How do you plan to implement this lesson and integrate the technology? Check all that apply:

☐ Teacher-led: There is no student voice and choice in the activities. Students are guided by the
teacher's direction and expectations. Learning activities are assigned to the student and mostly
practice based.

☒ Student-Led: Students are given voice and choice in the activities. They may select the topic of
learning and/or determine the tool they will use to meet the learning goal. The teacher facilitates
the learning as the students direct their own learning processes.

☒ Problem-based and/or Publishable: Students are solving problems and completing projects to
demonstrate their learning. Additionally, the projects can be shared outside of the classroom.
(Note: This objective could be reached by displaying the project on the school’s morning
newscast, posting the project to the classroom blog, presenting it to another class, or publishing
it via an outside source.)

Lesson idea implementation:

Students will be put into small groups. Each small group will be given (or picked at random) an event
described in Unit 1. Students will research their event with the group, and then create a script for
the newscast to describe the event, when it took place, what happened, and the impact is has (or
will have) on American life at the time. Students will then create a presentation whether audio or
video, to highlight the event to their peers. If chosen audio, they will aim to create a radio
announcement, providing the script for peers as well. If chosen video, they will aim to create a
newsflash on television. The teacher will facilitate group discussions and trouble shoot technology,
as well as assess the scripts as they are created. Group members will assess group work, other
groups will assess for creativity and if the asked for information is present, and the teacher will
assess the accuracy of the information presented. The students will present the projects to the class,
and the projects may also be published outside of the classroom such as the morning school
announcements, the school blog, or any other means.
Managing student learning:
The teacher will need to facilitate group work time to keep students on track and have group members keep
each other accountable for their work, as part of the group work assessments. Students will show the scripts
for the project before using the technology to ensure that the information is ready, and to maximize the
active learning of research. The teacher will employ the Ask 3 then Me arrangement for technology use, to
have students ask peers for advice before asking the teacher, to encourage exploration of the technology
used. The teacher will assist, and trouble shoot after 3 peers have been asked.
Universal Design for Learning (UDL) Reflection:
Due to the group nature of the project, students may divide the research and creation portion of the
assignment into manageable sections and can have their peers work on parts they excel at. The
students also get to decide what their media will be for their presentation creation, allowing for
UDL: Multiple Means of Action and Expression. Because each student will be creating a script for
their media, other students within the class will be able to access the presented information
allowing for UDL Multiple Means of Representation.
Reflection:
I feel like this assignment will be a neat way to embed research into the classroom, as well as a fun
way to present the information. Each student will present a different event, allowing for full
coverage of the unit, and additional instruction supplementation can be added as needed. I look
most forward to the presentations of these projects.
