luke 6:6-11

Let us remember that we are in the Holy Presence of God:

6
On a certain sabbath Jesus went into
the synagogue and taught, and there was a
man there whose right hand was
withered.
7
The scribes and the Pharisees watched
him closely to see if he would cure on the
sabbath so that they might discover a
reason to accuse him.
8
But he realized their intentions and said to the man
with the withered hand, “Come up and stand before
us.” And he rose and stood there.
9
Then Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to
do good on the sabbath
rather than to do evil, to save life rather than to
destroy it?”
10
Looking around at them all, he then said to him,
“Stretch out your hand.”
He did so and his hand was restored.
11
But they became enraged and discussed together what they might do to Jesus.

The Gospel of the Lord … Praise to you O Lord Jesus Christ.

Understanding the Self
Module 1: Introduction

A short reflection from the Gospel Reading:

(From the story of Loretta Pehanich)

“Please pray!” my panicked daughter said. A door at school smashed her four-year-old
son’s hand, and he required surgery.
“You can count on it,” I assured her, wishing they lived closer than across the country so I
could run right over. I wondered what saint I could ask to pray with me for Preston.
The next morning, the day’s reading was Jesus healing a man with a withered hand (Mark
3:1–6).
I put myself into the story and observed Jesus on the Sabbath, just like the Pharisees did. Would
Jesus work a miracle? The man with the withered hand walked forward shyly, embarrassed to be
the center of attention. My view was obstructed by the grate sectioning off the women’s area. As I
contemplated the sights and smells of the synagogue, I wished I could get closer to Jesus and the
man.
Just like you want to be near your grandson.
Not a servant girl any more in the scene, I became the grandmother, longing to step
forward. The first-century synagogue morphed into a hospital as I prayed for Preston. I could
imagine Jesus present with my grandson in the disguise of his doctor.
And it finally dawned on me that the man in the Gospel passage wasn’t an imaginary figure,
but a brother in heaven. I could ask him to pray for my grandson! That man’s hand was strong,
whole, and no longer withered. “Will you pray for my grandson’s crushed finger and ask Jesus to
heal him?” I asked.
“Sure!” he might have replied.
I imagined hearing Jesus say, “Stretch out your hand.” I pictured Jesus, the man from the
Gospel, and me standing with Preston.
“What was it like for you when you were healed?” I whispered to the man healed of a
withered hand.
“I felt an itchy sensation, and I couldn’t help using my healthy hand to tug at my fingers to
settle the tingling. It was as if my fingers re-knit themselves as I rubbed them.”
Having broken my arm more than once, I relate to the tingling sensation under a cast. I smiled and
gave thanks to God. I continued praying with the image of Jesus as caring healer.
My grandson came through his surgery with flying colors. Months later his finger is as good
as new. I know God is hearing my prayers every day, in jaw-dropping ways. Is God really that
amazing: to give me a Gospel of the day that’s perfectly suited to my needs at prayer? Absolutely.
The Gospel doesn’t give the man with a withered hand a name. From now on, I think I’ll call him
Preston.

FORMATIVE ASSESSMENT (Class Participation):

Write a short reflection about the Gospel Reading today:

1. Read the Gospel passage again and try to visualize that you were present in that particular
scene.
2. Notice your thoughts and feelings.
3. What does it tell you about your life at the moment?
4. Write down your reflection.

Let us pray:

God our loving Father, we thank you for the grace that you have bestowed upon us to be
here in your Holy Presence and with each other in the first day of our class, Understanding the
Self. We offer you everything that this subject will take us on starting today and for the rest of the
semester. We ask you to bless each one of us gathered today with wisdom of being able to
understand with gratitude of who we are. May this understanding lead us towards greater love for
You and for one another. Guide us every step of the way. May we never falter along the way, but if
we fall, grant us the courage to rise again believing that You are always there, and that, You never
abandon us. Amen.

St. John Baptist de La Salle … Pray for us! Live Jesus in our hearts … Forever!

Your professor
A warm welcome to all of you in this class, Understanding
the Self!
I am Professor Marinel B. Nagtalon - Cordero. I prefer to
be called by my nickname, Mae.
I am a new faculty member at the Psychology Department
of the College of Liberal Arts and Communication.
However, I am not new to the teaching profession as I had
already taught psychology courses before at the University
of the Philippines – Los Banos, San Beda University –
Manila, University of St. La Salle - Bacolod City, and at the
Makati Medical Center College.
I am in the Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) level of my studies
in Clinical Psychology as my major and Developmental
Psychology as my minor. I am a Bachelor of Arts degree
graduate from the University of the Philippines – Diliman with a major in Humanities.
I have trainings and certifications in Life Coaching, Gestalt Therapy, and in a Mindfulness Teacher
Course.
Aside from being an educator, I am a Life Coach, a Speaker, and a Workshop Designer and
Facilitator at the Life Coach Mae – Fount of Wellness.
I am a consultant Junior Counselor at the DLSU-D Center of Applied Psychology (D-CAP). I have
been an active Psychosocial Support Specialist in Disaster Response with organizations such as the
D-CAP, UP-Diliman Psychological Services (UP PsycServ), World Vision International, Operation
Blessing of the 700 Club and CBN Asia, Health Futures Foundation, and the Philippine Relief and
Development Services, Inc. (PHILRADS). I had provided psychosocial support services at the
Bohol Earthquake (2013), Typhoon Yolanda (2013 -2014), and Taal Volcano Eruption (2020)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7DdIekUXYfs , to name a few. I have provided telecounseling/
telepsychotherapy and telecoaching services during the COVID-19 Pandemic.

In the pre-pandemic time, I loved to go out to dine and meet with my family and friends and travel
with them to different places. Now, I connect with them through chats and video calls.

Since activities are mostly accessed online now, I have enrolled in various online courses such as
Mindfulness, Neuro-Linguistic Programming, Tension and Trauma Releasing Exercises (TRE),
Positive Psychology, etc. to add to my life coaching and psychotherapy/ counseling skills and tools.
I do a lot of online work, e-learning, and reading during this pandemic time.

How about you? What are the fun, productive, and self-growth activities that fill your time during
the pandemic?
