B. LESSON PROPER

Key take a ways:

RATIO – Comparison of two or more quantities (a:b)

RATE – a special type of ratio used to compare quantities that can be expressed in the same unit.

PROPORTION – the equality of two ratios.

RATIO - is the comparison of two or more quantities.

4 ways on writing a Ratio

> Phase Form (4 is to 10)
> Colon Form (4:10)
> Division Form (4 10)
> Fraction Form (4/10)
Ex . Given: x = 6, y = 18, z =5
Give each ratio in simplest form.
a. x / y = 6/ 18 = 1/3 or 1:3

b. y to z = 18 : 15 = 6/5 or 6:5

c. x + z + : y = 6 + 15: 18 = 21:18 = 7/6 or 7:6

RATE – a special type of ratio used to compare quantities that can be expressed in the
same unit. (SCIENCE and Integration)

Sample of rate:

1. a taxi travels at an average speed of 70 kilometers per hour

2. an office secretary can type 120 words per minute
3. a painter consumes paint of one gallon of paint for every 50 sq. ft of surface

Sample problem using RATE:

4. As a proofreader, eliza reads 3 pages of a manuscript in 15 minutes . at this rate,

how many pages will she be able to read in 45 minutes.

3 pages : 15 minutes
(9 pages ) : 45 minutes

- Eliza can read 9 pages of manuscript in 45 minutes.

PROPORTION -is a statement that would describes equality of two ratios.

It can be an expression of two equal fractions such as: a/b = c/d or in colon form: a:b = c:d

Two ratios are said to be equal, if the cross products of the ratio are equal
To find the missing term in a proportion,
Product of means = product of extremes
ad = bd

Example 1. Find the value of x in the following proportions.

a. 9/x = 15/20
9(20) = x(15) Cross multiply
180/15 = 15x/15 Simplify
12 = x Solve for x

Example 2. Maria reads 20 pages in 15 minutes. At this rate, how many pages will she read in 60 minutes?
(SCIENCE and Integration)

Solution : pages/minute Step 1. Identify the elements in the problem

Sol. Step 2. Set up the proportion statement
20 pages/ 15minutes = x pages/ 60 minutes Step 3. Apply cross multiplication of the ratios
20 (60) = 15(x)
1200/15 = 15x/15 Answer : there are 80 pages Maria can
x = 80 read in 60 minutes.

Example 3. How is the concept of the ratio can be used in business? (TLE and Integration)

Due to COVID 19 pandemic, you thought of putting up an online business to have an

additional income. You decided to try to bake banana cake at home. Based on the recipe you
have researched online, the banana cake recipe calls for 2 cups of flour and 1 cup of sugar.
then from this, you decided to double the recipe.

First ratio of ingredients – 2 cups of flour : 1 cup of sugar

If doubled, it will become 4 cups of flour : 2 cups of sugar

5.

Group RATE (Immediate learners)

In San Isidro NHS, there are 28 female students IP’s and 21 male.
a. What is the ratio of male Ip’s to Female IP’s?
-21/28 = 7/7 = ¾ or 3:4
b. What is the ratio of Female IP’s to the total number of IP’s students?
-28/49 = 7/7 = 4/7 or 4:7

Group PROPORTION (Gifted and Independent Learners) (ART and Integration)

1. DRAW A CLOCK and label the missing value of x to the given proportion into hours.
1hr : 30mins = x : 60mins
= 120mins
2. DRAW A CLOCK and label the missing value of x to the given proportion into hours.
90mins : x = 1hr : 60mins
= 90mins

D. GENERALIZATION
Let’s generalized what you’ve got!

RATIO -is the comparison of two or more quantities.

RATE – a special type of ratio used to compare quantities that can be expressed in the same unit.
PROPORTION - is a statement that would describes equality of two ratios.
