Abstract Reasoning — Test 1

The aptitudes awd abilities m•asvred by verbat and numeric reasoning tests can easily be
related to real world tasks and jobs, as many jobs require some degree of skill svith words
and numbers. Abstract reasoning tests of the other hand, seem to consist of questions which
bave little or no application in the real world. Yet these types of question appear in most
g'radaate and management aptitude tests. Why is ihis?

Abstract reasoning tests date back to the research done by the psychologist Charles
Shearman in the 1920’s. Shearman used a staiisiisal technique celled factor analysis to
examine relationships between people's scores on different types of intelligence tests

be concluded that people who do well on some intelligence tests also do well on others

As a rssuTt of this wsearch Spearman developed a to-factor theory of intelligence.

q - General Ability
s - Specific Abilities

As the diagram shows, 5pnarmañ said that intelligence is maiaiy made up of ‘g’,
›<th bright ople having a lot, and dull people having less. Speannao defined ‘g’
as:

“the innate abiTiry to perceive relationships and educe co-relattortskps”

|f \ve repTacc the v ord ‘cduce’ with ‘work ou\’ then you can see why abstract reasonlg
questions are seen IO he 4 good measure of Moral intelli$encs, as tics test you ab\lizy to
rcci e rcl8tion5hip end then to work ont any to-reTatiunships without you requiring any
