FOREWORD
Dr. José P. Rizal is a prominent figure in
the nation and its history because he is
the National Hero of the Philippines and
because he fostered and developed
nationalism in the hearts of the Filipino
people.

Because of his martyrdom and love for

his nation, I was inspired to write this
book and make him the subject because
of his works like The Noli Me Tangere and
El Filibusterismo those books can
motivate People to carry the love for the
Philippines.

Another reason for this book is that

Rizal's legacy has to be better understood
by the youth. So help spread the word
about this book, especially among young
people. so that they may understand the
significance of Rizal in our lives.

CHAPTER 1
SAILING
ACROSS THE
WORLD

6
After completing his medical studies
at the University of Santo Tomas,
Rizal journeyed alone to Madrid in
1882 without the knowledge or
consent of his parents, but he was
secretly aided by his brother Paciano.
Rizal studied medicine at
Universidad Central de Madrid when
he first arrived there, in which he
also obtained his medical degree.
1887 Germany The well-known Noli
Mi Tangere, Rizal's first novel, was
published. (Touch Me Not)
The story examines perceived
injustices in the application of the
remedies by the governing elite and
the Spanish friars, who refer to the
Filipinos as "indios," or the "ignorant"
indigenous peoples of the
Philippines.

Once the Novel arrived in the Philippines
the Filipinos read it keenly by no means
the friars got very furious and tried to
stop the sale of the book.

Rizal's associates told him not to travel

back to the Philippines but Rizal said he
needed to help his family. In July of 1887
he bid farewell to Europe and sailed for
Manila.

9
His family was overjoyed to see him again
when the ship landed in Manila. However
due to his medical practices, Rizal chose to
stay in his hometown of Calamba, Laguna.
Rizal objected to the Spanish Friars'
increased wealth as a result of the farmers'
land rent increases. His tenure in the
Philippines was relatively brief—less than
five months—because His protests once
again infuriated the Friars. Rizal's
relatives then persuaded him to set sail for
Europe, which he did.

10
On his way to, as he put it, the land of
liberty, or Europe, he passed through
Hong Kong, Japan, the United States, and
England. He took pleasure in conversing
to his fellow travelers in their native
tongues. His fellow passengers enjoyed
him and him with them by seeing him
perform his Yo-yo tricks, which they had
never seen before. When they finally
arrived, he learned that he had become a
burden to his family since the Friars had
taken possession of his brother's land.
Later, Rizal learned that the Church had
rejected to provide a Roman Catholic
burial for Paciano's brother-in-law. The
trouble made worse by the fact that
Paciano and his other in-laws were exiled
to the southern islands all without their
families. In Calamba, residents were
being forced from their homes while
farms and housings were being
destroyed.

11
But Before hearing the news, Rizal and
his fellow Filipinos published a
newspaper called "La Solidaridad";
among those who collaborated to the
article were Graciano Lopez-Jeana,
Antonio Luna, Ferdinand Blumentritt,
and Rizal personally.

In Paris, France, Rizal and other
Filipino Illustrados (Filipinos who
had studied in European countries)
formed the group "Indios Bravos."
Juan and Antonio Luna, Marcelo H.
Del Pilar, Félix Resurrección Hidalgo,
and Felix Pardo de Tavera were
among the members of this group.

13
Later on, Rizal finished writing El
Filibusterismo (The Reign of Greed), the
sequel to his first novel. He had written a
book in memorial of the three martyred
GomBurZa priests (Fr. Mariano Gomez,
Jose Burgos, and Jacinto Zamora). The
Filipinos felt an even stronger urge to
revolt against the government and the
church's actions, which seemed realistic
at the time. He claims that "Filibustero" is
indeed a dangerous patriot who is about
to be hanged and condemned to death.

14
Later, Rizal wrote in his diary, "The
Philippines is the battleground" (not in
Europe). Thus he left Europe in October
1891. He did, however, they stopped in Hong
Kong so he could get some work and make
some money. His father and brother joined
Rizal in Hong Kong after they managed to
escape. His mother, Doña Teodora, was
initially unable to follow them due to her
detention and the four-day hike she had to
make from Calamba to Santa Cruz, which is
about Ten miles apart. However, out of
sympathy, the governor released her. She
then traveled to Hong Kong with her two
daughters.

