Connecting OACS to On-Prem Data Sources using RDG

Connecting Oracle Analytics Cloud to On-Prem Data Sources using

Remote Data Gateway

Oracle Analytics Cloud Service (OACS) by Oracle Cloud, a Platform as a Service (PaaS) is a scalable and
secure public cloud service. It offers a comprehensive analytics platform to explore and perform
collaborative analytics at any scale, in any environment and on any device for an enterprise. It offers
connectivity to various data sources ranging from Flat Files (excel & CSV), Relational Databases
(Oracle, MS SQL, MYSQL, Postgres, IBM Db2 etc), NO SQL Data Sources (MongoDB & Apache Hive) and
Non-Oracle Cloud Applications (Google Drive, Google Analytics, Drobox etc).

Hybrid BI architecture allows you to move your reporting layer into the Oracle Cloud through OACS
and may have your data sources/Data Warehouse still on-premises and have a solid connection to talk
to each other.

There are 3 ways to connect OAC to On-Premise Data Sources.

1. Remote Data Connector:

Remote Data Connector provides a secure connection to on-premise database sources for analysis in
the cloud. It offers secure access to on-premises data using private or public keys. It has incorporated
the process for keeping the data secure while OAC submits queries.

Remote Data Connector supports different databases such as IBM DB2, Oracle Database, MS SQL
Server, Teradata and so on.

2. Fast Connect:

Oracle Cloud Fast Connect can create direct connection between the data centre and Oracle cloud
environment. It provides high bandwidth with a great amount of data volume. By using Fast Connect
we can choose to use private peering, public peering or both.

3. VPN-as-a-Service (VPNaaS):

Oracle supports VPN as a Service option for cloud deployments, connecting OAC to on-premise data
sources other than Oracle DB. Establishing a VPN connection between the OAC environment and the
data centre allows the tools within OAC to consume the data.

This article explains in detail about Remote Data Gateway which is the latest version released by
Oracle.

Remote Data Gateway:

The latest release of OAC includes the new Remote Data Gateway (RDG) for accessing databases. Data
Gateway replaces the Remote Data Connector utility that was used in previous releases. Even though
Remote Data Connector can still be used, it's deprecated starting with Oracle Analytics Cloud 105.3
and will be removed in future releases. Oracle recommends moving to Data Gateway for the upcoming
release of version 105.3 to avoid loss of functionality.

Step 1:

Install Data Gateway in your on-premise environment. When Data Gateway is installed, a single Data
Gateway agent is created on that machine. The new Data Gateway can be installed on multiple
machines, creating multiple Data Gateway agents for load balancing.

Installing Data gateway in a Linux machine

Install Data Gateway in the on-premise environment using an Oracle Universal Installer file.

 Make the bi_rdc_client installer file executable (for example, using chmod 777), then execute
the installer file
 If a Welcome dialog is displayed, click Next
 At the Installation Location dialog, specify where you'd like to install Data Gateway on the
local machine and then click Next
 At the Select Remote Data Version dialog, select Remote Data Gateway
 At the Credentials dialog, specify a username and password to use for logging into the Data
Gateway Agent Configuration page
 Under Next Steps, click Start Jetty and then click Finish
We can review the details by using the following command:

/<Data Gateway install folder>/domains/bin/status.sh

Step 2:

Log into OACS and Navigate to Data Visualization. Click Console, go to Remote Data Connectivity and
turn on Enable Data Gateway

Configure Remote Data Gateway Agents once these changes are done.

RDG Configuration Utility requires browser access to the RDG host and port. If the client running the
browser is in the same network as the RDG server, there should not be any issue.

To test the availability of access, enter following URL in a browser:

http://<Your RDG host name/IP>:<Your RDG HTTP port>/obiee/javads?status

If it is successful, an XML response is returned.

Generate Data Gateway Key in the OACS.

Once it is generated, copy the key to a clipboard. Then go to the Remote Data Connectivity, paste the
generated key into the Data Gateway Public key and then click on 'OK'.

Step 3:

Creating a new DV data connection validates whether the RDG is configured correctly or not.

Login or go to the OAC home page and click on the Hamburger icon.

Go to Data and click on Connections, then provide the required fields in Create Connection, enable
Use Remote Data Connector and then save the changes.

We can now create data visualizations, data sets and projects using the remote data source.
