Transfer technique is a process of shifting the person with

limited function from one location to another .Patient’s

ability to transfer and the amount of assist needed will
depend on cardiopulmonary status, joint flexibility, muscle
tone and strength, neuromuscular control, balance and
coordination, endurance, weight bearing status and
cognition. Goal of transfer training is generalizability

Independent transfer

The patient consistently performs

all aspects of the transfer
including setup, in a safe the
transfer, , in a safe manner
and without assistance
Assisted transfer
Patient actively participates in transfer but
requires assistances
Types of assisted transfers
Twoperson lift
This type of transfer requires
Two person to lifting patient
To wheel chair
Sliding board transfer
This type of transfer patient need
Sliding board .they slide board is
Place between the bed and wheelchair
Patient slide over the board and reach
The wheel chair

Pivot Transfer
PREPARATION

2.Park the wheelchair next to bed, close to the patient
put the brakes on and move the footrests out of the way.

3.Getting a patient ready to transfer

Roll the patient onto the same side of the wheelchair.Therapist

approach to the patient must be as close as possible and bend the
knees ready to shift the patient.

Put one of the therapist arms under the patients shoulders and one
behind the knees.

Swing the patients feet off the edge of the bed and use the momentum
to help the patient into a seated position, make sure that patient feet is
touching the ground

PIVOT TURN
Place the patients outside leg(the one farthest from the
wheelchair)between Therapist knee for support.Make sure that
Therapist bend the knees and keep back straight

Count to three and slowly stand up. Therapist creates an upward thrust
to lift the patient

At the same time, the patient should place their hands by their sides
and try to propel the body by putting the pressure at the side of the
bed

The patient should support their weight on their good leg during the
transfer.

Pivot towards the wheelchair by moving Therapist feet so your back is

aligned with your hips

Once the patients legs are touching the seat of the wheelchair, bend the
therapist knee to lower the patient into the seat .At the same time
ask patient to reach for the wheelchair armrest

If the patient starts to fall during the transfer, lower the person to the
nearest flat bed,chair or floor

Dependent transfer

Patient does not or cannot actively participate in transfer. May be

able to assist minimally.