When Doña Teodora, Rizal's mother, arrived, he
successfully performed surgery on her left eye to
restore her ability to read and write. Rizal's
expertise as an ocular surgeon was acknowledged in
Hong Kong, where he was known as the Spanish
doctor. One of the happiest Yuletide experiences in
Rizal's life was the Christmas of 1891 in Hong Kong.
Because he had a wonderful family reunion.
Although Rizal
enjoyed Hong Kong,
he was concerned of
his burden upon his
family and asked a
Spanish officer there
whether he might go
back. Rizal desired to
confront any
allegations made
against him. He then
boarded a ship bound
for Manila with his
sister Lucia. After
that, the Spanish
official informed the
governor via cable
that the rat was in the
trap.

CHAPTER 2
THE ROAD TO
MARTYRDOM

17
Rizal set out for the north once his ship landed in
the Philippines, but he had no notion that the
government was following him and getting ready
to set up a trap. Once in Manila, Rizal and his
associates later founded "La Liga Filipina," a
group that was inspired by La Solidaridad and the
Propaganda movement. With equality for
Filipinos and Spaniards in the Philippines, it
sought to unify the entire archipelago into one
equal civilization. Because of this, he has been
placed in exile.

The La Liga Filipina

18
Many Filipinos have heard about Rizal's exile.
Most of them were enraged. One of them was a
poor man named Andrés Bonifacio. He had read
both Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, so he
and his companions started an organization
called the Katipunan. The Katipunan, officially
known as the Kataastaasan, Kagalanggalangang
Katipunan ng mga Anak ng Bayan, was a
Philippine revolutionary society founded by anti-
Spanish colonialist Filipinos in Manila in 1892; its
primary goal was to gain independence from
Spain through a revolution. Fun Fact! You may know
Andres Bonifacio
wearing a white shirt
and a red scarf as shown
below, but this fading
picture of Bonifacio
wearing a suit is the only
living and intact photo
of him!

19
In July 1892, Rizal arrived in Dapitan. It was the most
miserable place he had ever been, but his presence
made the locals happy, for he was their hero. Rizal
utilized his time wisely even while in exile. He
purchased a tiny piece of land along the seaside using
some of the winnings from prior contests and
lotteries. He grew cacao, pineapples, and coconuts
there. He built a home out of the tree trunks he had
acquired through planting. He then gave the town
some money so that it might have Electric Lights and
he had a designed a water Distribution system.
Dapitan had just one school, so he established his
own institution for young men. He taught in athletics
as well as reading and writing.

20
For the importance of
educating geography to
his students, Rizal
collaborated with his
friend and former Latin
teacher, Fr. Francisco
de Paula Sanchez, to
create a large relief
map of Mindanao.
Because Rizal's mind was
constantly engaged, his
hands would usually
seek something to create.
He would sculpt clay
statues and wooden
figurines, Such as this
sculpture of St Paul the
Hermit
Rizal made three new
animal discoveries
while he was living in
exile: a lizard, a frog,
and a beetle. Later,
scientists gave these
creatures the name
"Rizali" in his honor.

21
Former Jesuit instructors of Rizal
attempted but failed to convert him to
Christianity. Although Rizal had a strong
religious faith, he did not support the way
the friars treated people or the way they
practiced or respected their religion.
One day, a man from Hong Kong arrived
and need urgent eye treatment. He was
accompanied by Josephine Bracken, his
stepdaughter and Rizal's future spouse.
Josephine sent her father back home
when the treatment was finished while
she was staying remaining in Dapitan. As
a result, Rizal and Bracken started a
relationship. The only institution that
could authorize the two lovers' marriage
at the time was the church. Rizal asked
the Bishop of Cebu directly, but the
response was no since Rizal refused to
revert back to the church. Rizal and
Bracken decided to stay in a relationship
as husband and wife, nonetheless.

