FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 1

CHAPTER 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

Introduction

A lot of factors influence students' expectations and experiences with university life.

To advertise the university's image, several universities launch programs or promote

features of current programs. We wanted to see if there were any connections

between first-year students' college expectations and experiences, their awareness

of the university's programming and projected image, the impact of the

programming and image on their decision to enroll, and the students' personal

characteristics (Nadelson,2013). Asking clients to forecast their interest assessment

findings is a common strategy used in career assessment to elicit their self-concepts.

Accuracy in predicting one's interest type is often regarded as an indication of

increased self-awareness and readiness to make a professional choice. Accuracy was

also linked to interest profile consistency, distinction, and alignment with career

goals (Hirschi, A., & Läge, D. 2008). When choosing a school and degree program,

several variables should be examined, including the quality of education, the people,

the location from the environment, personal preference, and school proximity to

kids' homes. Maritime students are also showing a lot of interest in the degree

program. Students who graduated from public schools in the maritime region have

a considerably higher likelihood of succeeding. When compared to individuals who

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 2

graduated from private schools, they have a substantially higher degree of interest

in the marine curriculum and are less likely to be influenced by others when picking

a school and degree program (Aguado, Laguador & Deligero, 2015).

There is a causal relationship between the variables that influence schooling and

employment choice, such as the social environment and structural factors. People's

educational choices are influenced by their social integration and their hopes for

improved education and training are held across all social levels. Because of

prevalent social beliefs, women's options in terms of the profession are limited

(Payfili & Mylonakis, 2011).

Conceptual Framework

The study aimed to determine the factors affecting the choice of school and students’

level of interest towards the Maritime Program of Jose C. Feliciano College

Foundation. This could be explained by the paradigm which is composed of the

Input-Process-Output frame to elaborate and easily understand the process of the

research using the illustration.

The input shows the demographic profile of the respondents in terms of age and sex. It also

includes the significant relationship between the selection of schools based on the quality

education, the influence of people, the personal preference of the student, the school’s

accessibility and proximity and the choice of school and students’ level of interest towards

the Maritime Program of Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation. The hypothesis states that

there’s a significant relationship between the school’s accessibility and proximity and the

choice of school and students’ level of interest in the maritime program of JCFC.

The process includes analysis of the database on their experience through an online survey

questionnaire and statistical treatment.

The output signifies factors affecting the choice of school and students’ level of interest

Importance of the Study

This study hopes to deliver a better understanding of the factors affecting the choice of

school and students’ level of interest towards the Maritime Program of JCFC. Furthermore,

it will be beneficial for the following:

To the Teachers. This study will benefit the teachers directly by providing insight into the

strengths of the Maritime Program of JCFC and its curriculum. By identifying the

weaknesses of the program, teachers may adjust their syllabi to cater to the students.

To the Students. The students will benefit from the study by gaining a wider and better

judgment of the factors that they need to consider before choosing their programs. By

identifying the common factors that others have considered for choosing Maritime,

students can determine what they prioritize when it comes to deciding on a course.

To the Parents. This study aids parents by allowing them to be aware of the factors that

students consider when choosing JCFC’s Maritime Program. This allows them to weigh

their options when looking into schools so they will entrust their children’s education for

the child’s benefit.

To the School. This study will allow JCFC to determine the factors that the students

consider in choosing their Maritime course and how it appeals to the public. The school

may optimize and improve the current Maritime program and its promotion to further

entice the students’ interest in the course.

To the Future Researchers. This study will help the future researcher to have reference

material about the factors affecting the choice of school and students’ level of interest in

the Maritime Program of JCFC. If they will also conduct research related to this topic they

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 7

can get or develop significantly better so the future reader will gain more and better

knowledge about this topic.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The study shall focus on the first-year maritime students that are enrolled in Jose C.

Feliciano College Foundation. It will be conducted with the use of an online survey. The

study consists of sixty-five (65) respondents. The participants will be given a set of

questionnaires prepared by the researchers. Afterward, the researchers come up with the

assessment procedures where information gathered was analyzed and evaluated. The

researchers aim to conduct the study within the academic year 2020-2021. This study will

be conducted with a limited number of financial resources and a time framework.

