I. Background of the Project:

The dismal ranking of the Philippines in the latest Programme for

International Student Assessment (PISA) results of the Organization for
Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) 2018 is a call for us Filipinos,
especially us educators, to think of innovative ways to uplift our students’
academic performances. The Philippines’ very low average scores in Reading,
Science and Mathematics is really a wake-up call to initiate possible remedies to
address the weaknesses of our students, thus, giving birth to Project GLORY or
Project Genuine Love for Reading among the Youth, that is envisioned to
promote reading skills and comprehension among Filipino students and to
eradicate the number of poor and non-readers.

As we all know, reading is the basic tool in learning. One will not be able
to understand scientific or mathematical concepts unless he comprehends them.
Thus, reading must be given much focus in order to raise the bar higher for
quality Philippine education.

The Project GLORY of San Nicolas National High School upholds the
principles of the Three Acts of Goodness Campaign of Fo Guang Shan and its
founder, Venerable Master Hsing Yun, as it is anchored to instill among its
proponents and beneficiaries the acts of doing good deeds, speaking good words,
and thinking good thoughts. Project Glory falls under the grant category of
student welfare and development which shall offer regular remedial reading
classes and shall provide innovative and effective reading materials to poor and
non-readers. Indeed, Project GLORY shall be a sustainable and life-changing
project for the Filipino youth.

II. Objectives of the Project:

Project GLORY aims to:

1. identify the incoming Grade 7 students of San Nicolas National High
School for School Year 2020-2021 with poor reading skills and
comprehension;
2. conduct remedial reading classes for the identified beneficiaries with
the help of volunteer teachers;
3. publish original reading materials and modules that incorporates our
desirable Filipino values which will be used in the remedial reading
classes;
4. establish a remedial reading hub for the beneficiaries; and
5. promote sustainable and genuine love for reading among the
beneficiaries and the youth as a whole.

III. Significance and Relevance of the Project:

Project GLORY also supports the Department of Education’s 3Bs

initiative or the Bawat Bata Bumabasa initiative, and the ECARP or Every Child
a Reader Program. Though the said project will be first implemented in the local
scale, its productivity shall inspire other schools to pattern and implement their
own reading programs in the future. The domino effect shall make a huge impact
in our vision to address our problems on reading proficiency.

IV. Beneficiary of the Project:

The beneficiaries of the project will be Grade 7 students with poor reading
skills and comprehension who will be identified during the enrollment period for
school year 2020-2021.