22

23
A doctor by the name of Pio Valenzuela
visited Rizal in July of 1896. He had a
message from Andres Bonifacio, the
Katipunan's leader. He said that the
Katipunan planned to start a revolt against
Spain in secret. Rizal was advised by
Valenzuela to escape Dapitan.
Rizal remarked
that the revolt
would lack
resources,
including money
and weapons.
Little did he know
that he may be
proposed as the
honorary head and
president of the
organization.
Rizal had a perfect way to escape, but he swore
not to. As a result, Rizal requested permission
to travel to Cuba as a doctor in a letter to the
Governor-general Ramon Blanco, six months
after his Pio Valenzuela's visit.

24
The message was delivered to
Governor General Blanco, who did not
reply, But he still wanted to set sail for
Manila. So, the locals wanted to say
farewell to Rizal on his departure day
because of fear that he would be
executed. By the end of July, he set sail.
He waited for a month in Manila Bay.
The Katipunan uprising was
scheduled to occur on August 30, but
the date was leaked. Numerous rebels
were imprisoned. The rebellion had to
be launched days earlier by Bonifacio
and his remaining men. Afterwards
Governor General Blanco approved
Rizal's departure to Cuba by
September. However after reaching in
Barcelona, he was detained and
brought back to Fort Santiago in
Manila's walled city of Intramuros.

25
CHAPTER 3
THE ULTIMATE
JUDGEMENT

26
After arriving back in Manila, Rizal was
detained in Fort Santiago Intramuros.
He was asked several questions about
Katipunan and Bonifacio, but he always
replied that he had never been a
member of the group or met Bonifacio.
Clearly, they did not take him seriously.
His writings Noli Me Tángere and El
Filibusterismo were also mentioned by
the Spaniards. The La Liga Filipina, a
clandestine organization he created,
was another factor the Spanish blamed
since they thought it was the same as
the Katipunan since both groups had
the same ideologies and objectives.
Unfortunately, on December 28 1896,
Rizal was declared guilty of sparking
the revolution. At Bagumbayan (now
Luneta Park), he was scheduled for a
firing squad execution at 7 a.m.

Despite his
pleas to the
contrary, he
was found
guilty on all
three counts of
rebellion,
sedition, and
conspiracy and
given the death
penalty.

28
Rizal composed his final poem, which included
14 stanzas, the day before his death. He
penned it on a tiny piece of paper in his small
and fluid handwriting. Inside his alcohol stove
is where he later kept it hidden. Then, the
poem's title was named to Mi Ultimo Adios (My
Last Farewell). (See full translation in Page 29)
Rizal's mother then paid her son one final visit
after. She was accompanied by her daughters
and grandchildren, but Rizal was unable to
embrace her sobbing mother, Instead, he
kissed her hand. He gave his sister Narcisa
with his chair, his niece with a handkerchief,
and his nephew with a belt and chain. Through
these final goodbyes, his sister Trinidad was
sent an alcohol burner that included a small
piece of paper wich included the small piece of
paper which inscripted his poem
The teary Josephine Bracken was his last
visitor. Imitacion De Cristo (The Imitation of
Christ), by Thomas A. Kempis, was given to her
along with a note from Jose Rizal that said, "To
my dear and unhappy wife, Josephine,
December 30th, 1896."

MI ULTIMO

Ultimo Adios.
Adiós, Patria adorada, región del sol querida, Perla
del mar de oriente, nuestro perdido Edén! A darte
laurel o lirio, Cadalso o campo abierto, combate o
sencilla, humilde flor, Acércala a tus labios y besa

nuestras pobres madres que gimen su amargura;
canto a ti.

