Different people in a community. Poor/Wealthy, weak/strong.

All need to learn that in my condition,

what does Allah want from me? Do what Allah wants and we will get close to Allah. When this happens,
when we become the friend of Allah

If we study the galaxy of Sahabah,  we will find the same diversity. Every person will find someone that
he can relate to.

Abdur-Rahman bin Auf R.A

Name was ‫ عبد عمرو‬or ‫عبد الكعبة‬. Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬changed it to Abdur-Rahman.

Merits of the name:

The most beloved names to Allah are Abdullah, the servant of Allah, and Abdur Rahman, the servant of
the Merciful.

Some scholars have stated that these two names have their own special features, which is that in the
Qur’aan, Allaah does not mention the word ‘abd (or its plural ‘ibaad) in conjunction with any of the
names of Allaah except these two.

And when the slave of Allaah [‘abd Allaah] (Muhammad) stood up invoking Him”

[al-Jinn 72:19]

“And the (faithful) slaves of the Most Gracious [‘ibaad al-Rahmaan] (Allaah)”

[al-Furqaan 25:63]

This is supported by the verse in which Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say (O Muhammad): Invoke Allaah or invoke the Most Gracious [al-Rahmaan] (Allaah)”

[al-Isra’ 17:110]
Accepting Islam:

Accepted very early. Amongst first 8. Accepted through invitation of Abu Bakr R.A.

Merits of Abdur-Rahman bin Auf R.A:

(1)

He was from the Asharah Mubasharah. Highest ranking Sahabah.

Point to note: 5 from these 10 accepted through invitation of Abu Bakr R.A.

(2) He was part of the 6 selected by Umar R.A to choose Khalifa from themselves.

The number of men appointed was six. They were: ‘Ali ibn Abi Talib, ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan, ‘Abdul Rahman
ibn ‘Awf, Sa’d ibn Abi Waqqas, Zubair ibn al ‘Awwam and Talhah ibn ‘Ubaidullah radiya Llahu ‘anhum.
Sa’id ibn Zaid ibn Nufayl was excluded even though he was one of the ten who had been promised
Jannat; perhaps that was because he was from the tribe of Banu ‘Adi (which was ‘Umar’s radiya Llahu
‘anhu own tribe).

He gave them 3 days to decide a Khalifa. He also said if they are split equally then go with the side
Abdur-Rahman bin Auf is with.

(3) He completed the Fajr Salaah when Umar R.A was stabbed.

(4) He has the honour of leading Rasulullah ‫ ﷺ‬in Salaah.

Mughirah bin Shu'bah narrates:

Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam went to relieve himself in the field before Salat al Fajr so I took
along a utensil (filled with water) for him. When Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam returned to me,
I began pouring water from the utensil on his hands. He washed his hands thrice and thereafter washed
his face. Then, he tried to uncover his forearms from the jubbah, but the sleeves of the jubbah were too
tight, so he pulled out his hands and exposed his arms from beneath the jubbah and then washed his
arms up to the elbows. He then washed over his khuffs. Then he came back.

Mughirah continues: I came back with him only to find that the people had put ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf
ahead, who was leading them in salah. Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam made one of the two
rak’at, so he prayed the second rak’at with the people. After ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf made salam,
Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam stood up to complete his salah. This alarmed the Muslims, who
began reciting tasbih in great abundance. After the Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam completed his
salah, he turned to them and said, “You have done well―or he said: you have acted correctly.” He
applauded them for performing salah on time.

Abu Ya’la reports from ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf radiya Llahu ‘anhu in his al Musnad:

When Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam reached ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf, who was leading the
people in salah, the latter intended to move back. The Nabi salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam gestured to him
to remain in his place. Thus he led the salah and Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam followed the
salah of ‘Abdur Rahman.
Wealth of Abdur-Rahman bin Auf R.A: Secrets To His Success:

1) Yaqeen - Trust In Allah:

He came to Madinah empty handed. Many Sahabah had to leave all their wealth when they migrated.
When Islamic Brotherhood was formed, he was paired up with Sa'd bin Rabee', who was the wealthiest
of the Ansar. Sa'd R.A offered 1/2 his wealth and 1 of his wives, but Abdur-Rahman R.A declined and
said:

May Allah bless you in your family and wealth, guide me to the marketplace.

2. Earning The Duas Of Nabi ‫ﷺ‬

A: At the time of his marriage.

Anas bin Malik R.A narrated:

The Messenger of Allah ‫ ﷺ‬saw some traces of saffron on `Abdur-Rahman bin `Awf so he said: 'What is
this?' He said: 'I married a woman for the amount of gold equal to a date stone.' So he said: 'May Allah
bless you. Have a banquet, even if with only one sheep.'"

B. At the occasion of Tabook.

Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬encouraged Sahaabah to spend. Abdur Rahman bin Auf R.A owned 4000 coins. He presents
2000 to Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬explaining that he has kept 2000 for his family. Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬makes dua for him:

May Allah bless you in what you have given and in what you have kept for yourself.

