“Juxtaposition”

2. Assignment Overview

Juxtaposition can be defined as placing two variable, side by side and their contrast or
similarity are shown through comparison. Many creative processes rely on juxtaposition. By
juxtaposing colors and objects or words next to each other, human brain will automatically
associate or transfer meaning. Usually ‘turning’ something familiar to something less
familiar or vice-versa.

This exercise focuses at generating new ideas by using juxtaposition technique.

3. Objectives of the assignment


 To provide students with basic understanding of juxtaposition as an idea generation
tool in creative thinking.
 To develop students creative thinking skills

4. Requirements/ Brief

 In this assignment, students need to generate new objects/ideas using


juxtaposition technique.
 Students are required to find any word/picture of an object (natural or manmade)
such as ‘butterfly’, ‘strawberry’, ‘keyboard’, ‘football’ etc, and then create one (1)
new object/idea that has value.
 Students will have to illustrate ‘new image’ of the idea on paper using cut and paste
technique of photos from magazine or printed pictures.
 Students are expected to write at least a page of creative rationale to describe their
new idea/creation.
 Students are expected to present their ideas individually (3 minutes per student)

5. Expected Outcome

• Juxtaposed artwork
• Size: A3
• Creative Rationale (Typed on A4)
• Materials: Cut and paste magazine photos or printed, Marker, Water color
or any other.

6. Assessment Criteria

This assignment carries 100 marks and contributes 30% to the total mark of this module.
The following table breaks down the specific marking Criteria to be used for this particular
assignment.

Rationale.