The English Translation Rizal's "My last Farewell" (Mi
Ulitmo Adios) -Encarnacion Alzona & Isidro Escare Abeto
Farewell, my adored Land, region of the sun caressed,
Pearl of the Orient Sea, our Eden lost, With gladness I
give you my life, sad and repressed; And were it more
brilliant, more fresh and at its best, I would still give it
to you for your welfare at most. On the fields of battle,
in the fury of fight, Others give you their lives without
pain or hesitancy, The place does not matter: cypress,
laurel, lily white; Scaffold, open field, conflict or
martyrdom's site, It is the same if asked by the home
and country. I die as I see tints on the sky b'gin to show
And at last announce the day, after a gloomy night;
If you need a hue to dye your matutinal glow,
Pour my blood and at the right moment spread it so,
And gild it with a reflection of your nascent light My
dreams, when scarcely a lad adolescent, My dreams
when already a youth, full of vigor to attain, Were to see
you, Gem of the Sea of the Orient,
Your dark eyes dry, smooth brow held to a high plane,
Without frown, without wrinkles and of shame without
stain. My life's fancy, my ardent, passionate desire, Hail!
Cries out the soul to you, that will soon part from thee;
Hail! How sweet 'tis to fall that fullness you may
acquire; To die to give you life, 'neath your skies to
expire, And in thy mystic land to sleep through eternity!
If over my tomb some day, you would see blow, A
simple humble flow'r amidst thick grasses, Bring it up to
your lips and kiss my soul so, And under the cold tomb, I
may feel on my brow,
Warmth of your breath, a whiff of thy tenderness.

Let the moon with soft, gentle light me descry, Let the
dawn send forth its fleeting, brilliant light, In murmurs
grave allow the wind to sigh, And should a bird
descend on my cross and alight, Let the bird intone a
song of peace o'er my site. Let the burning sun the
raindrops vaporize And with my clamor behind return
pure to the sky; Let a friend shed tears over my early
demise; And on quiet afternoons when one prays for
me on high, Pray too, oh, my Motherland, that in God
may rest I. Pray thee for all the hapless who have died,
For all those who unequalled torments have
undergone; For our poor mothers who in bitterness
have cried; For orphans, widows and captives to
tortures were shied, And pray too that you may see
your own redemption. And when the dark night wraps
the cemet'ry And only the dead to vigil there are left
alone, Don't disturb their repose, disturb not the
mystery: If thou hear the sounds of cithern or psaltery,
It is I, dear Country, who, a song t'you intone. And
when my grave by all is no more remembered, With
neither cross nor stone to mark its place, Let it be
plowed by man, with spade let it be scattered And my
ashes ere to nothingness are restored, Let them turn to
dust to cover thy earthly space. Then it doesn't matter
that you should forget me: Your atmosphere, your
skies, your vales I'll sweep; Vibrant and clear note to
your ears I shall be: Aroma, light, hues, murmur, song,
moaning's deep, Constantly repeating the essence of
the faith I keep.

My idolized Country, for whom I most

Dear Philippines, to my last goodbye, oh,

There I leave all: my parents, loves of mine,
I'll go where there are no slaves, tyrants or

where God alone does reign.
Farewell, parents,

CHAPTER 5
CONSUMMATUM
EST!

42
On the morning of Rizal's execution,
he started his march from
Intramuros towards Bagumbayan at
precisely 6:30 AM. He wore a bowler
hat and a simple black suit. Then a
rope was used to bind him. Two
Jesuit priests stood next to him to
accompany him. The day, according
to Rizal, was perfect for his final day.
He passed past Ateneo University,
one of his alma mater, just after
passing Intramuros. He claimed, "I
spent some of my life there." Most of
them people felt sorry for him when
they got to Bagumbayan, and some
of them wanted him killed. These
people had seen Rizal as being
fearless, almost as if he had spent a
significant amount of time
preparing. His heart rate was
normal when his doctor tested it, not
like the heartbeat of a person who is
going to be killed. Rizal's Statue in

43
Rizal desired to stand strong before the firing
squad, for he wanted to face them. However, the
Filipino soldiers who were about to kill him
were given the order to shoot him in the back
instead. Rizal complied. The firing squad
consisted of eight native soldiers. Eight Spanish
soldiers were waiting behind them with guns,
prepared to shoot the native soldiers if they
refused to shoot Rizal. For the last time, Rizal
reaffirmed his innocence as a Filipino and his
non-traitor status to his nation.

