2. HUWA-SAN
Mode of action

An excess of hydrogen peroxide

molecules are stabilised around
silver ions bringing more H₂O₂
molecules in a controlled way to
the active site (2).

Hydroxyl radicals formed

penetrate the cell membrane (3)
and kill the micro-organisms.

The excess of hydrogen peroxide

is recombined around the silver
to repeat the process (4)
Properties

❖ User friendly

Little or no re-use of irrigation water of trayfields

Large losses of water + Loss of nutrients and PPPs
→ Closing the waterflow = NECESSARY

Pathogen-free, young plant material(Phytophthora spp. , Pythium spp.)
→ Disinfection of drainwater = ESSENTIAL
THE CHALLENGE

Current situation: no re-use of irrigation water, loss of nutrients and PPPs

THE CHALLENGE

Future: collection of first 100 m³/ha = priority

OUR SOLUTION

• Mini-tray field = worst case scenario: 100% re-use

• Pre-filtration:
1. Vibrating screen: 70 µM
2. Cloth filter: 5 µM

• Disinfection: Huwa-San TR-50 injection with

DISINFECTION OF IRRIGATION WATER

TO HELP CLIENT WITH CLOGGING PROBLEMS

Client Challenge Our solution Business impact

MEYERS SOFTFRUIT

Riemst, Belgium

Strawberry: 2.2 ha glass – 6400 m² closed tunnels – 1 ha tray field

Family company
THE CHALLENGE

Pipes clog due to growing biofilm:

- Drippers give uneven waterings or no water at all → Buckets with plant dry
- Plants losses due to water shortage → Loss of production
- Only slow sand filter between the dirty and clean drain → proved to be
insufficient in preventing biofilm formation

→ Disinfection of irrigation water = NECESARRY

OUR SOLUTION

Step 1:

During crop rotation: flush pipes with 0.5% Huwa-San TR-50

→ Dissolves the formed biofilm without risks for the plants

Customer testimony

“Just rinsing with water always produced dirt, but much less. Huwa-San loosens
the biofilm and clearly really cleans the pipes. We had to backwash the filter
several times because so much debris was coming out of the pipes.”
OUR SOLUTION

Step 2:

Client installed a dosing system for Huwa-San TR-50:

- Iwaki pulse pump w/ manual venting
- Injection in the pressure pipe towards the greenhouse

During cultivation:
- keep pipes clean by dosing Huwa-San TR-50 with every watering
Winter: +/- 40 ml/m³ Huwa-San TR-50 (= 20 ppm H2O2)
Summer: +/- 20 ml/m³ Huwa-San TR-50 (= 10 ppm H2O2)
→ These are concentrations specific for this customer!
Every company is different and a tailor-made dosing advice is necessary

- at start: frequent flushing of the pipes

OUR SOLUTION

Step 3:

Several times a year, company visits are planned in consultation with the grower:
- Watersamples are taken + analysed by an independant laboratory
- Concentration Huwa-San TR-50 is measured with a handheld spectrophotometer
- All data is combined in a report + advice is given

The client is able to measure the

concentration Huwa-San TR-50 using
peroxide test strips
= continuous monitoring
ROAM TECHNOLOGY AS HYGIENE PARTNER

BEL’ORTA

Multiple locations in Belgium

Belgian cooperation of over 1.450 fruit and vegetable growers

(Fruit processing, storage and packaging)

370 employees; revenu of 370 million euros/ year

THE CHALLENGE

Cherries are often cooled after harvesting to remove field heat:

- Prevent physiological changes (softening)
- Prevent water loss (wilting and shriveling)
- Reduce production of ethylene (softening and ripening)

Often a hydrocooler is used with cold water

Not without a challenge:

- The water used can become contaminated:
Crosscontamination
Pathogens can infect the fruits
Decay of the fruits
Reduced shelf life

→ Disinfection of cooling water = NECESSARY

THE CHALLENGE

During the cultivation season: bacterial, fungal or viral pathogens have the
possibility to occur and infect:

- Eradication during the season = difficult (sensitivity of the plants to

certain products)

- During crop rotations: ideal moment to do a thorough clean-up and

disinfection as the plants are removed

Think about ToBRFV

CROP ROTATION PROTOCOL

• For surface disinfection:

- Plants and plant residues are removed

- Lose materials are removed

- With a blower all gutters and plastic foil on the ground are
cleaned + all debris is removed

- Glass is washed on the inside with product X

- Gutters are cleaned with water under high pressure using

a spray cart

- Gutters are sprayed again with Huwa-San TR-50: 3%

- Fog with product Y

• Before and after disinfection: sampling

- RODAC (Replicate Organism Detection and Counting) plates:
germ count + yeast and fungi

- Several places and surfaces in the greenhouse
