7/2/2022 Poisson’s ratio

Does matter in Design?

Structural Engineer Hanna Fawzy

1

The Egyptian Code of practice ECP203/2020 identifies the

Poisson’s ratio as following

V=0.2 for non-cracked section

V=0.0 for cracked section
Therefore the question does Poisson’s ratio effect analysis result, to answer
this question need to model a simple structure to find out the effect.

Example
As per ECP recommendation will assume the following

1- All columns material It’s Poisson’s ratio =0.2 for both models.
2- One of both models assigned Poisson’s ratio =0.0 for beams and slabs and the other keep Poisson’s
ratio =0.2 for all elements

Conclusion

Poisson’s ratio =0.2 Poisson’s ratio=0.0 Difference ratio

Shell results Deflection 7.68 8.153 1.06
M1-1 17.456 14.84 0.85
M2-2 20.8 18.3 0.88
M1-2 2.22 3.56 1.6
Beams Short direction BM 59.66 64.06 1.073
Long direction BM 104.13 106.95 1.027
Column M2-2 20.75 21.52 1.037
M3-3 8.81 9.62 1.092

Using Poisson’s ratio =0.0 exceeding deflection up to 6% and decreasing shell BM M1-1 and M1-2 about
15% also exceeding M1-2 up to 60 %

Regarding frame element exceeding the BM for beams 2.7 to 7.3 % and for columns from 3.7 to 9.2 %
