Nature and Background of Arnis

What is Arnis?
Arnis is regarded as a traditional Filipino Martial
Art that can be performed individually or with a
partner.

This sport shows fighting with weapons such as

knives, bladed weapons, sticks, or other
improvised weapons. It also includes grappling,
pacifying of weapons, and hand combat. The
main purpose of Arnis is for self-defense.

It is also known as Kali, an ancient malay word

which means large bladed weapon.

Even though the Spaniards used strong weapons

such as swords and guns, Lapu-Lapu and his
men used wooden instruments, spears, and
bolos. The use of these kinds of weapons did not
hinder them from winning the fight against the
Spaniards.
Thus, Magellan died during the battle between
him and Lapu-Lapu.

Lapu-Lapu was considered the first Master of

Arnis for fighting Magellan.

Remy Amador Presas

Remy Amador Presas is the father of Modern
Arnis. It is a system of Filipino fighting arts
founded by him as a self-defense system.

The term Modern Arnis was used by Remy

Presas' younger brother Ernesto Presas to
describe his style of Filipino martial arts; since
1999 Ernesto Presas has called his system
Kombatan.

On December 11, 2009, Arnis was declared as

the Philippine National Martial Art and Sport
through Republic Act 9850 signed by ex-
President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo.

And that’s the nature and backround of Arnis in

the Philippines. Do you have any questions?

If none, let’s move on to our next topic.

Equipment and Facilities in Arnis

Headgear is a necessity in arnis combat. Its
materials provide vital protection from head
strikes, while maintaining motion capability.

Arm Guards provide complementary protection

to the other arnis battle gear.

Hand Gloves protect the hand from strikes of the

opponent.

Groin Protector has padding for the lower

abdomen and a special contoured groin cup to
provide complete protection to the groin area.

Leg/Shin Guards provide complementary

protection to the other arnis battle gear.

Body Armor is designed to provide thorough

upper body protection, while allowing mobility
and protection.
The students’ answer may vary.
Padded sticks are the ideal weapon for the duelo.
The sticks are made of a tough internal
assembly, which is designed to take a series of
hard hits; foam padding to prevent deformation
from gripping; and a high-grade vinyl cover for a
comfortable and easy grip.

The baston (Spanish and Filipino for "cane") is

one of the primary weapons of Arnis and
Filipino martial arts. Also known as Yantok,
Eskrima, Pamalo or simply stick.

Now that we are done in equipment in Arnis,

Do you have any questions? If none, let’s
proceed to facilities.

Dimensions
The playing area is a square measuring 8.0
meters by 8.0 meters with a two (2) meters
minimum free zone around it, and a clear space
without any obstruction up to a height of not less
than 5 meters from the playing surface.

Lines of the Playing Area

All lines of the playing surface are 5.08 cm.

(2inches) and must be of different color from
that of the floor and other lines previously drawn
for other purposes.

Boundary Lines

Four lines mark the boundary of the playing

area. The free zone distance measuring 2.0
meters are drawn outside of the playing area.

Referee Lines

A straight line of 1.0 meter long is drawn 2.5

meters from the farthest boundary line parallel to
the official’s table.

Warning Lines

A broken straight line is drawn one (1) meter

before each boundary line to serve as a marker
before the outside zone.

Neutral Corner
The corner of the playing area farthest to the
official’s table and in between the two (2) judges
within the free zone shall be designated as the
neutral corner.

Flags

The students’ answer may vary.

Two sets of red and

blue flags, the size of
which is 30 cm by 25
cm, are used by the
judges in declaring
decisions or asking for consultations.
.
One yellow flag, size 30 cm by 25 cm. for
timer’s use to signal the start and the end of each
round and to declare a time-out and resumption
of the game.

And that’s the equipment and facilities in Arnis.

Do you have any questions or clarifications? If
none, let’s move on.
