EVALUATING

BY PRINCESS TESADO
Crash course is an educational YouTube channel pinoneered by
the Green brothers, John and Hank Green, who also started Vlogbrothers.
Crash Course was some of the hundred initial channels funded by
YouTube's $100 million original channel initiative. This channel
produces high quality educational videos for free on the platform itself
and has produced more than 32 courses on a wide variety of subjects,
including organic chemistry, literature, world history, biology,
philosophy, theater, ecology, and many more. They also have younger
sister channel, Crash Course Kids, specially dedicated to teaching the
younger audience.
RELEVANCE
The information that this channel presents and gives to its viewers is
relevant to any particular topic that they are interested in learning, not
just in science and history. From the name itself, crash courses are squeezed
information while still remaining significant and related to a particular
topic. Whether it is about literature, film, theater, business, and games,
Crash Course continues to provide relevant details on these fields even if
they are a channel that was born in the early 2006s. Education is for
everyone, and crash course is an educational tool that can come in handy.
Therefore, Crash Course's videos are important and are always up-to-date. For
example, discrimination has always been an issue over the past centuries and
Crash Course has provided a specific video for that. Moreover, numerous
individuals are still uneducated today on the topics of gender and sexuality,
but thankfully, CC has also given us a video for that.
ACCURACY
Accuracy is an issue because of the effort to simplify content. Some
videos from the Crash Course Kids miss the mark and can most likely
give misunderstanding and misinformation. Due to the fast-paced
learning, it can be difficult to determine the accuracy of the
tiniest details if you are not attentive enough. It is vital for the
channel to hand out accurate information since it has a global
audience who seek out online educational content. It cannot be
denied, however, that the writers and the people behind this channel
are educated enough, evidenced by the notable achievements and
background of the famous American author, John Green, and MS degree
holder, Hank Green.
BIAS/PERSPECTIVE
There are some particular videos that had incredible historical bias. The
first few episodes of their History playlist clearly appears to elicit hate
towards the misconceptions and love for Western culture. This seems to be
understandable since Western culture is kind of placed in a unnecessarily
high regard. However, from an Indian history episode, the narrator himself
seemed to spit out all his opinions about European cultures, whether they
deserve it or not, and completely leaves out all the ills of Indian society.
Some say that this is because most of his audience have at least some passive
knowledge on Western world history, so, he spends time breaking down the
"common knowledge." On the other hand, most Westerners know very little about
Asia and its history, so Green has to spend more time on the uncontroversial
basics and has no time left over to discuss misconceptions or popular myths.
RELIABILITY
The channel has a massive following of 13.1 million subscribers as of
this writing and we can say that they are reliable enough because of
the educational background of the people behind these videos. Hank
Green himself holds a BS in Biochemistry from Eckerd College and a MS
in Environmental Studies from University of Montana. His brother,
John Green, is an Indian Springs School graduate and a BA holder from
Kenyon College where he double-majored in English and Religious
Studies. Moreover, their team recently teamed up with Arizona State
University, one of the best colleges in the world as of 2022, ranking
#117.
Crash course has been of a great use to me as a student who
does not know everything about anything. What's good about them is they
highlight important details but also include often missed off points.
Our teachers also have been using this since elementary and even until
high school to get the class to focus on a lesson and really soak in
information which isn't so hard at all because of the puns and fun
animations that keep our eyes glued to the screen. Whenever I need help
in my science lessons, CC has been my go-to-channel overnight when I
have a summative for the next day. Most importantly, history classes
have never been better because of CC's quick but credible videos.
MY PERSONAL EMOJI
Anyone can agree that everyday is not the best day, especially
when you are living in a pandemic. Recently, I've been
experiencing anxiety and lack of sleep because I am now in a point
where transitioning to another chapter of my life is getting
nearer and nearer. As you can see, my eyebags have worsen and are
becoming more visible, as well as my wrinkles. The straight lined
mouth is my neutral mood because I expect things to not always be
good, so that in the end, I am not disappointed. Lately, I also do
not really care much of my appearance, hence the "kalkag" hair. I
do not always comb my hair compared to before. Maybe it's because
I do not get to meet my friends that much anymore, or people in
general. Overall, I can say that this isn't the usual me.
