Is a Cactus and Succulent the Same Thing?

People often get confused about the difference between a cactus and a succulent. Actually, cacti and
succulents come from the same basic genus of plants. Succulents are any plant that stores water in
its stems, roots, and leaves, and cacti do just that. This actually makes the cactus a form of succulent.
As a sub-family within the group known as “succulents”, all cacti are succulents, but not all succulents
are cacti. There are around 60 different families of plants under the heading succulent, which include
aloe vera, haworthia, sedum, sempervivum, and cacti.

The main difference is the areole of the cactus that differentiates it from other succulents. This is the
bud on the bocy of the cactus from which the spikes grow. So while there are spiky succulents, such
as aloe vera, if they do not have the areole bud for the spines, they are not actually cacti.
