 INTRODUCTION
The Department of Education (DepEd)
continues to work towards making all
schools child-friendly, safe and
conducive to learning. Part of this effort
is providing the appropriate facilities for
each school based on data collected and
standards set by policymakers.
 INTRODUCTION
Under many pressures the public
economy has moved slowly to supply
educational needs, one of this was the
construction of school buildings
because of the expansion or increase
in enrolment the need for more school
building was so great.
School buildings are
classified according to: DESIGN

A. According to structure:
Type Description Traditionally referred to as
I Wood construction “Semi-Permanent”
II Wood construction with protective fire- - made of a combination of materials such as
resistant materials one-hour fire-resistive concrete and 80% lumber
throughout
III Masonry and wood construction with exterior “Permanent”
walls of incombustible (fire- resistive) - made of strong and durable materials, 80% of
construction: one-hour fire resistive
which is concrete
throughout

IV Steel, iron, concrete or masonry construction

with walls, ceilings and permanent partitions of
incombustible (fire resistive) construction except
permanent non-bearing partitions which shall be
one-hour fire-resistive.

C. According to function:
1. Instructional Spaces
These spaces are designed to directly
accommodate the educational program.
2. Administrative and Service Spaces
The administrative and services spaces are
those which serve to facilitate administrative
and administration – related functions and
services such as administrative offices,
canteens, or lunch counters, medical-dental
clinics, guidance room, dormitories, etc.
3. Non-Programmed Spaces
Non-programmed spaces are those which are
not directly related to the implementation of the
educational program and administrative functions
or services such as lobbies, corridors, stairs, etc.
4. Corridors
Corridors are required at ground level if
appropriate direct access to enclosed spaces is
provided. Every corridor shall not be less than
1.10 meters wide and shall be unobstructed.
Above ground level, the minimum clear width is
2.00 meters provided that the provisions of the
National Building and Fire Codes of the
Philippines and other relevant rules and
regulations are observed.