Definition of Terms

To understand the study clearly, these are some words that were defined operationally by

the researchers:

Choice – The word choice is defined as an act of selecting or making the decision when

faced with two or more possibilities. Choice suggests the opportunity or privilege of

choosing freely. The freedom of choice option implies a power to choose that is specifically

granted or guaranteed.

Level of interest – The word level of interest is defined as the concentration of a substance

or analyte in a sample that is significant to determine its compliance with the legislation.

Maritime Program – The word maritime program is defined as a professional program

that deals with the study of navigation, cargo handling, and storage, controlling the safe

operation, and care for people on board the ship at the operational level.

CHAPTER 2

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

Students in secondary school, upon graduating often, are still undecided on their path. They

either choose to further their study or enter universities and colleges. Or find a job and join

the workforce. If they choose to further their study and enter a tertiary level of education,

they are sometimes faced with the dilemma of what program to enroll in. They are planning

to enter college without a clear idea of what career to pursue for their future (Ramirez &

Dizon, 2014).

This study shows that Filipino families that have financial difficulties are more likely to

enroll their children in schools that have low tuition fees to lessen the family’s financial

burden on supporting all children's education and sustaining the education of all children

who went to school simultaneously. Guardians of these students sometimes asked their

relatives who have finished to know all the expenses and to prepare them for the future

(Rajakrishnan 2020).

As a sign of respect for the parents, embedded in the Filipino culture, parents or the elderly

are being consulted and asked first by their children before making a decision. This is

primarily because they will be the ones to provide the financial support to enter college

(Laguador, 2013).

This study shows that the students examine viable job possibilities, even if these require

them to leave the nation. The findings of this research were utilized to offer suggestions

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 10

about the relevance of marine and ocean literacy in Italy's formal educational system, as

well as the overall improvement of scientific literacy in formal schooling.

Recommendations were also given on how higher education institutions could improve to

better educate mariners with the skills necessary by developing areas of society (Jake,

2019).

This study shows that Quality education, people from the environment, personal

preference, and school accessibility from students' homes are all variables to consider when

choosing a school and degree program. Freshman Maritime students served as respondents

in this study, which used a descriptive research method. Findings revealed that students

chose to enroll in the maritime program on their own, with support primarily from their

parents, and that quality education, also evidenced by its reputation on board topnotchers

and its standards, is a major factor in their decision. They also assumed that completing

maritime education would lead to employment abroad, which is the nature of sailors' duties

and responsibilities (Carlos, Jake & Joseph, 2015).

Maritime education and training (MET) are currently facing numerous obstacles, making

it difficult to maintain a pool of educated and competent marine officers and engineers.

Because of the industry's complexity, certain grades of seafarers are waiting to be deployed,

while others are severely understaffed. MET institutes compete with other higher education

institutions while also raising the worldwide MET's overall quality standards. In addition,

the younger generation's interest in seafaring has waned, and the quality of potential

recruits has decreased. Leading MET institutes are under pressure to be more liberal in

their standards for admission (Edirisinghe & Shen 2018).

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 11

They may think about the people and information they get in their environment at times.

There are various elements that may influence students' and parents' decisions, and private

higher education institutions can use this information to provide excellent services that

meet the community's requirements, expectations, and desires. When developing an

educational program, academic institutions seek to consider the needs of customers,

prospective students, and other clients such as industrial partners (Hrnciar & Madzík,

2013).

As a result, the function of guidance counseling is critical in helping students accept and

comprehend the nature of the Maritime curriculum. Students also depend on their educators

to develop their interest (Yang, 2008) in the maritime students towards their enrolled

degree program.

This study shows that in terms of organization and strategy, International Maritime

Transport is a major shift from prior publications. In the first chapter, the section editors

each explain the state of the art before introducing a selection of works that provide a broad

overview of the subject. Individual opinion and analysis have been given literary freedom

within the general structure, allowing for a level of inventiveness that is potentially

hindered by the more conventional paradigm (Heather & James 2014).

Marine department's co-curricular activities could be focused on developing programs that

investigate the benefits and complexity of the maritime program in relation to student

outcomes and the university's basic principles. The program may also explore generating

certain learning activities that would modify and mold the students' character to become

imaginative and creative in delivering solutions to the marine profession's tough goals.

