Learning Competency (Essential Competency)

● Describe the different levels of biological organization from
cell to biosphere. (S7LT- IIc3)

Objectives
At the end of this module, the learners should be able to:
1. Trace the levels of biological organization from cell to biosphere
using illustrations or diagrams.
2. Identify the biological organization from cell to biosphere using
illustrations/diagrams and complete the biological organization
using paragraph completion worksheets.
3. Summarize the biological organization from cell to biosphere in
written form
4. Identify ways of taking care of the levels of biological organization
from cell to biosphere.

Let’s Recall

Directions: Arrange the steps in focusing the microscope. Write the arranged
letters starting from number 1 as the first step up to number 5 as the last step.
A. Move the slide until it is focused on the center.
B. Rotate the revolving nosepiece to the lowest magnification power
objective lens.
C. Adjust the mirror, illuminator, and or diaphragm for maximum light exposure.
D. Adjust the coarse and fine adjustment knobs until the image is focused.
E. Mount the specimen into the stage using metal clips.

Let’s Understand

Life is complex yet it is organized. The structures of living things on earth are properly

arranged from smallest to largest levels, called the levels of biological organization.

Biological organization is based on a hierarchy of structural levels where each level has

distinct properties. The levels of biological organization are divided into two major

divisions, these are the smaller and larger levels. The smaller levels are composed of the

cell, tissue, organ, organ system, and organism. While the larger levels are population,

community, ecosystem, and biosphere.

Smaller Levels of Biological Organization

1. Cell - The basic and smallest unit of life. Example: Animal cell, plant cell
2. Tissue - A group of cells that perform a similar function. Example: Smooth
muscle tissue, vascular tissue
3. Organ - A group of tissues in all living things that performs specific function. Example:
Stomach, leaf
4. Organ system - A multiple of organs that are connected to perform
specific functions. Example: Digestive System, shoot system
5. Organism - An individual regardless of its size and complexity. Example: Human,
Tomato plant (or any living thing)

Larger Levels of Biological Organization

1. Population - A group of similar organisms living together in the same area.

Example:
all the frogs
2. Community - All the living things that live in the same area. Example: All
the frogs and other animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria.
3. Ecosystem - A community of organisms including the living and nonliving things
that can be found in the area. Example: farm, forest, mangrove swamp, ocean,
etc.
4. Biosphere - The layer of the earth where life in all these levels exist. It includes
the lithosphere, atmosphere, and hydrosphere. Example: Earth’s Biosphere

Ways of Taking Care of the Levels of Biological Organization

Studying the levels of biological organization is important to understand the structures

and functions of the living and nonliving things. Anything that happens at the lower levels
has a great impact in succeeding larger levels and vice versa. Thus, taking care of them
is necessary.
Practicing proper hygiene, having a healthy diet, regular exercise, and avoiding vices
such as smoking and illegal drugs would keep the cell healthy making the organism in
good shape and free from any disease. On the other hand, protecting the earth is
essential for the existence of all organisms. You can participate in this by reducing
pollution through saving water, saving electricity, using reusable or eco-bags, avoiding
single use or disposable plastics, planting more trees and plants, and many others.

Let’s Evaluate
A. Identify the level of biological organization of the following.

1. A leaf
2. A planet Earth
3. A mangrove tree
4. All the mangrove trees in coastal area
5. Mangrove swamp

B. Write the letter of the best answer on your answer sheet.

1. What are the smallest and the largest levels of biological organization?
I. Cell II. Tissue III. Ecosystem IV. Biosphere

A. I and III B. II and IV C. I and IV D. II and III

2. Which of the following has the CORRECT arrangement of levels of

biological organization from largest to smallest?
A. biosphere, ecosystem, community, population, organism, organ system,
organ, tissue, cell
B. biosphere, community, ecosystem, population, organism, organ, organ
system, tissue, cell

D. biosphere, population, ecosystem, community, organism, organ system,
organ, tissue, cell

3. How is an ecosystem different from a community?

I. Community is larger than ecosystem

II. Community is smaller than the ecosystem.
III. Community is composed of living and nonliving things while the
ecosystem is composed of living things only.
IV. Community needs groups of different living things while ecosystem needs
living things and nonliving things to exist.
A. II B. II and IV C. III and IV D. I and IV

4. Palawan has a mangrove forest, an example of tropical rainforest in the Philippines.

How do you describe this ecosystem? The area is composed of

A. mangrove trees only

B. mangrove trees, other animals living in it

D. mangrove trees, all the animals that live in it, water, soil, and sunlight.

5. The Las Piñas-Parañaque Critical Habitat and Ecotourism Area (LPPCHEA) or Las
Piñas Parañaque Wetland Park is the first critical habitat in the Philippines located in
the Southwest part of Manila Bay. This serves as a sanctuary for the local and
migratory birds from Siberia. People from Metro Manila visit the area for bird
watching activity. Protecting and conserving this park would lead to the increase in
the population of bird species. What is the most practical way to take part in the
protection and conservation of this ecosystem level of biological organization?

A. Grow more plants at home.

B. Reduce the use of plastics.
C. Conserve water and electricity.
D. Participate in a clean and drive program for LPPCHEA.
