Personal injury or death can result from escaping fluid under pressure.
Escaping fluid under pressure, even a very small pin-hole size leak, can
penetrate body tissue and cause serious injury and possible death. If
fluid is injected into your skin, it must be treated immediately by a
doctor familiar with this type of injury.

Connect the steering frame lock link between the front and rear frames
before working on machine.
NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.
Note: Use the information in the reference to prepare the machine for this test. Also, use the
information in the reference to relieve any hydraulic pressure that may be in the steering system.
Reference: For the correct procedure to relieve any hydraulic oil pressure that may be in the steering
system, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, RENR2109, "966G Wheel
Loader and 972G Wheel Loader Steering System", "Machine Preparation for Troubleshooting".

3. Engage the parking brake. Move the transmission direction selector to the NEUTRAL
position.

(2) Pressure tap for left pilot pressure. (3) Pressure tap for right pilot pressure.
4. Attach a 0 to 4000 kPa (0 to 580 psi) pressure gauge to pressure tap (2). Pressure tap (2) is
located on the right side of the machine and to the right of the steering control valve. Pressure
tap (2) is pilot pressure for left steering.
5. Start the engine. Operate the engine at high idle. Move the tilt control lever to the TILT BACK
position in order to increase the temperature of the oil to normal operating temperature. The oil
is at normal operating temperature when the hydraulic oil temperature indicator is between the
first mark and the second mark.
6. After the oil has reached normal operating temperature, position the bucket and any
attachments slightly off the ground. Run the engine at low idle.
Note: During the following step, do not keep the steering pump at stall condition for more
than ten seconds. If necessary, release the steering wheel and wait for 30 seconds before you
repeat the step.
7. In order to obtain a reliable pressure reading, turn the steering wheel counterclockwise to the
FULLY TURNED position.
10. Stop the engine. Lower the bucket and any attachments to the ground.
11. Relieve the hydraulic oil pressure. Use the reference at the beginning of this procedure to
relieve any hydraulic oil pressure.

13. Install the pressure gauge to pressure tap (3). Pressure tap (3) is located on the right side of the
machine to the right of the steering control valve. Pressure tap (3) is also to the right of the
pressure tap for checking left pilot pressure.
Note: During the following step, do not keep the steering pump at stall condition for more
than ten seconds. If necessary, release the steering wheel and wait for 30 seconds before you
repeat the step.
15. In order to obtain a reliable pressure reading, turn the steering wheel clockwise to the FULLY
TURNED position.
17. Run the engine at high idle. Repeat Steps 15 and 16.
18. The recorded pressures should not be below1600 kPa (230 psi) nor above 1875 kPa (272 psi).
19. Stop the engine. Lower the bucket and any attachments to the ground.
20. Relieve the hydraulic oil pressure. Use the reference at the beginning of this procedure to
relieve any hydraulic oil pressure.
22. If the recorded pressures are not with in the specified range use the following reference to
check the pilot valve supply pressure and the neutral pilot pressure.
Reference: For the correct procedure to check the pilot valve supply pressure and the neutral
pilot pressure, refer to the Service Manual module for Testing and Adjusting, RENR2109,
"966G Wheel Loader and 972G Wheel Loader Steering System", "Pilot Valve (Steering)
Supply Pressure - Test and Adjust".