Consummatum Est! at precisely seven in the

morning. Rizal cried. The command was given.
Rizal's vertebra was struck by a bullet that was
fired into the air. He landed on his Backside Facing
the Philippine sun.

44
After his passing, the Philippine
Revolution persisted until 1898On June
12, 1898 Then the Philippines proclaimed
their independence from Spain with the
help of the United States.
At this time, -eventually

sister of Rizal, buried for
- a long time. She instructed the guards to erect
a marble plaque bearing Rizal's initials, "RPJ,"
reversed. The remains of Rizal were
exhumed a few days after the Americans
gained control of the city. They were taken to
Narcisa's home, cleaned up, and then put in
an ivory urn. Until 1912, his remains were
interred there.

45
The urn of Rizal was moved from
Binondo to the Marble Hall of the
Ayuntamiento at Intramuros,
where it was kept on public
display and guarded by the
Caballeros de Rizal, or Knights of
Rizal. The urn was made available
to the public for one final time.
The urn started its last journey
from the Ayuntamiento to its final
resting place at a location in
Bagumbayan (now Luneta),
where the Rizal Monument would
be constructed the following day
in a solemn procession. Rizal was
finally buried with appropriate
ceremonies in the presence of his
family.

CHAPTER 6
HIS SIGNIFICANCE
AND LEGACY

Despite having a significant impact on

Filipino culture, Dr. José Rizal's legacy is all
but forgotten by Filipinos today,
particularly the youth. What therefore
remains of Jose Rizal for us? Why should
we acknowledge it, and how can we
educate our fellow Filipinos about it?
48
Today, Rizal is seen as one of the prominent
figures in the fight for Philippine independence
as the cherished national hero of the Philippines.
Students must recite his works from memory
and act out his life. However h is works are
recognized not just in the Philippines but all
throughout the world. In Europe, his novels
were revered and well known for his writings
because he first created and finished those two
novels. At his time, he was celebrated by his
fellow Filipinos for his intelligence and
patriotism. In Hong Kong, they called him the
Spanish doctor, and Rizal treated many patients,
but his most notable patient was his own
mother. In the Philippines, December 30 is
recognized as Rizal Day and is a day to honor
and recognize his significance.

49
The first president of the Philippines, Emilio
Aguinaldo, commemorated the first Rizal
Day in 1898 as a day of national mourning
for Rizal and all those who perished under
Spanish colonial rule. William Howard Taft,
the Governor-General during the American
occupation, hailed Rizal as a national hero of
the Philippines. Following that, the
Philippine Commission adopted a resolution
designating December 30 as Rizal Day. Years
later, President Elpidio Quirino ratified a
Republic Act to ensure the solemnity of the
event. Then the Rizal Law, was signed it is a
decree that mandates all educational
institutions in the Philippines to offer
courses about José Rizal. Both cockfighting
and horse racing are forbidden.
Furthermore, all national flags must be
flown at half-staff on December 30th every
year. To commemorate the 100th
anniversary of Rizal's passing, a
reenactment of his execution and a flag-
raising ceremony were held.

Joseph Estrada, Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo, Benigno Aquino III And
Rodrigo Duterte celebrating and paying homage to Rizal on Rizal Day.

51
The Filipino people will always
revere José Rizal for his
intellect, courage, nationalism,
devotion, and compassion for
his fellow Filipinos and his
motherland. As Rizal himself
said, "The youth is the hope of
our future." We must instill in
our youth—our hope—the
sense of patriotism that Rizal
bequeathed to his nation, and
we must carry that sense of
patriotism proudly and
confidently. We must all
remember what a famous
Poster Said- "Rizal Died For
You, Be Worthy Of Him".

About the author
Tyrone Tandog was just an
adolescent when he first wrote
this eBook. He created The
Publisher History Stack in 2022
and it was one of his summer
activities. But The thought of
making eBooks started early
2020 with the name of A

Biography which then focused

on the biographies of famous
people.
Now History Stack focuses on
important events and people in
international history.
