With the increasing developments in the field of wireless communication
system, there is ever increasing need of filters.
In the old times and 2G era, when there were few people using phones,
there was no complexity in communication protocols and communication
spectrum was easily utilized.
However, with the age of 3G, 4G and now even with 5G, the communication
protocols have become too much complex and communication has
become limited. Now, as a result, there is interference among signals.
3
Sustainability
RF filters play a key role as it can eliminate interference and noise to meet
the signal to noise ratio.
In addition, as the number of frequency bands that mobile phones need to
support continues to increase since each frequency band needs to have its
filter, the number of filters that need to be used in a mobile phone is also
increasing.
Hence, we can say that filters has a key role in future of wireless
communications.

Resonant Circuits
Resonant circuits are those circuits in which reactive components,
capacitor and inductor are placed together.
Series resonant circuits are those in which components are placed in a
series manner.
Similarly, parallel resonant circuits are those in which components are
placed in a parallel manner.
6
Resonant Circuits In Communications
Resonant circuits are used in many applications of communication like:
1) Filters
2) Oscillators
3) Frequency Selectors etc.
The behaviour of the resonant circuits enables the selection of frequencies
to be passed by the system.

Filters and their types
RF Filters play vital role in RF domain as they only pass required frequencies.
They have wide scope.
There are four basic types of filters
1) Low Pass Filter
2) High Pass Filter
3) Band Pass Filter
4) Band Stop Filter

Filter Transformation
To make any bandpass, bandstop or highpass filter of any order, first, we have to make a
lowpass filter of that order in required topology. Then we will replace the lowpass
components accordingly and then we will calculate the components values of new filter
using the table of ‘g’.
Let’s take an example of 0.5dB equal ripple, 3 order bandpass filter.
1) First we will make 3 order lowpass filter
12
Filter Transformation
1) 2)Then using the o.5dB equal ripple table, we will find the values of inductors and
capacitors.

1) 3) Then using the given formulas we will calculate the values of the new components of our
circuit.

Insertion loss
One of the key factors in selecting a capacitor for Electromagnetic Interfaces (EMI)
is its insertion loss characteristics.
Insertion loss determines the level of attenuation of a filtering circuit.
Its performance is commonly measured in decibels.
Ordinary capacitors have poor insertion loss characteristics because it has
inherently inductor which reduces its performance.
16
Getting to know about Insertion Loss using ADS
After calculations, we have implemented the the circuit design in Advance Design System, and
check its insertion Loss.

RF Switches Initial Overview
A Radio Frequency (RF) switch is a device that routes high-frequency signals through
transmission paths. They also support the integration of multiple radios that use a single
antenna. The need for RF switch circuits is due to the increasing demand for wireless
communications at higher frequencies and wider bandwidths.
There are various types of RF switches: SPDT(single pole double throw)
SP2T (single input, 2 output terminals)
SP4T (single input, 4 output terminals)
SP8T (single input, 8 output terminals)
SP16T (single input, 16 output terminals)