They must comprehend the intricacies and overcome the challenges in order to apply the

theories gained in the classroom to real-world situations. So that they may grasp the

abstract meaning of things and gain a better understanding of how to appreciate the marine

program's challenges (Martina, Roberto & Carlo, 2017).

CHAPTER 3

METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the procedures which follow in the conduct of the study. It includes

the method of research that used the subject of the study, the development and validation

of the instrument, the data gathering procedure, and data, which are statistically treated.

Research Design

The researchers used the sequential explanatory mixed methods design. This type

of research entails collecting and analyzing both quantitative and qualitative data relevant

to the study. According to Cresswell (2003), the mixed-method approach in research is

patterned from a philosophical point of view of pragmatism that recognizes the significance

of various lenses to conduct a study where the researchers draw substantially from both

quantitative and qualitative assumptions. Acosta and Acosta (2017) cited that the practical

use of this method of research focuses on the notion that people tend to solve problems

using numerical and non-numerical data. A qualitative phase succeeded by a quantitative

phase is the inclusions of the mixed-method design adopted in this study.

The study was designed to give details and illustrate on what are the factors affecting the

choice of school and students’ level of interest towards the maritime program of Jose C.

Feliciano College Foundation.

The study aimed to know the factors affecting the choice of school and students’ level of

interest towards the maritime program of Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation. The

researchers opted to study the details by means of giving a set of questions prepared and

designed for the respondents to easily answer the given questions. The answers that were

JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 14

gathered will elaborate on the general answers for all the students who are enrolled at JCFC

with the means of proper statistical measurements.

Locale of the Study

The study will be conducted in Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation., Dau Access Rd,

Dau, Mabalacat City Pampanga to investigate and find the factors affecting the choice of

school and students’ level of interest towards the maritime program of JCFC. This study

will be conducted during the 1st semester of the academic year 2021 – 2022. The

researchers chose Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation because the researchers want to

help the school know what are the factors that can affect the students’ choice of school and

level of interest towards the maritime program.

Figure 1. Map of Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation

Respondents of the Study

The respondents of the study are the Bachelor of Science in Marine Transportation (BSMT)

first-year students of the Jose C. Feliciano College in Pampanga. Bachelor of Science in

Marine Transportation (BSMT) first-year students are selected because of the similarities

of the program, also students who are enrolled and choose the maritime program for their

course. The researchers chose the sixty-five (65) 1st-year maritime students as the total

population.

Sample and Sampling Procedure

Using the total population sampling, is a form of purposive sampling in which researchers

study the whole population of interest (i.e., a group whose members all share a given

characteristic). The total population of sixty-five (65) 1st-year maritime students are chosen

by the researchers.

Research Instrument

The researchers devised a questionnaire as a way of collecting data and as an instrument

for the study. The questionnaire is a research instrument consisting of a series of questions

for the purpose of gathering information from respondents. The researchers made an

evaluation to assist the respondents to gather information using survey questionnaires as

the instrument to attain the objective of the study. This instrument was the key to obtaining

and providing more data. A self-administered questionnaire is given to the maritime third-

year students coming from the JCFC Maritime Department. The questionnaire was divided

into five (5) parts: the students’ profile to know their background, the selection of school

based on the quality of education, the influence of people, personal preferences, and

proximity and accessibility of school. They focused on the factors affecting the choice of

school and students’ level of interest in the maritime program. The Likert scale is used to

collect feedback without providing a fair option. This 4-Point Likert Scale allows

researchers to include four extreme options without a neutral choice. To interpret its use of

it, assign each response a point value, from 1 to 4, based on the number of responses. The

options start with "Strongly Agree" at point 4, “Agree” at 3, “Disagree” on point 2, and

"Strongly Disagree" at point 1. A table should be created to use for the results to find the

Mode (number of times something occurs) and the average response (Mean). The mode

will reveal the most common response to each statement while the mean will give the

overall average response.

Validation of the questionnaire. The researcher had finished the research instrument with

rubrics and submitted it to their research adviser to review and critique the questionnaire.

