India promises International community to protect 30% of land

and water
• India is considering a formal pledge to the

latest climate and biodiversity protection
commitment – ‘30by30’ - ahead of the United
Nations Biodiversity Commission meetings
scheduled to be held in Kunming, China in
October.
• The ‘30by30’ aspiration aims to conserve

30% land and ocean waters by 2030.
• The G7 ‘nature compact’ – inked in June,

calls on nations to protect and conserve the
same percentage of their national land, inland waters and coastal and marine areas by 2030.
• Dr. Jitendra Singh, made the remarks on behalf of the country at the UN Ocean Conference in Lisbon,
that all efforts are being made to achieve the 30×30 target in a mission mode as per the COP
resolutions.

standards for fortified rice kernels
• Standards for fortified rice kernels will be

operationalised with immediate effect, in order
to strengthen national-level fortification
programme in India.
• FRKs are rice-shaped kernels, comprising

of vitamins and minerals produced through
extrusion technique.
• The standards provide for permissible levels of folic acid, iron, and Vitamin B12 for blending ratios of 1:50
and 1:100.
• New regulation also provide for permissible levels of other fortificants like Vitamin A, zinc and Vitamins

lives of tribal youth through the digital
mentorship programme.

Karnataka launched

Laser-Guided ATG Missile successfully tested by DRDO & Indian Army
• Indigenously-developed Laser-Guided
Anti-Tank Guided Missile was successfully test-
fired from Main Battle Tank Arjun by Defence
Research and Development Organisation and
Indian Army at KK Ranges near Ahmednagar,
Maharashtra.
• This test was supported by the

Armoured Corps Centre & School Ahmednagar.
• It has been developed by two Pune

(Maharashtra) based facilities of the DRDO’s
Armament and Combat Engineering (ACE) Cluster viz. Armament Research and Development
Establishment (ARDE) and High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL); in association with
Instruments Research and Development Establishment (IRDE), Dehradun (Uttarakhand).
• It uses tandem High Explosive Anti-Tank (HEAT) warhead to defeat Explosive Reactive Armour (ERA)
protected armoured vehicles in ranges from 1.5 to 5 kilometre.
• MBT Arjun is a multi-laboratory programme of DRDO with Combat Vehicles Research & Development
Establishment (CVRDE) as the lead Laboratory.
• The term tandem means missiles using more than one detonation to effectively penetrate the protective
armours of the adversary tanks.

835 Squadron indigenous advanced light
helicopter (ALH) DHRUV MK-III aircraft
at Porbandar port, Gujarat.
• The ALH MK III helicopters have been

indigenously manufactured by Hindustan
Aeronautics Limited with a state-of-the-
art equipment including advanced
RADAR, Electro optical sensors, Shakti
engines, full glass cockpit, high-intensity
searchlight, advanced communication systems, automatic identification system and SAR homer.
• Until now, 13 ALH MK-III aircraft have been inducted in the ICG in a phased manner and 4 are at
Porbandar, Gujarat.

UK Govt. announces 75 scholarships for Indian students

• The UK government has partnered with
businesses in India to offer 75 fully funded
scholarships for Indian students to study in
Britain from September to mark the country’s
75th year of Independence.
• This is the highest number of fully

funded scholarships given by the UK for the
one-year master’s programme to date.
• HSBC, Pearson India, Hindustan

Unilever, Tata Sons and Duolingo are among
the businesses supporting this special initiative.
• The programmes on offer include Chevening scholarships for a one-year master’s programme, with the
opportunity to study any subject at any recognised British university.
• The British Council in India is offering 18 scholarships for women in science, technology, engineering and
mathematics (STEM) – covering more than 12,000 courses across more than 150 UK universities since
1983.
• India’s Chevening programme is the largest in the world with over 3,500 alumni.
• The British Council is also offering six English scholarships.
• HSBC India will sponsor 15 scholarships, Pearson India will sponsor two and Hindustan Unilever, Tata Sons
and Duolingo will sponsor one each as part of the 75 scholarships.

mechanism in India's Tier III cities and

digitize last-mile cash collections by
utilizing the broad reach of its digital-led
neighbourhoods banking concept.
• Agents no longer need to travel back and

forth to collect and deposit EMIs because they can now deposit the money at any Airtel Payments Bank

Central bank of China inked agreement with Bank for International

Settlements, for establishing a RMBLA
• The Bank for International Settlements

announced a Renminbi Liquidity Arrangement
which has been developed with the People's
Bank of China to provide liquidity to central
banks through a new reserve pooling scheme.
• The RMBLA aims to provide liquidity

support and can be utilised by participating
central banks during future periods of market
volatility.
• Each participating central bank

contributes a minimum of RMB 15 billion or US dollar equivalent, in RMB or USD, placed with the BIS,
creating a reserve pool.
• The arrangement initially includes a group of central banks in Asia and the Pacific, including Bank

Credit Card Issuances and Spends has reached all time high in
May 2022
• According to the Reserve Bank of India

data, Credit card spends has reached
an all-time high of Rs 1.14 trillion in
May 2022, 7.8 % higher than the Rs.
1.05 lakh crore spent in April 2022.
• Credit card spending increased by 118

percent year over year and by 8%
month over month, due to robust e-
commerce spending, high-value
expenditure on travel, tourism, and
discretionary items.
• Additionally, 1.7 million new credit cards were added to the banking system in May 2022, the most in

• With the additions made in May 2022, India’s overall card base has increased to 76.9 million,
demonstrating that the retail economy remains strong.
• According to Motilal Oswal, a financial services firm, there were 7.68 crore outstanding credit cards in
May 2022, up from 7.51 crore in April 2022. On a YoY basis, this was an increase of 23.3 % from the
6.23 crore credit cards used in May 2021.
• May 2022 saw the addition of 38,500 new cards from Housing Development Finance Corporation Limited
(HDFC) Bank, followed by 21,500 from Axis Bank, 21,200 from ICICI Bank, and 21,500 from SBI Card
(20,200).
• In May 2022, the HDFC Bank, the second-largest lender in India, held the highest number of credit cards
(1.72 crore), following the RBI’s lifting of the ban on the issuance of new credit cards in March 2022.
• At the end of May 2022, HDFC Bank was followed by the State Bank of India (SBI) (1.41 crore) and ICICI
Bank (1.33 crore).
• The biggest incremental growth in credit card spending was recorded by IndusInd Bank and Kotak
Mahindra Bank, at 17% and 15%, respectively. All other players experienced growth in the 4–9% range.
• American Express, on the other hand, experienced a 2% month-over-month fall.

eliminate the need to set up new accounts for this purpose.
• EasyTransfer and Cashfree Payments have streamlined India’s Liberalised Remittance Scheme declaration
process. This allows payments to be completed fully online.
• The EasyTransfer payments platform fully customised for Indian international students and their families
will be launched by early June.
