PRINCIPLES OF PRESTRESSED AND PRECAST CONCRETE DESIGN (CES 525)

MINI PROJECT
Semester: MARCH - AUGUST 2022

Introduction
This Mini Project assessment is designed as a replacement to the final examination for this subject
as well as to assess the complex problem-solving skills. It will contribute 20% out of 60% from the
total percentage of final examination. Plagiarism checking via Ouriginal shall be 20% or less for
Part 2, or else the assessment will be penalized for grading.

This assessment will be carried out in a group of not more than 5 students and must be submitted
through Microsoft Team. All discussion session (Minimum 2 times of online or face to face meeting)
in completing this assessment must be documented in the Mini Project report as well.

Learning Outcome (Knowledge Profile (WK): Complex Engineering Problem Attributes (WP))
Referring to Table 1, at the end of this assessment students should be able to:
1. Propose suitable prestressed concrete beam design to solve the conflicting issue raised.
(CO2:PO3) (WK5:WP1,WP2,WP3)
2. Propose an appropriate precast concrete system and evaluate the potential solution to
overcome the issues encountered.

QUESTION 1
Your team is assigned to design a 25 m span simply supported post-tensioned prestressed concrete
beam for a new bridge construction. At service, the beam is expected to sustain a characteristic
external permanent action of 15 kN/m excluding its self-weight. The beam also has to sustain
20 kN/m of variable action. This bridge structure will be constructed in oceanic area with direct
exposure to the sea wind resulting the structure having risk of airborne chlorides.

The long-term prestressed losses are estimated to be 25%. The cross-section of the beam is given
in Figure 1. State all assumptions made in your analysis and design.

a) Calculate the percentage of short term losses due to friction and elastic shortening for the beam.
Make all necessary assumptions. This value is to be considered in the design of the prestressed
concrete beam in Q1(b). (4 marks)(C4)(CO2:PO3) (WK5:WP1)

b) Carry out all design procedures required under serviceability limit state for the designated
prestressed concrete beam for each group. Propose the appropriate type, size, number and the
location of the prestressing tendon (wire/strand/tendon). Changes may be made to the
dimension if the section given is not suitable, however, the same beam shape must be remained.
Include all design check required for serviceability limit state.
(10 marks)(C4) (CO2:PO3) (WK5:WP1,WP2, WP3)

c) For the beam section designed in (b), check the capacity of the beam under the ultimate limit
state condition. Propose any additional reinforcements (flexural or shear reinforcements) if
required.
(8 marks) (C4) (CO2:PO3) (WK5:WP1,WP2,WP3)

d) If your client requests to increase the span length of the bridge by 5 meters, prepare an
alternative proposal to the beam design to maintain the structural integrity of the structure.

CES 525 PRINCIPLES OF PRESTRESSED AND PRECAST CONCRETE DESIGN

QUESTION 2
This question is designed for students to understand the application of precast concrete structures
in the Malaysian construction industry.

a) Each group is required to prepare a proposal for a medium rise building (five to ten storey high)
with the application of the Industrialized Building System (IBS) available in our country. This
building is to be built in the rural area of Pahang. You may choose any type of building that is
suitable for this location.

Your proposal shall consist of:

i) The proposed type of medium rise building (include a 3D picture of your selection)
ii) Type of precast frame system
iii) Type of flooring system
iv) Type of connections between structures (i.e. beam-slab; beam-column, wall-slab, slab-slab
etc; any connections related to the chosen precast system)
v) Suitable type of foundation

For each proposed system Q2(a-(i)) – Q2(a-(v)), outline the appropriateness of each chosen
system. Supported pictures and details are required.
(10 marks) (C4) (CO3:PO2)(WK4,WK6:WP1,WP2)

b) For the building system proposed in a rural area, discuss in detail two possible complications
that could arise in the construction process of the prefabricated IBS system (before, during or
after construction) and propose relevant solution to each problem. Related pictures and details
are required to support your answers.
(4 marks) (C5) (CO3:PO2)(WK4,WK6:WP1,WP2)

Your Mini Project Report shall include:

1) Complete answer to the given questions together with the front page and rubrics for
assessment.
2) Proof of group meeting carried out (a minimum of two meetings is required – face to
face or online meeting)
3) Plagiarism report via Ouriginal (limited to 20%) for Question 2.
4) References (book, articles, research papers etc.)
