The Teardrop
Star: Gamma Geminoriumi (Al Hena) Deity: Rudra (“The Howler”)

Myth 1

As you can recall the in the previous nakṣatra, Brahma, the Creator, was so mesmerized with
his creation (his daughter Saraswati) that he developed 5 heads to look at the 4 cardinal
directions as well as a 5th head to be able to look up. Sarasvati was extremely displeased with
this pursuit that she ran away and Brahma turned into a male deer to look for her.

The other gods were appalled at Brahma’s behavior and thought of a way to stop him from
committing this unmoral deed, but they were not powerful enough to stop him, since
Brahma was the creator. So they took the most ferocious parts of each other and made the
fiercest of the gods named Rudra. Rudra is actually
another form of Lord Śiva (the angry form of Lord Śiva
who destroys everything that is evil and bad. Rudra
slashed off one of Brahma’s five heads, thus preventing a
mortal creature from being born of pure God energy.
First you need to destroy what is not working and then
you get to start something new. First there is sorrow (the
tears from crying), and then there is rejuvenation. Note
that this nakṣatra is the first one to introduce the element
of water (Aśvinī through Mṛgaśirṣa were “Earth”).

Myth 2

Brahma’s first children (who were created in his mind)

were the 4 Kumaras named Sanandana (ever Joyful), Sanaka (Ancient), Sanatana (Eternal),
and Sanatkumara (ever Young). Brahma ordered them to aid in creation, but as
manifestations of ‘purity’, and uninterested in worldly life, they refused and instead devoted
themselves to God and celibacy, against the wishes of their father. Brahma was angry at his
children for not granting his wishes and this anger escaped from his eyebrows and took the
form of Rudra. The word Rudra means ‘the one who cries’. Rudra took the form of Ardha-
Naraeshwara, half woman and half man, which then gave birth to 11 Rudras & 11 Rudranis.
