INSTRUCTIONS FOR WHERE TO MEASURE

TEMPERATURESS IN A GYROCOMPACT - PROCEDURE 005

The picture below shows an example from a GC M7/2 where to measure

temperatures.
Generally it should be said that it is essential that the end of the thermo
couple doesn’t have contact with any other metal in the freezer. This will add
a third metal to the system and a fault reading will follow as a result.

Freezers with the fans placed after the evaporator in the airflow:

Picture 1.) Placing thermocouples in a GC M –type of freezer.

# 1.) Air temperature off last tier in the stack : The temperature on the air
discharged from the last tier in the stack can vary a lot over the belt width as
well as around the stack. Therefore, it can be necessary to place a number of
reading points, thermocouples, both on inner and outer side under the belt, in
combination with reading points at the near and far side of the stack, seen
from the evaporator unit. The thermocouples should be placed as close as
possible under the bottom tier for down flow air and as close as possible over
the top tier for up flow air, in order to be sure of measuring the air temperature
of the air discharged from the last tier in the stack. If the sensors are placed
too far away from the last tier, there is a risk that we will measure a mix of air
coming from other places in the freezer.

# 2.) Air temperature in to evaporator : The air, entering into the

evaporator, is a mix of air which have passed or bypassed the belt stack in
different ways. For that reason we need to measure the average air
temperature going in to the evaporator. Place a minimum of two
thermocouples close to the evaporator front, where the air is entering the
evaporator.
If an ADF is installed you have to be carefully, to avoid that moving parts on
the ADF risk to catch on the thermocouple wire.
# 3.) Air temperature off evaporator : Measuring the air temperature after
the evaporator is much easier, as we expect the air temperature of the air
coming off the evaporator normally has a much more even temperature. If we
don’t expect any uneven refrigerant feed in to the different evaporators, then
we can limit the number of thermocouples (reading points) to only one.
However, if we have reasons to believe or know that there is an uneven
refrigerant feed to the evaporators, then we should put one thermocouple
after each evaporator, just as we put one thermocouple on each suction
header, see under # 4.)
Another reason for placing more than one thermocouple after the evaporator,
is when we feel that the space before and/or after the evaporator is so limited
that we need to map out any tendency for a significant uneven air distribution
through the evaporator and thereby uneven heat load in different sections of
the evaporator.
# 4.) Evaporation temperature : Place one thermocouple on the suction
header for each evaporator, in order to check the evaporation temperature on
each evaporator. If one evaporator has a different suction temperature, we
also need to measure the air temperature coming off this evaporator, as
described under # 3.)
Before placing the thermocouple to the suction header, the thermocouple end
must be electrically isolated, for reasons explained in the beginning of this
document. Place the, electrically isolated, thermocouple tight on to the suction
header surface with tape in between 4 and 5 o’clock position and insulate with
at least 15 mm insulation, e.g. self adhesive Armaflex.
# 5.) Air temperature after fans : Place one thermocouple after the fans, in
the airflow, e.g. on the guard around the fan wheel.

Freezers with the fans placed before the evaporator in the airflow:

Picture 2.) Placing thermocouples in a GCM –type of freezer.

# 1.) Air temperature off last tier in the stack : See description on page 1.

# 2.) Air temperature in to evaporator : See description on page 2, but as

the fans in this freezer have effectively mixed the air in this freezer we can
allow us to use only one thermocouple in this position.
# 3.) Air temperature in to fans : In the freezer with the fans after the eva-
porator, this reading point measures the air temperature after the evaporator
and before the fans. In this freezer the reading point measures the air tem-
perature after the stack and before the fans.
Use the fan guards to hold the 2 thermocouples, one in each fan.
# 4.) Evaporation temperature : See page 3.
# 5.) Air temperature after the evaporator : In the freezer with the fans after
the evaporator, this reading point measures the air temperature after the fans.
In this freezer the reading point measures the air temperature after the
evaporator and before the stack. Use the stand or hand rail around the stack
hold the thermocouple.
