CRD and Post Hoc Test (Practice Exercises 1 and 2)
DIEZ, DAWN ILISH NICOLE L. 2 BSN B

1. Three varieties of cowpeas were grown in pots arranged in a completely randomized design. The dry
matter yields are given in the table below. Perform the analysis of variance, and test the hypothesis at
the 0.05 level of significance that the mean dry matter is the same for all three varieties.
REPLICATION Variety
A B C
I 2 3 8 7 11 12
II 4 3 7 6 10 10
III 3 4 9 8 12 12
Total 9 10 24 21 33 34 131
Mean 3 3.33 8 7 11 11.33 7.278

Solution:
1. 𝐻𝑜 : 𝜇1 = 𝜇2 = 𝜇3 = 𝜇4 = 𝜇5 = 𝜇6

𝐻1 : 𝑎𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙.

2. At 𝛼 = 0.05, do an F-test.
3. Test statistics 𝐹𝑐 : (MSTr/MSE)
4. Decision Rule/Critical region: Reject 𝐻𝑜 if 𝐹𝑐 >3.68. Otherwise, do not reject 𝐻𝑜 .
5. Computation:
(131)2
SST = 22 + 42 + ⋯ + 122 − = 1,159 − 953.389 = 205. 6111
18

192 +452 +672 (131)2

SSTr = − = 1,145.833 − 953.389 = 192.4444
6 18

SSE = 205.6111 − 192.4444 = 13.1667

These results and the remaining computations are exhibited in Table 2.

Table 2: ANOVA for the Data for Table 1

Source of Sum of Degrees of Mean Square 𝐹𝑐
Variation Squares Freedom
192.4444 96.2222
Treatment 192.4444 3−1= 2 MSTr= 2 = 96.2222 = 109.62025
0.8778
13.1667
Error 13.1667 3(6 − 1) = 15 MSE= = 0.8778
15
Total 205.6111 (6 × 3) − 1 = 17

6. Decision: Since 𝐹𝑐 = 109.62025 > 𝐹0.05 (2,15) = 3.68, 𝑤𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑗𝑒𝑐𝑡 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑛𝑢𝑙𝑙 𝑝𝑦ℎ𝑜𝑡ℎ𝑒𝑠𝑖𝑠.
7. Conclusion: Therefore, the mean dry matter is not the same for all three treatments.
2. A food technology researcher wants to compare the TSS value of the three flavored juices arranged in
a completely randomized design. The TSS value are given in the table below. Perform the analysis of
variance, and test the hypothesis at the 0.05 level of significance that the mean TSS is the same for all
three treatments.
REPLICATION Treatment
1 2 3
I 5.0 5.2 5.0 5.4 5.2 5.1
II 7.2 7.0 7.6 7.2 7.6 7.5
III 7.2 6.7 7.0 7.0 7.0 7.4
Total 19.4 18.9 19.6 19.6 19.8 20.0 117.3
Mean 6.47 6.3 6.53 6.53 6.6 6.67 6.517

Solution:

1. 𝐻𝑜 : 𝜇1 = 𝜇2 = 𝜇3 = 𝜇4 = 𝜇5 = 𝜇6

𝐻1 : 𝑎𝑡 𝑙𝑒𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝑡𝑤𝑜 𝑜𝑓 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑚𝑒𝑎𝑛𝑠 𝑎𝑟𝑒 𝑛𝑜𝑡 𝑒𝑞𝑢𝑎𝑙.

2. At 𝛼 = 0.05, do an F-test.
3. Test statistics 𝐹𝑐 : (MSTr/MSE)
4. Decision Rule/Critical region: Reject 𝐻𝑜 if 𝐹𝑐 >3.68. Otherwise, do not reject 𝐻𝑜 .
5. Computations:
(117.3)2
SST = 5.02 + 7.22 + ⋯ + 7.42 − = 782.19 − 764.405 = 17.785
18
38.32 +39.22 +39.82 (117.3)2
SSTr = − = 764.595 − 764.405 = 0.19
6 18
SSE = 17.785 − 0.19 = 17.595
These results and the remaining computations are exhibited in Table 2.
Table 2: ANOVA for the Data for Table 1
Source of Sum of Degrees of Mean Square 𝐹𝑐
Variation Squares Freedom
Treatment 0.19 3−1 =2 0.19
MSTr= 2 = 0.095 0.095
= 0.08099
1.173
Error 17.595 3(6 − 1) = 15 17.595
MSE= = 1.173
15
Total 17.785 (6 × 3) − 1 = 17

6. Decision: Since 𝐹𝑐 = 0.08099 < 𝐹0.05(2,15) = 3.68, we fail to reject the null hypothesis.
7. Conclusion: Therefore, the mean TSS is the same for all the treatments.
