In this unit, we will learn about another national award for artists who engage disciplinal areas, such
as the visual arts. We might encounter some of the artists we have cited previously. In this lesson,
we look at their works more closely, especially in terms of collaboration and exchange, as we view
the National Artist Award in the spirit of the public sphere, to whom artists and award-giving bodies
are held accountable.

At the end of this unit, you should be able to:


• Identify Filipino artists and their contributions to contemporary arts.
• Explain National Artists Award responsibilities.
• Evaluate contemporary art forms based on the elements and principles used by artists.

Internationally, Filipinos are recognized as multi-
talented artists or individual, not just in the
entertainment industry. Several masterpieces of
Filipinos are even on par to international standards,
an example of that is Juan Luna’s Spolarium which
recreates a scene for a roman circus (coliseum)
where dead bodies of a gladiator are being disposed
after a fight. Sadly, this masterpiece of Juan Luna
was internationally recognized in the 1800s. Today
Filipinos are bound to gravitate towards modern
artistry where every aspect of creativity is done thru
the help of 21st century technology and it is
sometimes not authentic, the National Artist Awards
serves as an institution for recognition of today’s
generation of what is authentic artistry that comes
from innate expressions that gives significant
meaning from each creator and to its audience.

Module Topic: Lesson 2 – Traditions and Collaborative Works of National Artists
What will you learn on the
next few days?
While artists may create work independently, artistic collaborations help develop projects
involving elaborate production work. In this lesson, you will learn how different NAA recipients
work with other artists to collaborate and integrate their crafts into a single artwork. Here, we
will investigate the question: how have NAA recipients contributed to the art scene as a
whole?

At the end of this lesson, you should be able to:


• Relate the collaborative works of NAA recipients to today’s contemporary practices
• Recognize the role of the NAA to the Philippine art scene
• Conclude what will society benefit from these traditions and collaborations of national
artists

Activity 2: Ang Panday!
This time you will be a “Panday ng Sining”

Lesson 2 pages 8 – 9.

After reading, go to your to-do list in Quipper Learn,


complete the following quiz about the lesson.

Now, let us do the Ang Panday! Are you familiar with FPJ’s
“Ang Pangday” (blacksmith)? FPJ or Ronald Allan Kelley Poe is
a NAA recipient for Film. He is one of the Philippines most
iconic actors that originally portrayed a fictional character as
Flavio Batungbakal ang panday. A blacksmith can forge any
metal or iron that can be used as daily tools. Next, open our
google classroom, read the instructions, and complete the
Unit 4 Lesson 2 worksheet 2.
