INTRODUCTION
In our day to day lives, we go to markets to shop for our daily necessities. The
goods or products that we find, satisfy us when consuming them. But
sometimes, we find those which aren’t in good quality and are in high prices
with hidden information. This happens because as normal citizens of the
country, we aren’t aware of our consumer rights.
The objective is to avoid people from getting exploited and be aware of
consumer rights.
WHO IS A CONSUMER?
According to the Consumer Protection Act, a consumer is
any person who buys goods or services in exchange for
consideration and utilizes such goods and services for
personal use and for the purpose of resale or commercial
use.
CONSUMER EXPLOITATION
Consumer exploitation is a situation where a consumer is cheated and
given false information by the producer or by charging more price for
a commodity or a service.
Large companies with wealth, power and reach can manipulate the
market in various ways.
Sometimes they provide false information through the media and other
sources to attract consumers.
Illiterate consumers are more vulnerable and are likely to be cheated
with. Producers and shopkeepers take advantage of any buyer who
doesn’t pay attention to prices and details.
CONSUMER RIGHTS
1. RIGHT TO SAFETY
Means right to be protected against the marketing of
goods and services, which are hazardous to life and
property. The purchased goods and services availed of
should not only meet their immediate needs, but also
fulfil long term interests.
Consumer should insist on getting all the information about the product
or service before making a choice or a decision. This will enable him to
act wisely and responsibly and also enable him to desist from falling
prey to high pressure selling techniques.
