What I Need to Know

This module was designed for Advanced Elementary ALS Learners. This will
help the learners learn the skills in reading comprehension such as noting details,
identifying the main idea and supporting details as well as the cause and effect
relationship. The learners will also be exposed to different text types according to
purpose. All of these are the least mastered skills in English.

The module is composed of one lesson divided into four topics namely:

What I Know

Filipino Strong Family Ties


Filipinos treasure their own family above all
things in life. We see to it that our family is well
provided for and is in good physical, mental and
financial status all the time. When a family member
encounters a problem the other members sit together
and help solve the problem.
When children of a couple marry, the parents
see to it that newlyweds are supported. If the
newlyweds cannot afford to live on their own; then
the parents ask the couple to live with them. During
the time of old age, the children of Filipino parents
take good care of their them and see to it that they are well-provided for. This one
Filipino value that we treasure the most.
However, the demand for modern time affected the values of the Filipino
family at present. Same with the world, it also evolved. The newlyweds who live in
the same roof with the parents experience problems of privacy, financial incapacity,
and even the decision-making skills of the couple. It resulted in chaos among
family members. There are also times that old aged parents are neglected when
children have a family of their own. Nevertheless, the strong family ties of Filipinos
still exist no matter how the time evolved.

The reading selections are created by the writer. Its main goal is
to expose the learners to different text types as they try to note
details and identify cause and effect relationship, main idea/key
concepts of the selection and its supporting details. However, the
text types in this module is limited to four types. The teacher-
user of this module may discuss the other text types to the
learners. The selections for the activities are easy compared to
the pre-test and post-test. The writer intends to gradually expose
the learners in reading selections from easy to develop the skills,
then to a more complex in the post test to measure their
learnings.

A Happy Woman
Ana has a lot of hobbies and interests. She is
very organized especially on the things she does. She usually
gets up early during weekends so she can clean the house and
finish other household chores. After doing all her household
chores, she walks and jogs on the park near to her place. It’s the
reason why she maintains her good health and posture. In the
afternoon she cooks her lunch. Cooking is her passion and she
always sees to it that she does it on weekends. She doesn't often
have time to watch a movie, but she occasionally goes on
Saturdays during her off at work. Ana loves music. She always
goes to choir practice on Saturday evenings and sings in church
on Sundays. She seldom watches TV because she likes doing
things outside. She usually goes to the gym if it's raining outside
on Sundays after attending mass. On weekdays she gets up
early too to prepare for work. She enjoys all her chores in spite of her busy
schedule at work. Even how busy she is she's a happy woman!

Resilient Filipinos
Filipino resiliency and “bayanihan” spirit
were once tested on the recent Taal volcanic
eruption. The unwavering support of fellow
Filipinos to all the victims made the tough
situation easy for them.
Taal Volcano is the second most active
volcano in the Philippines, with 33 recorded
historical eruptions since 1572, all of which were concentrated on Volcano Island,
near the middle of Taal Lake. There have been 33 recorded eruptions at Taal since
1572. Taal remained quiet for 54 years except for a minor eruption in 1790.
Suddenly, residents of Batangas and Tagaytay were surprised at its sudden
eruption last January 12, 2020. The PHIVOLCS raised its alarm to level 4. Classes
in Metro Manila were affected due to the ashes coming from the eruption.
The sudden eruption of Taal destroyed the lives and properties especially
those near the place. Force evacuation was done. Some cities and municipalities
were locked down to avoid danger. Evacuees trooped to nearby cities in Batangas.
Lately, the alarm level was reduced to level 3 and evacuees were once again
permitted to go back to their respective homes.

Lost in the Woods


One Sunday morning, Gina and her
brother, James, walked to their Grandparent’
house. On the way, they stopped in the woods to
picked mangoes and ate them as they walked.
While crossing the woods, James picked aratiles for
Grandpa and Grandma. They were able to pass by
the house of Grandpa’s neighbor. Gina waved hello
to Mr. Santos and helped him picked some avocado
felt on the ground. Finally, Gina and James arrived
at their Grandparents’ house. They came out and
gave them both a big hug and a stick of camote cue
they prepared.
After eating their lunch, they picked some
guava on grandfather’s farm so they could bring something for mother and father.
They also roam around the farm to see the different animals their grandpa taking
care of. It was late in the afternoon when they bid goodbye to grandpa and started
walking back home. In the middle of the woods, they were lost. They forgot the way
to their home. Suddenly, Carl remembered the mango peelings he had thrown
earlier. They followed the trail of mango peelings scattered along the woods leading
to their home. Before sunset, they were able to reach home and ate their dinner.

communicating with the reader. It is the heart of the text.
4. Supporting Details provide information that supports the main idea or topic
sentence.

Getting It Right
Rapid population growth (RPG) is a serious problem. To address this
problem, the Philippine government created the Commission otherwise known as
POPCOM or The Commission on Population and Development. Its goal is to reduce
the current high population growth rate to help families maintain certain ideal
standards of living.
However, the population of the country continuously soars high due to
the problem in the increase of teenage pregnancy around the country. POPCOM
recently reinforced this fact that point to moral decadence as the reason for the rise
in the numbers of girls who gave birth, particularly those as young as 10 years old.
The sudden increase of teenage pregnancy is also attributed to the lack of
guidance of parents to their teenage children. Proper sex education is also an issue
in high school. Moreover, the easy access of teenagers to social media and
exposure to sexually explicit content on the internet.
To address this alarming problem, the government created policy and
program interventions that will address the issue. Religious organizations can also
help through morals and values formation to influence the decision making of
adolescents. In general, this requires interagency and multi-sectoral collaboration
to get things right.