Data Collection

Using the total population sampling, is a form of purposive sampling in which researchers

study the whole population of interest (i.e., a group whose members all share a given

characteristic). The total population of sixty-five (65) 1st-year maritime students are chosen

by the researchers. The researchers will gather the data with the use of a survey by means

of an online questionnaire, the researcher asked the maritime students to conduct a survey.

The respondents are the maritime students of Jose C. Feliciano College Foundation in Dau,

Mabalacat, Pampanga. They will answer the questions provided by the researcher through

an online survey. These questionnaires are designed to gather data about the researcher’s

objectives.

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 17

After the respondents had finished the survey, the result was tallied to determine the factors

affecting the choice of school and students’ level of interest in the maritime program of

JCFC Pampanga.

The scale below was used to interpret the responses of the respondents for every survey

question by computing the weighted mean.

Weight Range Verbal Interpretation (VI)

4 3.50 - 4.00 Strongly Agree (SA)

3 2.50 - 3.49 Agree (A)

2 1.50 - 2.49 Disagree (D)
1 1.00 - 1.49 Strongly Disagree (SD)

Statistical Treatment of Data (ano gagamitin para malaman significant relationship)

The researcher will employ the following statistical treatment to interpret the data

effectively. The Percentage and Weighted Mean are the tools used to interpret data.

Frequency and percentage distribution. This will be used to determine the frequency

counts and percentage distribution of personal related variables of the respondents. A

percentage frequency distribution is a display of data that specifies the percentage of

observations that exist for each data point or grouping of data points. It is a particularly

useful method of expressing the relative frequency of survey responses and other data.

Many times, percentage frequency distributions are displayed as tables as bar graphs or pie

charts. The process of creating a percentage frequency distribution involves first

identifying the total number of observations to be represented; then counting the total

number of observations within each data point or grouping of data points, and then dividing

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 18

the number of observations within each data point or grouping of data points by the total

number of observations. A frequency distribution shows the organization of the data by

the magnitude and numerical value of observation. On the other hand, Percentage

Distribution can be acquired by dividing the frequency of different values by a total number

of variables and then multiplying the quotient by 100. The following formula illustrates

the computation for percentage.

f where: P = percentage

P= N X 100
f = frequency

N = number of respondents

Weighted mean. This was used to determine the final weight of the scaled item.

The weighted mean involves multiplying each data point in a set by a value which is

determined by some characteristic of whatever contributed to the data point. An example

should help make that rather vague definition clearer.

Σfx where: WAM = Weighted Mean

Σ = the sum of (in other
WAM = Σf X 100 words…add them up!).
f = frequency.
x = the value/ numerical

FACTORS AFFECTING THE CHOICE OF SCHOOL AND STUDENTS’ LEVEL OF INTEREST IN MARITIME PROGRAM
JOSE C. FELICIANO COLLEGE FOUNDATION 28

All of the student and university successes can be spread indefinitely through various media

such as newspapers, television and radio advertising, tarpaulin printing and billboards, and

the use of social networking platforms. Alumni accomplishments may also be announced

in appropriate venues and on appropriate occasions to recognize their contributions to the

community. They were living examples of what JCFC had sown for personal and

professional development.

The college’s quality assurance systems, such as program accreditations, CHED permits,

and ISO certification, can be communicated in a language that parents and students

understand. These endeavors and accomplishments may be understood by students as well

as regular people. The JCFC staff and faculty may convene a general meeting of all marine

freshmen to discuss everything about the nature of the program of study and as a career in

order to motivate them to reach their full potential.

Helping the students understand their roles and responsibilities will keep them informed

about what to anticipate from the program and how to meet the program's educational goals

as part of the Outcomes-Based Education implementation. It would also help to increase

students' interest in the program, if they were given enough time during class discussions

to see the outside world of the profession through video presentations, actual scenarios of

simulations, and problem-solving methods. They would be more responsive to specifics on

every part of the maritime curriculum, and their motivation and attitude to stay updated

and educated about the industry would be sparked.

This study was limited to students enrolled in Maritime programs, but it might be expanded

to include other degree programs to confirm the findings. Other variables, such as the

school's marketing tools and methods, may be incorporated in future studies to assess its

efficacy and efficiency in meeting the school's enrollment goals. The strength of the

school's image may also be deemed crucial to analyze as a significant aspect that may

impact the school choice.
