Becauseithasahighmoisturecontentandlow
physicalstructure,itisimportanttomixfreshfood
wastewithabulkingagentthatwillabsorbsomeof
excessmoistureaswellasaddstructuretothe mixture.

makingmanurewasaclaypotwithholes.
3.Compostinginoculums:Compostinginoculums
areconsortiaofmicroflorathatcaneasily
decomposevegetableandfoodwastes.Theyinclude
bacterialandfungalstrains.Talcbasedand
coirpithbasedinoculumsareavailable.The
compostonceproducedcanalsobeusedas
inoculum.Thewastedecomposerdevelopedbythe
NationalCentreofOrganicFarming
(NCOF)isaneffectiveandlessexpensivesourceof

wandletsairandwaterpassthroughitsmanysmall
holes.Ifyouhaveaccesstodryleaves,ithelps.If
youhavepaperorcardboard(notthelaminatedor

itworks.Youcanshredthemintosmallpieces.Use
thekitchenwaste(peelings,andotherwastefromthe
kitchen);Ialsousecookedleftovers(butnotmeat
based,andnotonesthathavealotofbutter/oil/
cheeseinthem).Startwithmakinganinchthick
layerofcompostatthebottomoftheclaypot,adda 1-
2inchlayeroffoodwaste(ithelpsifyoubreakup
thewasteintosmallerpieces)andaddsome
shreddedpaper/cardboard.
Repeattheselayers.Everyfewdays,useastickor
somesimilartoolandturnthemixturetoensurethat
airgetsintothecompostingmixture.Compostusesa
mixtureofnitrogenandcarbon,andyouneedtoget
themixturesomewhatoptimizedandyoucanread
aboutit,butalotofitactuallycomesfrom
experience.Nitrogencomesfromthepulpywaste,
whilethecardboard/paper/dryleavesprovidethe
carbon.Thepreviouscompostprovidesthemicrobes
andinsectsthatjumpstartthecompostingprocess.If
everythinggoesright,withinafewweeksor3-4
months,youwillgetyourwastehavingbeen
convertedintocompost,goldforyourplants.