He himself mentions:

The material world opened up for me, until I almost expected to to find gold or silver every time I turned
a stone over.
3. His Business Principles:

Sayyiduna ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf (radiyallahu ‘anhu) was asked, “What is the reason for your wealth?
He replied, ‘Three things:

1) I never refused any profit [no matter how small],

2) I never delayed in supplying an animal when it was sought [as it incurs expenses each day I keep it]

3) I  did not sell on credit.

In today's time the general practice is to take a big loan from the bank and start off with a bang. The
business starts of with a negative balance and it takes very long to break even, let alone make a profit.
Often it doesn't even reach the point of making profit. Person claims insolvency and closes shop. Abdur-
Rahman R.A started small and built himself up.

An example of how he earned:

In one day he sold 1000 camels, making 1 dirham profit on each animal. He also made 1000 dirhams

4. Spending in the Path of Allah

Sayyidina ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf radiya Llahu ‘anhu was an extremely generous and big-hearted
individual. Miserliness and greed never gripped his heart. He would thus spend lavishly without fearing
poverty and give our charity only seeking the countenance of Allah subhanahu wa ta ‘ala. One sample of
his lavish spending is that he freed 30 slaves in one day.

Ma’mar reports from al Zuhri:

During the lifetime of Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf gave half his
wealth, 4000 (silver coins) in charity, followed by 40 000, followed by 40 000 gold coins. He then
mounted 500 warriors on horses in the path of Allah followed by mounting 500 soldiers on camels in the
path of Allah. Majority of his wealth was accrued from business.
Ahmed narrates in his al Musnad from Umm Bakr bint al Musawwir:

‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf sold a land of his to ‘Uthman ibn ‘Affan for 40 000 gold coins which he
distributed among the needy of the Banu Zuhrah, the Muhajirin, and the Ummahat al Mu’minin.

Musawwir relates: I came to Aisha with her share. “Who sent this,” she asked.

“‘Abdur Rahman,” I replied.

She then stated,

“Truly, I heard Rasulullah salla Llahu ‘alayhi wa sallam saying [addressing his wives]:

‘No one will show compassion to you after me except the perseverant.’

May Allah grant ‘Abdur Rahman ibn ‘Awf a drink from the Salsabil of Jannat.”

We can also earn duas by helping people.

Before passing away, he gave away 1/3 of his wealth. Its easy to do this in one's will, but not so easy
whilst living. He gave 50000 dinars in the path of Allah. He also gave 400 dinars to every participant of
Badr who was still alive. They numbered 100 so this amounted to 40000 dinars. When Uthman R.A took
his share from this and was asked about it, he said:

Indeed the wealth of Abdur-Rahman is lawful and pure, and to consume it is well-being (healthy) and full
of blessings.

Value of 40000 dinars. 40,000 Dīnārs is equivalent to 170,000 grams of gold. That amount of gold
today(24th Sep 2021) is approximately R142,332,500.00

Once a great noise, huge commotion was heard in Madinah. Clouds of dust began to rise. Ayesha R.A
enquired as to what was happening. She was told that Abdur Rahman ibn Auf R.A's trade caravan had
come in from Shaam. It consisted of 700 loaded camels. Ayesha R.A said: I heard Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬saying that I
saw Abdur Rahman bin Auf entering Jannah crawling. When this statement reached his ears Abdur
Rahman R.A immediately came to Ayesha R.A and said you have reminded me of a hadith that I have not
forgotten. I am making you witness that I am giving this entire caravan in the path of Allah. I will entire
Jannah running. In one narration it is mentioned that Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬said to him :

Oh Ibn Auf, you are from the wealthy

And you enter Jannah crawling.

So give loans to Allah, He will set your feet free.

We often think that I had that amount I would also give. Abdur-Rahman bin Auf R.A gave and became
rich. He was basically an explanation of the verse of the Qur'an:

‫ت‬

Allah destroys ribn and nourishes charities.

Nabi ‫ ﷺ‬has also mentioned:

Narrated Abu Huraira:

Allah's Messenger (‫ )ﷺ‬said, "If one give in charity what equals one date-fruit from the honestly earned
money and Allah accepts only the honestly earned money --Allah takes it in His right (hand) and then
enlarges its reward for that person (who has given it), as anyone of you brings up his baby horse, so
much so that it becomes as big as a mountain.

His Inheritance:

After giving such huge amounts, he left for his heirs wealth that was too vast to count. He had 4 wives
and each wife received 80000 dinars. This would mean that 320000 dinars was 1/8 of his estate. And
this was cash only. Besides this he left 1000 camels, 100 horses, and  3000 sheep.

The reality was that the wealth of Abdur Rahman ibn Auf R.A was in his hands and not in his heart. That
is why he was able to spend as he did.
